India and the Himalayas: On April 21st, 1947, before the British Raj withdrew from the Republic of India, Nepal had secured recognition as an Independent nation from the United States. This was followed on April 25, 1947 by an agreement of friendship and commerce providing for the establishment of diplomatic and consular relations. Then, in May 1949, Nepal established diplomatic relations with France at ambassadorial level. Thus, even before Nehru made the ominous statements on Nepal, it had entered into diplomatic relations with the U.K., the U.S. and France, which made it impossible for the Indians to contemplate action against Nepal, as was done against the Indian princely states. Even during the twilight years of the Rana regime, Nepal wisely chose to expand its ties to the outside world to enhance its standing and international visibility. A key milestone was Nepal's initial move to secure membership of the United Nations in 1947. Because of cold war politics this was delayed until December 15, 1955 when Nepal, along with 15 other nations, was admitted to the UNO. This is the very reason why Nepal is not within the part of the Modern Union of India. None of the other Indian state ever got a chance to be admitted to the UNO. Not even Tibet. Today Republic of India is a staunch ally and a strong supporter of the Tibetan sovereignty movement and its debate is an internationalised issue is known across the world community. Kashmir, State of Goa and Hyderabad State were never recognized as independent nations by its own rights in the UNO. In case of Bhutan, it was too, not recognized at that time, as an Independent nation by the UNO. Bhutan however, managed to escape Indian annexation because it agreed to become an Indian Protectorate and the Indians didn't proceed with the annexation. Sikkim however, refused and Republic of India did annex Sikkim. It's not as if the Republic of India willingly let Nepal go. It had no other option. All remaining countries that were not admitted to the UNO at that time like Jammu and Kashmir, Mizoram, Nagaland etc., Republic of India had to annexed them all.

History of Bengal Region: The Bengalese people are the main ethnic group in the East Indian Region of Bengal (now divided between Bangladesh and the Union of India) in Southeast Asia. They speak Bengali (বাংলা Bangla), a language of the eastern branch of the Indo-Aryan languages. They are natively concentrated in the nation of Bangladesh and in the Indian states of West Bengal and Tripura. Some of the most well established Bengali communities are in the Middle East, Japan, Malaysia, United Kingdom and United States. Remnants of civilisation in the greater Bengal region date back 4,000 years, when the region was settled by Dravidian, Tibeto-Burman and Austroasiatic peoples. The origin of the word Bangla ~ Bengal is unknown, but it is believed to be derived from the Dravidian-speaking tribe Bang that settled in the area around the year 1000 BC. After the arrival of Indo-Aryans, the Kingdoms around Bengal were first described in the Atharvaveda about 1000 BC. From the 6th century BC, Magadha expanded to include most of the Bihar and Bengal regions. It was one of the four main kingdoms of India at the time of Buddha. Magadha extended over nearly all of South Asia except the Indus Valley Region of Pakistan, reaching its greatest extent under the Buddhist emperor Ashoka the Great in the 3rd century BC. One of the earliest foreign references to Bengal is the mention of a land ruled by the King Xandrammes named Gangaridai by the Greeks around 100 BC. The word is speculated to have come from Gangahrd (Land with the Ganges in its heart) in reference to an area in Bengal. Later from the 3rd to the 6th centuries AD, the kingdom of Magadha served as the seat of the Gupta Empire. The Kols, also known as Kolarians, are the original inhabitants of modern-day West Bengal and North-east India. The term Kol has been corrupted by the Aryan-Sanskritic speakers to the word "kalu", meaning both "black" and "ugly", in almost all of the 16 major languages of the Indian subcontinent. The Kolarians are a Dravidian peoples stock group, whose descendant communities can be found also in West Bengal and elsewhere in the eastern part of the East India. Most geological scholars will contend that most of Bangladesh was fashioned 1 to 6.5 million years ago during the Tertiary era. Semi-recent excavations in the Deolpota village of Western Bengal seem to suggest that a Palaeolithic civilisation in the region existed about one hundred thousand years ago. A 10,000 to 15,000 year old stone structure in Rangamati is the primary evidence of Palaeolithic civilization along with a hand axe found in the mountainous inclines of the Feni District. This Neo-stone age began 3,000 BC lasting almost 1500 years. Similar tools were found in Sitakunda of the eastern region Chittagong, and near Comilla District. The sparsely forested hills in eastern Bengal strewn with fertile valleys imparted a hospitable location for Neolithic settlements. Physically, the indigenous peoples of Eastern India were long-headed, dark skinned, broad-nosed, and short in stature. Sometimes labelled as "Negritos" and "Negroids", their physical features are unchanged today among the lowest castes of Bengal, mainly the peasants, as well as 95% of population of West Bengal today who derive from these lower castes and tribes.

