I thought the correct response might be the letter ‘O’, which is the oldest unchanged letter in terms of shape since its adoption in the Phoenician alphabet at around 1300 BCE. It’s quite the historic letter.

Shocked this was a triple stumper. Maybe people were thinking too much about what explorers actually reached versus what they thought they reached

Loved this clue. Loved immediately getting it correct. Beautiful twist. The predominant answer by the contestants is for someone who did not sail from Cadiz. He didn’t sail. And wrong direction. Clearly a stumper for this group - well done, Jeopardy! 👍

Interestingly, I myself thought of Columbus but rejected it because I couldn't see how he could set sail into the Atlantic ocean and then think that he had somehow reached the Indian Ocean merely as the result of the passage of time, without some other event occurring like reaching or passing a large land mass or something. In other words, what happened on the 33rd day that made him think he had suddenly reached the Indian Ocean? It just didn't make sense to me, so I rejected 'Columbus" as an answer.

This was not the sort of Answer I was expecting. I took "historic letters" literally, and was assuming it would be about alphabet letters that are no longer used. Still, got the question right on this one - went with the obvious.

The letter is obviously referring to a sea voyage, which would rule out Polo who traveled over a LAND route to China! DUH!!

An overthought FJ.... Columbus mistakenly thought he was in the "East Indies" when he discovered America. And he was required by Queen Isabella of Spain (who funded this exploration) to keep a detailed journal of his voyage. So very simply clue was definitely overanalyzed.

Yeah I overthought it, too. I Initially thought it was Columbus, but I couldn't fathom (!) how he could have thought he had gone from the Atlantic ocean to the Indian Ocean simply as a result of the passage of time. What could have happened on the 33rd day that made him think he had suddenly reached the Indian Ocean? It just didn't make sense to me, so I rejected it.

I ruled out Magellan because he was Portuguese and Marco Polo because he never set sail from Spain. I knew Colombus left from Palos de la Frontera and Cadiz in his voyages. The Indian ocean was a big distraction, but I picked Colombus anyway.

At first I thought Vasco de Gama, but thought it must be Marco Polo. I was probably thinking into it too much.
@greatkentuckian9032
@greatkentuckian9032 7 ай бұрын
Most of Marco Polos trips were on land, so I knew it wasn't him. Vasco de Gama was Portuguese, so he was crossed off. Magellan never lived to reach the Indian Ocean, so he was out. Finally Columbus made the most sense, but it felt odd and a little too cliche. But I was glad I got it right.

@@greatkentuckian9032 Yeah, that's the problem I have with most Final Jeopardy clues: the answers are too "cliche", meaning the obvious guess is usually the right one. It doesn't usually do you well to think too much into the clues.

It is astonishing that the clue writers thought that this clue was worthy of an adult tournament. It is even more astonishing that none of the contestants was able to come up with the obvious response. (Have they never heard of the West Indies? Or maybe they thought it was a trick question?) Most astonishing of all is that Columbus thought that he had reached India. He must not have heard of Eratosthenes' calculation of the earth's circumference.
@seikibrian8641
@seikibrian8641 7 ай бұрын
Since there was no practical way to measure longitude while at sea in Columbus' day, knowing the circumference of the earth would not have helped much.
