I am 43 and remember when all this was new. I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed your video. Amazing. What a trip down memory lane. Not only do I love SamSho, but you told me things thatI never knew about the depth that was the original Samurai Spirits. Admittedly, I always have gone to II as my go-to because I love Genjuro. But I remember how cool SamSho was in the 90’s and am now going to go back to play the original. Thanks for a marvelous old-school documentary.

That's more Killer Instinct honestly, which was an obvious combination of SF and MK, with SamSho the comparison is more about using "SF style" motions to do specials and having blood like MK. But it's still completely it's own thing.

I hope you put in a part about Haomaru's secret move in Samurai Showdown 2. I dont know how widely known it was, or if it was included in console versions, but it was definitely in the arcade version. Haomaru does a kind of spinning sword slice uppercut that hits 3 times if you land it right. The secret move does his spinning sword attack about 5 times in a row while crossing the screen. I dont remember it exactly, but it involved 2 half moons, a full 360 degree joystick roll, and the standard quarter joystick roll for projectiles that goes Forward, Down, Diagonal and pressing both attack buttons. (I forget the buttons since the joystick motion was so lengthy)

Great and informative video about the Samurai Shodown Story. And Yeah, not only Nakoruru, also Galford were the first fighting game characters to use animals on fighting. About the mini clasing swords button input, there is the data that says that no matter how many times the players pressed the buttons, the decision of who wins the clash is completely random.

i agree. great review and analysis overall. but AOF in 1992 (the game that actually got me loving fighting games and SNK games in general) was the 1st game that had a second bar (called the spirit bar). SamSho was the 2nd game to have it. it was, however, the 1st fully weapon based fighting game. it also was the 1st to introduce animals in a fighting game.

Yeah I really liked Art of Fighting cause you couldn’t spam and abuse special moves. It made it so you had to channel your chi to do moves and taunting was an actual technique that did something. Like it made the character second guess him/herself by draining the chi bar.

Hi there! Man, oh man. The first Samurai Shodown game..... This brings back so many memories..... I grew up with Street Fighter 2 and Mortal Kombat way back int the day and for the longest time I never thought They could be beaten..... Until I played Samurai Shodown! SNK was gaining momentum and i only played Art of Fighting at that point. But Samsho (as most fans call it)hooked me completely. The vibrant colors, the diverse cast of characters, the awesome soundtrack with traditional japanese sounds and of course, the amazing gameplay, amde this game my most played game in my Sega Megadrive system (Sega Genesis), more than any other game combined. And so my passion for fighting games truly blossomed. While in the Capcom side, the Street Fighter franchise, Alpha 3 and III Second Impact are some of my favourites, in the SNK side, besides The Last Blade and Garou,(wich are amazing by the way) Samurai Shodown will always be my favourite franchise, Especially SS2 and SSV Special. And of course, the very first one because it introduced me to the series. Thank you SNK for bringing back this awesome franchise. Cheers and happy gaming to all.

One of my absolute favorite series of all time, love everything about SS, the character designs, the music, the gameplay, the presentation, etc. After i played SS1 as a kid back in '94 i was hooked, my 8 year old mind was blown away by everything about the game, i even preferred it over SF, which i LOVED at the time (and still do of course). I'm so glad we are getting a new game in the series, SS Sen was a disgrace to the franchise and would have been a terrible way for it to go out. Crazy, i actually have that first Viz graphic novel you showed too, i've had it since like 1999, lol.

The greatest thing about this series, at least the earlier 2D games, is the sound, or more correctly how uncluttered it is. The ambient, sound effects to voice acting works together to make the atmosphere and sets it apart from any other fighting games. Just look up SS3 gameplay, don't even watch but listen to the sound. I actually think the rigid style of animation in the older 2D games lends itself to the theme of game making it more effective too. Making animation too smooth takes away from it. Last Blade arguably had better gameplay, but Samurai Shodown had better style.
