If there’s anything that’s uncommon in a genre such as hip-hop, it’s self-depreciation. Built upon an immovable bedrock of bravado, hip-hop is a sport in which the boastful prosper and the modest are all too often forgotten. Based on the days of battle rapping in which the goal was to prove your superiority while taking aim at your opponent’s weaknesses, it's not uncommon to hear rappers make outlandish proclamations of their own abilities.
Little more than two major projects into his career, Polo G was already labeling himself “the goat.”
Similarly, rappers such as Jay Z and Lil Wayne were dubbing themselves the “best rapper alive” long before the culture was willing to accept those tags at face value.
With the industry more overcrowded and competitive than ever, it pays to be cocky, and if a fanbase wants to fight your case for you, then it doesn't make much sense to dispute their claims
Courtesy of this culture-wide endorsement of bragging, hearing any shred of humility can be hard to wrap our heads around. So, when J Cole seemed to be purposefully eliminating himself from all of the endless discussion over who’s at the top of the mountain out of himself. Drake & Kendrick in the modern era, the world was taken aback.

The way I see it: Drake is for the clubs and parties where ass is being thrown or for people going through heartbreak. Kendrick is an Anthem for the hood or those who take rap very seriously due to how laced his works are. J Cole (my fav) is for the average Joe going through everyday life. He's got bops, he's got moods and he's got bars. A bit of everything.

I don’t get how J.Cole saying “SOME PEOPLE saying ‘I’m running third’ they threw the bronze at me” is an admission of defeat. All he did was acknowledge that a lot of people consider him to be the lesser of the big 3, that not him saying he is. I’m sure he doesn’t believe that because on tracks and features more recent than Heaven EP he call’s himself the “greatest alive” and the “greatest one doing it right now”.

That may be boring to your average 16 year old trying to act tough but it's refreshing to a grown up that wants to hear a rapper act his age for once. It didn't go over people's heads. It's just poorly arranged. The tracklisting could have been better to tell the story more consistently. Also his singing is weak accept that. There many more things that made that record weak. Cole's discog is the reason he is running third to me Drake ain't one or two tho for me Cole is less boring than Drake by a mile. And what he has achieved by not going pop after his debut is commendable. Never sold out since Nas criticised him and I respect that.

As of today, Cole is the best rapper alive. He hasn’t took his foot off the gas. Off-Season is arguably the best album that dropped last year. He dropped a super dope posse album with his label and other random artists. And he also dropped a very dope album with KOD in 2018. He hasn’t stopped. Meanwhile Kendrick can take a 50 year break and still be mentioned.. Drake can drop a mediocre album and still be mentioned.. stop w the disrespect

Honestly I’m in the right generation. Jermaine is one of the biggest reason. He’s one of the few artists, that i can listen especially bcz of content. He has so much succeeded yet so humble & intelligent. Like Kevin Hart said that Kdot & Cole they doesn’t highlight themselves success bcz they don’t want to be highlighted even with their biggest success. I like Drake tho don’t get me wrong he’s great especially in late 00s-mid 10s. NWTS is my fav Drake album ever. But Cole & Kendrick giving so much authenticity that motivates me to be better everyday with God’s grace through their music. Cole a Legend 🐐

If Drake doesn’t write his own bars, why is he in this top 3 conversation? I don’t get these standards. Diddy, Dre, or Will Smith wasn’t making any rap top 5 with Nas n Jay cuz they didn’t write their own bars. That’s automatic disqualification. If anything Cole should at least be higher than Drake by default because he writes his own lyrics.

The vast majority of Drake’s music is too personal and clearly written by him. Drake took some songs from a guy and credited him as a writer so the guy could get paid for it. This whole “ghostwriter” thing has been debunked several times, y’all just don’t like the dude. And that’s fine, but just say that 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Also, you can get writer’s credits for suggesting a line or an ad lib. Check the credits for your favorite rappers and I guarantee you’ll see other niggas’ names there for “songwriting”😴

Cole I think is an example of where being the best in public opinion doesn’t drive him. I can relate because I don’t wanna be known as the best but a master of my craft through and through. I don’t have to be the GOAT, I’m fine with being elite. I think bravado is great to have but I feel like even the “diss tracks” that Cole dropped are like lessons and conversations on a person’s missteps rather than tearing down the other side. J Cole is a gem, and shouldn’t be under appreciated

This video alone tells me this world is so FUCKKKKKKED up. It is clear that this man spirit is so far ahead of the people you are comparing him to, that he knows that he is better, but humble himself because he is mindful of the game that is being played and knows he not only wants to play that game but recognizes the damage that comes from playing that game. So in reality he is far more superior then what is actually being portrayed.

@@katleholehlokoane9663 NO, you Cole haters are astonishing. Just because Kendrick tries something different, whether it be more jazz infused or whatever the case, doesn't make it the best. I never once said Kendrick was bad. He's arguably the greatest rn but Cole has been keeping the true spirit of hiphop, what it used to sound like in the 90s until it turned into pop music, alive.

@@rickyrichreacts9667 This reply is mind numbing. Do you know the roots of Hip Hop music? Hip Hop didn't start in the 90s, research about the genres that came before Hip Hop and influenced it. Kendrick is not experimental in fact by infusing Jazz on the TPAB album he was honouring the roots of the genre. He only used Jazz on 2 albums. I listen to J Cole, in fact I was introduced to him way before I knew who Kendrick was. Don't let your love for an artist cloud your judgement. We're trying to be objective here.

I think through his change in his feature philosophy and working with artists, he slowly began to stop putting so much focus on being a competitive rapper solely especially with Kendrick Lamar which is why I think The Off-Season was the album it was. Not a concept nor a record that attempted to catch the ear of fans through catchy tunes; just a masterclass of lyricism that made J Cole proud and only his fans proud. I'm happy J Cole isn't trying to catch Kendrick or Drake, cause simply he isn't neither of them nor should be. He's the everyman or rap.....