Etymology of Bangladesh and Banga Pradesh: Bangladesh is a new state in an ancient land. Like the rest of South Asia, it has been described as continually challenged by contradictions, marred by inconsistencies to say the least. It is neither a distinct geographical entity, nor a well-defined historical unit. Nevertheless, it is among the 10 most populous nations; a place whose search for a political identity has been protracted, intense and agonising. The word Bangladesh is derived from the word “Vanga” which was first mentioned in the Hindu scripture Aitareya Aranyaka (composed between 500 BC and 500 AD). Bengal was reputedly first colonised by Prince Vanga, the son of King Bali and Queen Sudeshna of the Lunar dynasty. The roots of the term Vanga may be traced to languages in the neighbouring areas like Pali (Pāli) is a Prakrit language native to the area. One school of linguists maintain that the word “Vanga” is actually derived from the Tibetan word “Bans” which implies “wet and moist”. According to this interpretation, Bangladesh literally refers to a wetland. Another school of thought is of the opinion that the term “Vangla” is derived from Bodo (aborigines of Assam) words “Bang” and “la” which connote “Wide plains.” The exact origin of the word Bangla or Bengal is unknown, though it is believed to be derived from the Dravidian-speaking tribe Bang/Banga that settled in the area around the year 1000 B.C. and they opined that Bangla was actually Bangal and that ‘al’ in it meant enclosure. Today, ‘aal’ is taken to mean home, from a sense of ‘outer wall making an enclosure’, in which what exactly Bangladesh is today. Other accounts speculate that the name is derived from Vanga (bôngo), which came from the Austric word "Bonga" meaning the Sun-god. According to Mahabharata, Purana, Harivamsha; Vanga was one of the adopted sons of King Vali who founded the Vanga kingdom. The Muslim Accounts refer that "Bong", a son of Hind (son of Hām who was a son of Prophet Noah/Nooh) colonised the area for the first time. The earliest reference to "Vangala"(bôngal) has been traced in the Nesari plates (805 AD) of Rashtrakuta Govinda III which speak of Dharmapala as the King of Vangala. Shams-ud-din Ilyas Shah took the title "Shah-e-Bangalah" and united the whole region under its one government for the first time. The West Bengal state legislative assembly has passed a Resolution saying that the Indian state of West Bengal will, henceforth, be called Pashchim Banga or Banga Pradesh. No one will tell you what ‘Bang’ in Bangladesh means, except some bold joiners of the dots in ancient history. Bangladesh is old Banga or Bangla with a history as old as 1,000 BC. Does it originate in the Tibetan word ‘bans’ which means wet or moist? Banga (Bengal) is a wet country, crisscrossed by a thousand rivers and washed by monsoons and floods from the East Himalayas. The Chinese text Wei-lueh (3rd century AD) referred to Pan-yueh (ie Vanga) as the country of Han-yueh (Xan-gywat) or the Ganga. Some others believe that the name originated in the Bodo (original Assamese aborigines in North-eastern India) ‘Bang La’, which means wide plains. One of the tribes which emerged from the Indus Civilisations (Pakistan) after its demise had entered the plains of Bengal, while others went elsewhere. They were called the Bong tribe and spoke Dravidian. We know from many Ancient Aryan texts of a tribe called Banga. Anciently, Sri Lanka was Singhal, home of lions, which changed to Sihala (sic!) in 543 BC. The Portuguese called it Cilaon probably from Sanskrit Sri Lanka, which the Sri Lankans prefer today. The Portuguese are funny. They changed Arabic ‘mausim’ to ‘monsaon’, which has given us the word ‘monsoon’. In Punjabi, the word ‘aal’ is found