Like bailing someone out of prison free people of color bought enslaved people of color (often family members) from their white masters. Free people of color did not abuse their "slaves". If you just bought your cousins out of slavery and colonial enforcers show up to your yard are you going to make it obvious or would you say by law they're your slaves so they wont be separated from you legally.
