Mike takes on the challenge of the October 2019 Historic Service Rifle match at the National Shooting Centre, Bisley, UK, with his trusty 2-groove Long Branch made Lee-Enfield No.4 in .303 British. This match consisted of 5 practices at 100, 200 and 300 yds, with the rifles shot "as-issued". Divisions were "Classic" (SMLE), "Veteran" (No.4), "Veteran Optic" (No.4 Mk.1(T)), and "All Comers" (foreign muck).

Mike congratulations for coming over and taking part, never mind the fact you actually won! This match was conceived on the CSR forum from an idea of mine which I rather bigheadedly take any credit for. Those taking part in CSR with AR15's and the like also wanted to have a go with their No.4's but didn't want to swap classes for fear of losing any league points they had collected on SO & PR class, hence the match. 225 is a first rate score, well done!

For people who don't know about the National Shooting Centre at Bisley it is much more than just 'a range'. There are over 24 Clubhouses dedicated to around that number of clubs (when Bloke said 'join one of the clubs' at Bisley he wasn't joking), at least one Gunmaker and other Gunsmithing services, several accommodation blocks and 8 ranges of up to 1,500 yards. In typical British manner, the Century Range has 108 Lanes (at up to 600 yards), the Short Siberia range is in the middle of nowhere (and shoots 5 *metres* to 200 *yards*) (edit: originally said 128 Lanes at Century, from a (UK) NRA page that was in error)

Good shooting - well done on Gold :D Also - is that rifle a tad short for you? Had me thinking you might need a butt pad or similar on it, as it looks like it kept slipping off your shoulder, a key indicator to an iffy fit? Or is that prohibited by the rules of the shoot in question?
@BlokeontheRange
@BlokeontheRange 4 жыл бұрын
Both. It has a short butt, which may be too short (I have N and L available to me, but I shoot well with it as-is, so haven't changed it over) and adding a butt pad is against the rules. That being said, rifles with smooth, curved metal butt plates tend to slip all over the place on recoil irrespective so I'm not sure it would make any difference.

I just remembered something. Many years ago, not long after arriving in the US, my non gun loving ex-wife allowed me to enter an off the beaten track fishing tackle store. Often these stores can turn up some weird oldie fashioned gear that used to be very effective in the their day, just now superseded. There was very interesting old gear in there. Over the counter, for sale, and easily acquired then, in Connecticut, one wood furnitured SLR, and one Lee Enfield #4. I expressed interest and before I knew it I was sitting in the car empty handed.