in two words: ‘aalna’ (diminutive) for nest and ‘aalay-dawalay’ for ‘that which surrounds’. ‘Him’ in Sanskrit means ‘frozen’, from where we have the word Himal or Himala. ‘Shivala’, used by Allama Iqbal in Urdu, it means home of Shiva. From the sense of ‘surrounding’ we get the Hindi word ‘aali’ which is the root of our Urdu word ‘sahaili’ meaning ‘friend of the bride’ because girlfriends sit ‘around’ the bride. ‘Sa’ is the prefix for ‘good’. This could be cognate with ‘saali’ (sister-in-law) and ‘saala’. The home of the father-in-law (sassur) is called ‘sassur-aal’. Lovers too are included, as in the bhajan ‘angana main ayay aali’. Here ‘aali’ is master (of home). In Sanskrit the language that originated in Kashmir there are dozens of words for home, many of them are indirect like ‘aal’. In the Urdu word ‘ghonsala’ (nest) there is ‘ghun’ (concealed) and ‘shala’ (home). A whole lot of them come from the sense of being ‘cut off’. Remnants of civilisation in the Greater Bengal Region date back four thousand years, when the region was settled by Dravidian, Tibeto-Burman, and Austro - Asiatic peoples. The exact origin of the word “Bangla” or “Bengal” is not known, though it is believed to be derived from Bang, the Dravidian-speaking Bongo tribe that settled in the area around the year 1000 BCE. The same here applies to the naming of Bangala desh or Bangadesh. There are various logic presented by various people of various disciplines. The Banga-desh is a land of the two mighty rivers of East India Region respectively, one flows from east and other one from west of the country. The area covered jointly by these two rivers were probably known as “Ganga Lohit Desha”, which gradually became Gangalo Desh and Gangal Desh and then to Bangal Desh or Bangla desh or Bangadesha. Bangalo in place of Gangal is probably used to differentiate from the land of Ganga, i.e, from Hardwar onwards along the route of Ganga. ”Banga” means a place located near to river in Sanskrit, which fits with both the parts of Bengal. “Alaya” (As in Himalaya) in Sanskrit means “house” Bangla is also known as Vanga. The movement against break up of Bagladesh by British was famously known as “Vang Bhang” movement, The letter n was incorporated to ease pronunciation and form the linguistically correct and meaningful name later on. Bhang in Hindi means -to break. You are right about “aal” as home. Actually, “aalay” means home itself. “Devalay” Home of Gods, that is Temple, Mrigalay is home of animals (mrig), that is Zoe. Vanga has thus been a distinct geographical identity and the restoration of the old name can be one option. And Bengal is nothing but the Vanga, and the easiest way to maintain the legacy is to drop the 'West' from Western Bengal. Vanga is synonymous with Banga because the alphabets V and B are interchangeable in Sanskrit. Banga in its etymological sense means Vanga or Vanka - marshy land. It denotes the entire stretch of lower Bengal when the sea receded and the landmass became fit for human habitation. One more thought BANGA - BA stands for river Brahmaputra and NGA for Ganga, as both the river meets here. Sanskrit had few words to describe a place - PUR, STHAN, AALAY. So Singapore - SINGH+PORE (SINGH = LION, PORE/PUR = City). Even Afghanistan, Dalitistan, Dravidiastan, East Turkestan, Hindustan, Kazakhstan, Khalistan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Sakastan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, have all enriched and derived from the very name from Sanskrit. (STAN = STHAN). Places which use AALAY - Himalay or Meghalay. * Nepal: Naya-pal Kingdom of Naya. * Bengal: Vaang desh. = Desh means country and Desi means native or relating of and attachment to something of the region respectively.
