CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) describes his morning routine of vanity.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Bret Easton Ellis's dark and violent satire of America in the 1980s is brought to the screen in this unsettling drama with blackly comic overtones. Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale), the son of a wealthy Wall Street financier, is pursuing his own lucrative career with his father's firm. Bateman is the prototypical yuppie, obsessed with success, fashion, and style. He is also a serial killer who murders, rapes, and mutilates both strangers and acquaintances without provocation or reason. Donald Kimble (Willem Dafoe), a police detective, questions Bateman about the disappearance of Paul Allen (Jared Leto), whom Patrick murdered several days earlier. As Kimble stays on Bateman's trail, Bateman's mask of studied, distant cool begins to fall apart. American Psycho also features Reese Witherspoon as Bateman's girlfriend, as well as Samantha Mathis, Chloe Sevigny, and Guinevere Turner; the latter also co-authored the screenplay. Controversy followed the production from the start, when speculation that Leonardo Di Caprio would play Bateman sparked concerns that he would lure preteens to an R-rated movie. Di Caprio soon bowed out of the project, and original leading man Bale was reinstated. Later, a group of Toronto residents attempted to block filming in that city after Canadian serial killer Paul Bernardo claimed that Ellis's novel inspired his murder spree.

Idk why but I love the little detail of him saying "I can do a thousand now" when talking about his stomach crunches. He isn't saying that he does a thousand every day, but that he has the capability of doing it. That sort of little narcissistic comment just adds onto the character even more.

@@every_username_is_taken I actually like those contrasting bits from the book. Book Patrick thinks about murder in the same vapid and extremely specific detail as he does Joe Cocker's career, or his own morning and workout routine. While you read about the morning routine, you are understandably bored, when you read about the murder, you are understandably horrified. To Patrick, it's all the same, but to us non-insane readers, it's a wild shift that seems to come from nowhere. I actually think the boring parts elevate the horrifying parts even though they are written almost exactly the same way.

I noticed this small detail: while Patrick is peeling off the face mask, the music switches from a peaceful, classical piece to a mysterious and spooky screeching violin sound. This demonstrates that he has a layer he uses to make him seem like an innocent man, but once he takes that layer off, he’s the villain of this story.

This movie for me is by far Cristian Bale's best. The character was perfect in every way and he, with his talent, made sure it was a success. And four years later seeing him in the driver with that extreme thinness, you realize the kind of professional this guy is. Just smoke it.

The sad music really helps to change the context of the scene. Instead of something upbeat that would make the whole thing seem amusing, your instinct is to feel a bit sad for Bateman because of how dependent on his material goods he is to find any happiness od meaning. They hide the ugly underneath a mask of perfection and any crack in the mask wounds them bad, therefor the mask need to be air tight. Masterpiece of a film, and fits well to celebrate Halloween honestly. With such iconic scenes, soundtrack/music, plot and a legendary cast, especially with Christian Bale, Dafoe, and many others It's truly iconic. Based on the novel, it was a great rendition, and depicts the 80s very brilliantly only with the mind of a Narcissistic psychopath which it was intended too, The film was ahead of it's time, and what a great mention of Phil Collins, and Genesis, glad those legends work made it here to!

The best part is that people hunted down the catalogues for those years and realised that none of the outfits make a lick of sense. The patterns, cuts and colours don't go together at all. Bret Easton Ellis confirmed this was entirely deliberate, the endless recitation of accessories and brands throughout the novel is meant to just become meaningless noise.

I'm reading American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis and I have to say that I can only see Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman when I read the book. That only goes to show, in my eyes at least, just how Christian Bale nailed the character in the movie. Its amazing. The book was very controversial when it was released in 1991. It was hated on by people like Gloria Steinem (Christian Bale's step mom in real life) for how it portrayed women and how shallow Wall Street Yuppies were. But now, thirty years later, American Psycho is considered a masterpiece both as a novel and as a movie. Damn, it even has a friggen musical with Matt Smith as Patrick Bateman. This only goes to show that if you truly believe in what it is you are making and if you stick with it then one day it will be appreciated.

the focus in both the movie and in the book, is very much on material status. we see it here in this scene, long explanations of everything he´s wearing/ using, especially the brand if it´s clothes, accessories and such. heck at one point he´s stuffed a body in a overnight bag and is loading the bag in a car trunk, and someone he knows spots him and starts talking to him, and he´s like " ohh shit" and the person looks at the bag ( and it´s clearly not a set of golf clubs that´s in there) and the person just compliments on how the nice the bag is.

Wow. This scene is chilling. I'm glad that Christian Bale did this movie and not Leonardo DiCaprio (that's who the director originally wanted but he had other commitments). I think Bale was perfect for this role. I can't think of anyone who could have done a better job.

DiCaprio is a fine actor, to be sure...but he'd have been a lousy choice to play Bateman. His style of acting is more demonstrative, loud, even over-the-top. Bale tends to play things at the other end of the spectrum: cold, aloof, detached, at times virtually flat-lining emotionally. These being qualities/affectations that define a soulless, self-absorbed, and narcissistic character like Patrick Bateman. Little wonder that "American Psycho" was his breakout performance. I think it allowed him to play to his strengths as an actor to a degree that if one didn't know any better, it wouldn't be hard to believe it was written with him in mind.
