Very Informative.. there is NO doubt that the brutal & fanatic Islamic Mughal rule in India faced stiff resistance at different periods from the great RAJPUT warriors, fierce AHOM warriors from Assam & from Punjab the brave SIKH warriors...India's strength lies in Unity in Diversity. Rightly did the great Hindi Poet Bhushana, who forsook the royal favours of the Mughal court to come over to Shivaji to record his glories, he sang :-“काशी की कला जाती, मथुरा की मसजीद बनती, अगर शिवाजी ना होते तो सबकी सुन्नत होती.” meaning : (Had not there been Shivaji, Kashi would have lost its culture,Mathura would have been turned into a mosque and all would have been circumcised.) If not for Shivaji and the Marathas, there would have existed a continuous Islamic belt from Morocco to Indonesia. What addition of 1 billion more adherents to Islam would have done to the world power balance or what would have happened to Indian legacy like yoga, ayurveda, music, art and philosophy, is not difficult to guess…. It is worthwhile examining the 'what if' of Indias history, Aurengzeb, Akbars great great grandson, had embarked on the 'Islamisation' of India. The Marathas, inspired by Shivaji, fought Aurengzeb and saved India from following the fate of Persia. The proof of Maratha victory lies in the fact that Aurengzeb lies buried, not in Lahore /Delhi or Agra , but near Aurangabad in good old Maharashtra... Indian history before Shivaji's advent reads like a chronicle of military disasters. Shivaji changed all that. He used Guerilla Tactics very effectively. Shivaji, as a great warrior & visionary laid a strong and solid foundation that after his death in 1680, there was a series of battles fought between Marathas and Mughals from 1681 to 1707 known as 'War of 27 years' and ended with the death of Aurangzeb in 1707. The Marathas eventually emerged victorious and consolidated their lost territories. This was further expanded by the Peshwas. The Maratha empire reached its peak in summer of 1758 with the conquest of Attock, which is banks of Indus river in Pakistan today. Its eastern frontier was today’s Orissa, being ruled by Raghuji Bhosale of Nagpur. Maratha armies had also reached upto Murshidabad, but then retreated and settled for tribute from Bengal and control of Orissa. To the south, in 1758, territories upto the fort of Gurramkonda in Kadappah district were held. Also, Tanjore (Thanjavur) was under Marathas, but that was a different line. In 1761, the PANIPAT war was lost to the Afghans but Marathas RECOVERED quickly like phoenix bird within 10 years and brought the whole of North Indian again under their control during the 1770's under leadership of Madhavrao Peshwa.. Eventually, the Marathas grew stronger and fought the British in three Anglo-Maratha Wars (1775-82, 1803-05, 1817-18), In the First Anglo-Maratha War (1775-1782) the Marathas emerged Victorious. A Vijay Stambh (Victory Pillar) erected to commemorate Maratha victory over British is located at Vadgaon/Wadgaon Maval, close to the city of Pune. The 2nd and 3rd were subsequently lost and British established themselves which was followed by the Uprising of 1857 . (By the way, just for your G.K, Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is also considered as the 'Father of the Indian Navy' AND Apart from Jijabai, 2 well known Women personalities emerging from the Maratha empire were Devi AHILYABAI HOLKAR and RANI LAXMIBAI of Jhansi also known as Manikarnika.) I'm a Jat and I owe my respect to Maratha Bravehearts. Lots of respect to Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Peshwa Bajirao. I feel guilty that we Jats didn't fight with our Maratha brothers in the 3rd battle of Panipat. We fought together in defeating Mughals and controlled Delhi but the dispute over control of Delhi divided us and our brave Maratha brothers were defeated without our help. I think we should learn from history and stay united. Had we fought together in Panipat we would have never been subjected to British.

Thanks for this great video Epimethius. For long the British propaganda has claimed that they took India from the mugals and showed it as a blessing to majority Hindus who were oppressed. Thanks to the free media truth is coming out and people can be told that the brits fought 3 wars with a Hindu empire even losing the first. How they betrayed the peace treaty and why the first Maratha war is missing from the British war chronicles is another story :)

My ancestors, they sent us to Southeast Asia (Philippines) at the brink of the Anglo-Maratha wars...for safety...that someday a descendant may still live and redeem the empire. But that's only history, a story that echoes in our family. It doesn't matter anymore today. When the Spanish came, our ancestors had already settled an Indian culture in some of the islands. And according to Spanish census, we were named Marata or Maratas in plural in the registrations bearing Indian origin and ethnicity. Proud of my heritage. It's in my name and will be passed on to our family's next generation.

Polytheistic religions like Hinduism are far more tolerant by nature than Monotheistic ones, so it doesn't surprise me that the Maratha Confederacy was far more concerned with quality of character than religious adherence.

You know, it was actually the fault of both Shah jahan and Aurangzeb for instilling the downfall of the empire. Had shah jahan managed the treasury more carefully and allowed religious tolerance, the revolts wouldn't have started in the first place. And if they hadn't started, then aurangzeb, his son, wouldn't have spent HIS life fighting the rebels, thus depleting the treasury even more, and then India wouldn't have been invaded by Nader shah which was the "nail in the coffin" for the mughal empire. It makes me angry to think that the emperors couldve avoided this downfall by just being more tolerant religiously, yet they didnt. They went against the ideal akbar had set to build the empire, and they paid the price for it.

Marathas won sub continent Muslims respect.. They were bravo... As a Bengali we fought Mughal too... We defeat Akbars army lead by man singh but later his son Jahangir defeat us...

(Also I gotta say it, it's pronounced with more of a hard "t" sound, like "thyme", rather than a soft "th" sound, like in "thought".)

The fact that everyone was treated equally, holds true only for Chhatrapati Shivaji's empire, the later monarchs especially the Peshwa Baji Rao II defied this rule completely. The Baji Rao II established a cruel system based on Brahminical hegemony and torturing a whole group of people and denying them basic rights. Great topic and video though!

The Maratha empire has always been of particular interest because of its swashbuckling history, though I do wish you had used the term South Asia instead of Indian Subcontinent which has recently been gaining popularity. I'd be interested in seeing a video on Vijayanagara since it was another Hindu empire founded during Muslim rule, or the Pala empire which was India's last great Buddhist dynasty
