@Deanimator Well, I suppose the Norwegian M1914 Pattern of Brother Browning’s big pistol will do for a strictly Norwegian pairing. That extended slide-release lever does visually match the prominent magazine cut-off lever on the early Norwegian Krag-Jorgenson Rifles. The U.S. 1911 pattern pistol will, of course, be reserved for pairing with a Winchester 1895 rifle: the 1911 / 1895 pairing would produce the proper Browning Steam-punk exposable slides, sliding-bolts, moving pivots, links, levers & locking block contraptions set ;-)

@@masonhaggerty186 you find them every so often, rarely on Gunbroker, more commonly on auction sites where they fetch a pretty penny. I don't see them going on auction for less than $1,200.00 these days.

Going to guess that it might have been used by our homeguard( heimevernet), seeing as my dad carried a mp40 until mid 90s( one other officer had a issued luger as a sidearm), aswell as youth homeguard here having 98k's

Not at all an unreasonable guess. I'm pretty sure the main reason to have a nice bolt action, smooth shooting, gun with iffy reloading in the 80's was sport, the second was to shoot polar bears. I can absolutely see the Coast Guard having a Krag or two on board and resisting any attempt at modernizing their guns. They want to have the same old guns that are nice to shoot targets with, they don't want or need a fighting gun, depsite what their superiors think. It's why I shot more a break action shotgun (skeet) than my hk416 or mp5 (the actual military guns) when I was in the Coast Guard.

Most probably for competition shooting. A lot of Krag Jørgensen actions was rebuilt with new stock, heavy barrels and diopter sights. Until the STR arrived in around 1990, it was the most popular rifle for competition shooting in Norway.

Its amazing the amount of obscure and rare guns that this channel tracks down especially unmolested ones that are over a hundred years old by this point,its a testament to their hard work and having mark to work on them is added incentive not many channels have such a dedicated gunsmith and mae gets beat up by some old boy guns and othais is such a deep diver

There's some very important but subtle differences on the 1912 action in addittion to increased diameter. They learned a bit from the Steyr ones and rounded some internal corners around the ejection port etc, where the 1894 pattern had sharp corners that act as stress risers. A '94 will eventually develop metal fatigue and crack, though it can take many tens of thousands of rounds to get there. The 1912 action is pretty much immortal and doesn't wear out in that manner.

The wet ammo accuracy problem was mostly affecting the Bull barrel sporter rifles with free floating barrels. The original thin barreled versions with barrel bands were not very affected.

I had a teacher who happened to bump into a German in a cafe in Berlin in the 70s, he was stationed in Norway during the war "Norwegians, they are excellent marksmen".

I just want to thank you for this magnificent contet 😊 to me the best contet of your show this far has been this comprehensive and thorough series of krag rifle family, the meny times completely forgotten work horses and in there lies to me the heart of your show. There is thousands of informative and less informative videos abaut lee enfields but there is non in english abaut nordik krags or Romanian mannlichers or meny other forgotten or underrated rifles and rifle familys which you have covered. You guys are true saints for preserving and sharing this history keep up the good work 🤗

The Krags in South Africa are known to be favoured by the Boer officers, interestingly enough. Interesting that some of the rifles may have been produced in Norway, the usual story is always that they were made from spare parts at Steyr, about a hundred in total. Looking into the e small arms of the Second Boer war is quite fascinating, a real mishmash. It would perhaps be a suitable special episode after Primer ends?

This video is fantastic! I do have a slight correction though. The picture shown of "Jan Smutts" is actually a picture of his brother General Tobias Smutts, who was 9 years older than him. Some sources have claimed this is Jan, but once comparing other photos of Tobias to those two famous photos of him with the krag, as well as reading Karl E Haneviks writings on the subject, as well as "Small Arms of the Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902" by Ron Bester, it seems like it truly is Tobias rather than Jan. It is likely that Jan did also use the Krag though, as some other higher ranked officers did.

I must say it leaves a major what if in my mind, had prevailing minds at Springfield armory had asked for a redesign of the Krag instead of a copy of the Mauser. As in if they had added another locking lug, and if they had still gone with a universal short rifle, if they had converted over 30-40 to a rimless cartridge, and if they had gone ahead with making a stripper clip for the Krag. I love my 1903, but it still would’ve been an interesting what if.

Thats the question on my mind too. Or rather, the questions. I STILL can't see why they couldn't have changed the door to allow use of a stripper clip. Even if it meant changing it to forward opening instead of downward, then putting a stripper clip guide on the reciever.

To keep up with the Krag theme, you should do an episode on how the Krag influenced the Aggro-Krag from Nickelodeon's Guts back in the 90s. Although one is a firearm and the other is...a fake rock, I feel that there could be something there. Put Crozier on it...or the range goat

The M1912 carbine has got to be one of the most beautiful, elegant, and quirky rifles ever made. I bought a barreled action and a half-finished stock to try to put one together from parts years ago, but it's been sitting in a family member's safe ever since and I just haven't got the time to work on Frankensteining it together. I think about it often, though.

with a krag you always have a couple of cartridge handy for lucy loading, during a lull in combat you can top off the mag, so it always has 5 rounds ready.

An about 500 meter battle sight is also on the Springfield 03. My guess it was designed in case of a cavallery charge. Large targets coming at you at full speed.

Last summer 2020, I picked up a 1918 Krag-Jorgensen Karabiner. The serial numbers indicate it is a 1918. The fact the bold has a different serial number, and a round bolt handle indicates, according to your information, this was retro-fitted. Your info that this model is "heftier" is appreciated, so I don't need to be concerned about using modern ammunition. Thanks.
