Atlanta rapper JID turned his back on a football scholarship to pursue music, working for years to develop a quickly shifting lyrical style that stood out in a sea of soundalike rappers. After time spent collaborating with the Spillage Village collective, JID signed a solo deal with J Cole's label and produced a string of highly musical and powerfully complex albums, reaching a new wave of critical acclaim with 2018's masterful DiCaprio 2.
JID was born Destin Route on Halloween in 1990. Raised in East Atlanta, JID (a name adopted and adapted from what his grandmother called him as a jittery child) had his first connection with music through his parents' collection of classic funk and soul LPs. After a stint at Hampton University playing football, JID also hooked up with fellow MCs as part of the Spillage Village collective. By 2012, he had dropped out of college to focus on music, and in 2014 he headed out on what would be a productive tour with EarthGang, Bas, and Ab-Soul. Touring allowed J.I.D. to hone his skills, and a year later he recorded and dropped the DiCaprio EP, which saw him team up with a host of producers, as well as EarthGang. While keen to distance himself from the generic abrasive trap sound that had dominated the Atlanta scene, JID wanted to deliver something that was more than just about a beat, and instead focused his time and effort on lyrics as well. In 2016, JID, with the rest of the Spillage Village crew, released the album Bears Like This Too Much, which saw the rapper displaying his unique delivery and inspired lyrics. In 2017, he announced that he had signed to J Cole's Dreamville label (a connection made with the rapper via JID's part in the 2014 tour with Bas and Cole's friend and producer Cedric Brown), which released the single Never and full-length The Never Story at the beginning of the year. In September of 2018, he issued the single "151 Rum," the first offering from DiCaprio 2, his sophomore full-length and sequel to his 2015 EP. The album arrived in late November and included cameos from 6LACK, A$AP Ferg, Method Man, and others. DiCaprio 2 was received warmly by fans and critics alike, appearing on many year-end best-of lists despite its being released so late in the year.

Isaiah Mc Intosh difference between and JId and those niggas is his immense amount of sauce with crazy technical ability
@Isaiah_McIntosh
@Isaiah_McIntosh 5 жыл бұрын
@@shabaclank3711 Really I wouldn't say it's the technical ability. It's his dynamism and creativity coupled with his ability to paint pictures and clear messaging that stands out. Guys like logic or hopsin are crazy technical but it blends together into just fast rapping whereas JID is more unique and interesting even if it's not necessarily technically more difficult. He manages to slide into early Kendrick (think rigamortis) but with a much more versatile and polished tool kit of flows. It really helps that he can slow it down and use melody effectively which bodes well for his longevity once we get over the dazzle of his flow and learn his story intimately.

J Masters honestly being as old as 19 isn’t always all it’s cracked up to be. I think JID being 28 just means he has been through more this that some younger kids, and he can bring some wisdom to the rap game that other up and coming artists just can’t.

Tyler Landon I disagree, feel like Denzel is one of the rare few who has made underground sensibilities more palatable for a mainstream audience recently. TABOO super conceptual with out there elements and it’s one of the most talked about albums of 2018; ZUU a whole summer bop. I think we’re in a sweet spot rn with artists like JID, Saba, JPEG, Earthgang, Denzel etc. putting out actual substantive art that takes talent while still getting (at least) more recognition than they’d usually get compared to current lil rappers.

I like that 1320video street racing clip that was added. Fits so well idk why. I already consider J.I.D one of the GOAT'S in rap and he has a lot more to show us. His lyrics and flows are impecable.

Let's not forget, Denzel Curry is also both a lyrical rapper and in line with the psychedelic trap music of today, while having his own completely unique musical style as well.

I’ve been havin very similar thoughts about this dude. I’ve always been into the more lyrical MC’s and been most impressed by artists like Kendrick, and still am of course. But like the video said, it’s been clear as day in recent times that MC skill just isn’t enough and that’s the reason J Cole didn’t really appeal to me. But JID has stood out since I first heard 151 rum I was SOLD. This dude here has everything a rap nerd could want in an artist but with both an originality, the bars, the flows and the sincerity that only calls to mind maybe one person and that’s Andre 3000. But JID is 100% his own man. I only think of Andre because both of these dudes have a similar toolset that’s pretty much so far beyond what most rappers….slash that, musicians of all genres, could ever hope to be capable of. And let’s not forget the beats he uses. Dance now, 151 rum, Off Deez and pretty much the whole catalog is some of the coolest, most unique tracks that most MC’s wouldn’t have the ear or creativity to mess with. It’s funny that this video mentions Radiohead, because I hear the same kind of groundbreaking inventive uniqueness in JIDs stuff and end up with a feeling kinda similar to how I felt when I first heard Kid A a lifetime ago. OutKast’s Aquemini comes to mind too. And the fact that he’s got bars like no one else in the industry right now, makes him both an innovator and a master of the craft in a traditional sense. Hearing his catalog is just exciting and give the art hungry part of my mind something that hasn’t been available since the mid 2010’s with albums like GKMC and TPAB by Kendrick or Kanye’s Life of Pablo. Donda, Pusha t’s It’s Getting Dry, and less than I can count on one hand are probably the only records on the level with what JID’s shown us. I do have one note however, and that’s that while I do love his albums, I think it’s still more about his stand out tracks and he’s gotten damn close and is totally positioned to release his Good Kid Maad City level album where the theme is a little more focused and has a unique identity which I would love to see happen even though he got damn close with DiCaprio 2. But still for now, JID and maybe Denzel Curry if he goes a little further into left field and storytelling, are my greatest hopes for mainstream music as high art. I haven’t seen any indication of JID’s material dropping in quality whatsoever so I hope we are still watching a massive come up the keeps rising.
