A tour of the historic CG36500, which participated in the rescue of 32 men from the tanker Pendleton 59 years ago.

This is the origin of the movie, "The Finest Hour." What an incredible story it was.

What the crew done was absolutly amazing saving 32 people in a small lifeboat with huge waves and just one engine, during night no Radar no GPS by then, the compass was ripped off by a wave. A real heroic act.

I was at Cape Cod Canal Sta. Sometime after that. We had the CG 36506 there. I am still wondering how they managed to get 36 grown men on that thing.

I've seen the movie and WOW!! Brilliantly portrayed... and records Bernie and his crew's bravery and courage.

Coasties are heroes for every mariner! I grew up on the North Pacific coast and have an uncle who was stationed at Port Angeles, Wa. As kids we used to go out to Ediz Hook and watch the crews do their work. As a teenager my uncle took me on a road trip across the United States and we visited his buddies who were stationed on Cape Cod. Talk about being a lucky kid- I idolized those guys. Semper Paratus!

When I went in, they were bringing in the 44' MLB to replace the 36' MLBs that were in service. the CG 36500 at Chatham and CG36506 at Cape Cod Canal. The new ones were supposed to be self righting. If they capsized, the would came back upright. Those things were tested on the Columbia River bar. Don't know which station it was, Astoria, or Cape Disappointment. Only CG Sta. that drew Hazardous Duty Pay. I went in in '65. I ended up getting a full view of the CG. Peacetime Coastie and a Combat Coastie ( Vietnam ).

They were pretty slow. Only had a GMC 4-71 in there.

I just watched the Disney movie again for the ??? time, Awesome Story, Nice restoration, Great job,I live on the left coast, and seeing this boat in person is on my " bucket list"!! Thanks
