HISTORIC RALLYING at Oulton Park! Classic car drifts, fails, sounds and action

The 2024 Tour of Cheshire historic rally stage on the Oulton Park skid pan saw classic cars on the limit and beyond on the almost undriveable, rain-soaked circuit!
Classic cars from the 1920s to the 1990s attacked the stage at the Cheshire racetrack on this rainswept morn, and there was a great plethora of classic rally cars, from many Ford Escorts to Volvo Amazons, and from a wonderful Alfa Romeo Guilietta Sprint to a modified Datsun 280Z
(all cars identified in the video!).
Also expect a close look at the classic rally cars both on and off this Tour of Cheshire stage, with a quick walkaround of the car park containing many of these historic rally cars, before they left to set timed laps of the stage, ideally facing in the correct direction!

Good vid Harley. Just a hint on Datsun engine capacity. The model number tells you the engine size ÷10, eg 240Z=2.4 litres, 280Z=2.8 litres.

The drift/rally circuit is surfaced with low grip tarmac, which apparently also has ground glass mixed in with it to make it even more slippy. I was helping set it up for the Gold Cup in 2019 and managed to get a 325 diesel, auto, E36 3 series BMW sideways, whilst towing a trailer loaded with cones and barriers. Spent the rest of the day in an autosolo prepped MX5 (MIG - spec diff) and knobbly gravel tyres skating around that circuit. It requires a very delicate touch to avoid facing the wrong direction at every corner.

Yes it is a glass lined surface to make it extra slippy!

I keep saying this Harley but I genuinely mean it, your videos just keep getting better and better and this one is no exception. I thoroughly enjoyed it and your commentary delivered in a confident and informed manner. The Volvo Amazons performed impressively. Great recovery by the Lotus MK2 Corina and the A40 didn't embarrass itself either. What can one say about the Ford Model A the fact it has survived to go around a track is in itself amazing. Car for me the Datsun 280Z

Nice to see the old rally cars. I remember of hearing about the Monte Carlo Rally back in the 1960s which is about the only rally that made the news here. Especially the first time the Mini won it outright with no handicap. Hope your hands have thawed out. Holding a camera in the rain drains the heat from your fingers and hands. Great video.

There were many other famous rally's in the 1950's and 60's that had media attention here, other than the Monte Carlo......
