My grandfather served in the German Navy in WW1 - he was issued the long barrel Navy Luger with the holster/buttstock. He kept it after the war when he emigrated to the U.S. My grandmother made him sell it. What a legacy that would have been to our family!

You guys are the the undisputed dudes of sidearm info. Othias, your attention to the historical minutiae is greatly appreciated and you seem to be attentive to every swerve and kink in the developmental story. Mae, I feel your contribution is sold a wee bit short as I am certain you do more than shoot. However, you shoot splendidly, raise every potential issue and are suitably analytical in doing so. Apologies to Othias, but Mae, you look amazingly gorgeous too.

+Matthew Bozanich Ian has a much better memory than me if you keep in mind he is constantly working from short prep and memory. If he sat down I am sure the product would be similar, but having done this approach for nearly a year now, the learning investment on production is crazy steep and the hours brutal. I think the P08 mud test was a perfect way to show how these two approaches compliment each other.

+Joe Taylor Thanks man. Mae does a lot of heavy lifting off camera and is getting involved in the software side more and more. Right now she is heading up recording some audio for Verdun the game. Jay is the unsung, camera shy hero. He does our hand loading, has located half the pieces we have shown, and knows the filming and audio now. He also stepped up to photographer during our Springfield trip and us the one to catch my mistakes in the field.

A The Great War viewer here. I'm not a shooter or a weapons nerd but guns have a fascinating history of technological development and refinement. In particular I was fascinated with the Luger LP08 so I watched this episode. I was not disappointed and, it appears, neither was Mae. I thought Othais's "Gott mit Uns" t-shirt said "Gott mit Guns" which I think would be an awesome t-shirt. Merchandise idea, guys? p.s. Mae's reaction to shooting the German anti-tank rifle was also priceless.

Twice the Mae is always welcome. Mae's "minute of man" groups with both mags show the Long Lugers ability to provide a serious defensive punch if needed. Freehand is the worst case for a defensive weapon. With any kind of a rest, the weapon would be more controllable. I wonder what impact that narrow stock passed on to the shooter.

Regarding the rear sight cut on all post-1916 P08 receivers: Erfurt manufactured the P08 repair/replacement parts for the Imperial army. The sight cut was applied to all receivers to make producing a separate inventory of LP08 receivers unnecessary--same as the idea for the universal P08 stock lug.

Another great episode. 24 episodes down... 126-ish left to go in WWI? Got the journal entry on the book, look forward to it. I picture this massive tome when the book is done, Othais hunched over furiously scribbling notes, maybe done in parchment with calligraphy and monks furiously copying pages in the background. But seriously your gonna have to split it up somehow, like a set of encyclopedias, maybe by weapon type (pistols/rifles/LMG/HMG) or by combatant nation. If you start taking deposits on the book let us know! Also if you choose to re-release any of the old posters Id be interested.

The bend on the trommel magazine looks like it would cause feeding issues, I definitely now need to look into a cut away to see how that works. And to think I was thinking about getting sleep. Thanks again guys. Great video.

And while Lowe became DWM, Still not too broken up over that guy who caused the name change to be hit by a car. Also, I believe the A20 German tank weighed less than a Reichsrevolver. Still love that "What is this, I don't want to talk about it" from that episode.

Loewe did not become DWM and the owner was not hit by a car. DWM was a subsidiary of Loewe. The brother of Isidor Loewe, Sigmund, who was a manager at Vickers, sons & Maxim in the UK was an avid car enthusiast and crashed his car, killing himself.

@Vlimable
@Vlimable 6 жыл бұрын
planescaped basically you had 3 players: thin guy with glasses and no facial hair is Ludwig, founder, died young. Moustache and no beard: Isidor. He took over when Ludwig died. The guy with the beard was Sigmund. He ended up with Vickers through the Maxim/Nordenfeld merger. Sigmund was an early car enthusiast and got himself killed. Sigmund has a seat on the Loewe advisory board, which was taken over by Albert Vickers after the fatal accident.

31:23 It seems like the stock is funneling Mae's voice really well into her mic, so she sounds a lot louder suddenly. Some voice equalization would have been good there. 33:32 To be fair, the physical dimensions of WWI German troops were probably closer to Mae's. The only problem with that drum mag would be that I have a hard time seeing how it would be easily carried. IMO, that's something I think would be nice to have seen and is worth considering in future episodes, i.e., how comfortable the spare mags are to carry.

" . . . Magnetos . . ." Hehehe Loved the symbol. And, it looked to me as though the Snail Magazine reduced flip, when Mae was shooting. Is that correct? NVM, you answered it near the end.

I love the design of the Luger. I believe it is one of the most heavily influential pistols of its time. I own one of them I do not believe it is a Marine Luger. thanks for reminding me I have it. I'm going to have some fun :-)

Very nice video! I relly like your content and find it verry interesting. Thanks for making all of these episodes in such a high quality. I just have one question: I live in Germany and a friend of mine found such a pistol only with a shorter barrel and without the stock or holster (since he found it in the woods and its probably rotten by now). On the top it also says "Erfurt" but I'm not quite sure if its from the time-period of the first or the second worldwar. The date on top is really hard to see. I just wanted to ask weither you guys know if it was produced in the II. WW or not, or where I coould find such intel. I've read on wikipedie (yeah I know its not such a good source) that Erfurt prety much had to stop producing 9mm guns after the end of the I. WW and pretty much only produced rifles in the II. WW. It would be really great if you guys could help me out on this;) (and also it semmes to be loaded, is it dangerous to store it in a drawer or something like that? I know it's not smart to hit it with a hammer, but I have pretty much no expirience with real guns and how dangerous such old things are)

pretty impressive that germany produced a reliable drum magazine in wwI, considering the number of fails of more recent attempts of making drum fed dirt shooters. lol.

I have a bizarre blank chamber DWM p08 that has the sight notch in the slide, Imperial era commercial acceptance mark, the Mauser rework(1930-33) mark, the Simpson/Mauser rework(1926-33) mark, and the gun and magazine are both serialized “M81”. It’s the only Luger I have ever seen with all of these features combined. Any idea what this might be?
