Are you also ready to get snuggly the moment the sun goes down? I'm living a very hygge kind of life at the moment...
Today, let's take a trip to the far north and have a look at the vast and spreading routes of the Vikings. Of course they're mostly known for raiding the Frankish lands and the British isles, but they also entertained extensive trade networks in the East with Slavic groups and the Byzantine empire. Plus they explored the Northern seas, making it all the way to the American coast where they even built settlements for a while.
I hope you enjoy this topic as much I liked researching it! Triggers include educational ASMR in a soft spoken voice with light Austrian accent, pointing, map tracing and page flipping in a book.
The two beautiful books are:
Juha Nurminen and Matti Lainema, "A History of Arctic Exploration: Discovery, Adventure and Endurance at the Top of the World"
Ian Barnes, "Historic Atlas of the Celtic World"

Pretty sure the reason for going on raids is because of relatively poor soil quality in Norway and Sweden and if not for that the immense labor of removing the forests that fill a large part of the area. Then it was easier to go out and trade/raid. Additionally the low amount of sun you get up in northern Europe makes it so that you need other sources of vitamin d which the fishers got from cod liver, farmers away from the coast would have issues getting vitamin d and thus get weak bones and fatigue. Down in Denmark the population density was and still is higher and soil quality higher, even vitamin d isn't as big an issue because of the lower latitude. This also reflects that you see more farming down in Denmark in this time period. As to the reason of differing soil quality we need to see back to the last ice age where glaciers took sediment from Norway and Sweden and deposited it on the east coast of Denmark and a bit of Northern Germany, it can also be seen that the lower quality western lands (the one where the sediment didn't reach) has a poor quality of soil to this day, with a high amount of coarse sand and thus having poor water retention and the already existing sediment got washed out when the glaciers melted. Now a personal theory not confirmed by any source I know is that most of the Vikings that originated from Denmark came from western Jutland where the soil was too poor to even be farmed before talented German help was acquired in 1723. An old tale that is told here in Iceland describes what happened to the norse in Vinland. The story goes that as the norse started settling down they also started mingling with the native Americans living there, establishing trade and relations. But on a day where the norse and Americans had gathered for another trade the norse had brought cheese with them, and wanted trade it for some goods from the Americans. So they offered them the cheese. But as the Americans weren't tolerant to lactose from the milk they got sick from the cheese and suspected the norse of poisoning. And as they days went by, relations soured and the Americans drove the norse out of Vinland.

people often forget that the vikings were part of germanic tribes, thats why countries like the netherlands and germany share alot of culture with the nordics, also many people in the netherlands and nothern germany are descendants of vikings too, theyre often a mix of north and west germanic!

Oh interesting, I would have thought it's common knowledge, but maybe that's some Germanic bias from me haha.

Books like "downfall" explore the end of viking settlements in Greenland and NA. The primary theory for NA Abandonment was their ferocious attitude towards the indigenous Americans. Coming late to Christianity the vikings became rabid zealots (and much like later Spaniards) butchered Inuit and indigenous Americans on sight. Their settlements in NA were almost certainly destroyed as a reprisal for their barbarity, whereas Greeland indeed was abandoned, likely due to the little chill of the 1400's and an inability to be resupplied by Europe or the inuit. Though it also surmised that Greenlanders chose not to eat fish and why they did that and instead relied on pork and cattle severely curtailed their chances of survival

@@MelangeASMR I believe the author is Jared Diamond and while it doesn't have maps it does speak on the fall of numerous civilizations such as the Maya, Easter Island, and Pueblo cultures. Great channel, I learn lots from you. Thank you.

It’s pretty interesting! Thank you very much for educating content! 10:15 but the whole area here was under Kievan Rus from 800s to 1300s (present Belarus and Ukraine). Russia didn’t existed at all at that time. Around 1500s the dependents of Rurik came to that land (which had nothing to do with Kievan Rus before) to expand the territory. I know what I’m saying and I do this to clear the things about “Russian history”. They always were stealing history and culture from others especially from Ukraine (that’s real facts). They claimed the Rurik dynasty to themselves which isn’t true. They stole the name “Rus” and made it into “Russia” although it never belonged to them. The truth is they have very mixed and messed culture from others and let that be their special thing but no, they prefer to lie and steal instead.
