yeah, while I don't blame a large company for avoiding a subject just because it's slightly controversial it makes me sad I don't get these videos recommended, I love this show. Notifications are a suitable alternative though if you need one.

@@litllisa1 YT is also more on short videos recently so when the normal C&R video clocks over 1 hour that tends to reduce exposure. I love the fact that the ones behind this channel are dedicated to producing the quality content so am very happy with the long form videos.

I remember my father telling me stories of his time in the Austrian army in the 80s where they used Balistol as a salad dressing since the army food was so bland.

The Japanese definitely says modication one (i kai). I don't know any Japanese names that would have kai in it, and Kai is commonly used to denote model modifications in military equipment. Funnily enough you see it a lot in mecha anime

I refuse to believe you can cover the Martini in only 6 episodes. You haven't even scratched the carbines yet, much less the failed EM that went on to be reworked as the 3 flavors of MK IVs, the variety of carbines, the new made MM in .303, the conversions of carbines and rifles to .303 or 7.65, the manufacture by Kabul, plus all the great tales of how so many of these made it into the US. But you certainly have made a good start!

I think these were used by Peru in the War of the Pacific against Chile, let me confirm that. PS.: Lol, you do mention it in the video, apologies for doubting! 😂 Some of the weapons captured from the Peruvians had Turkish characters on the rear sight.

Another awesome episode 🎉 Sultan Abdulhamid’s Toughra (pronounced “too - ruh”) is different pre-post Russo Turkish War… By the way, even the Toughra experts have a hard time deciphering them, if they are a bit worn out, and not fully visible

What makes them particularly difficult to learn is that most of the examples shown online are from calligraphy, not stamps in metal. A very good source for Ottoman tuğra in metal objects is "Ottoman Silver Marks" by Garo Kürkman. It is a book for silver items, but they show the "smudgy" way that they appear and is a great identification guide.

Pleven is one of the loveliest Bulgarian towns. If you ever happen to be there, pay a visit to the Panorama of Pleven - a museum dedicated to the battle. It's absolutely epic, although not really big. Has many really cool guns from the era, too

Balistol is awesome stuff, I first learned about it and used it when training with the German Army. They used it for everything, including scratches, hangovers and constipation. Some even drank a shot every morning, to in his words "To keep everything running smoothly". I can confirm that drinking it doesn't hurt you, as I have drank it and it does keep things running smoothly while on a steady diet of MRE's😂

The Ottoman Empire was caught up in a lot of regional and internal wars and instability during that time and therefore debts and payment delays were inevitable.

The Ottomans used quite a few Martini rifles and carbines during the fighting in the middle east in ww1 alongside their Mausers.

Glad to see you guys are still around, retired and have made restoring old shotguns my bag. But I've started C&R rifles too. Your info is very helpful in selection of rifles. When somebody talking about Martini Henry rifles, everybody will talk about the Zulus. But a lot of them didn't know that (Peabody) Martini-Henry was also the standard issue rifles of the Ottoman Empire and used during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878.

49:00 The Japanese often used "Modification (Mod.)" like a western country would use "Mark (Mk.)". A weapon or system would be named "Type XX Mod. N" with XX being the year on the calendar and N being the version number. Ex: Type 95 Mod. 1 I don't know if the Mod. number stared at zero or 1 however.

1:03:10 -- RE: Mae can't tell Left from Right; Self-deprecating humor appreciated, but hey, moments ago Mae also showed her awareness of what would be visible in frame of a cut-away close-up camera before stopping the video shoot and consulting it. Therefore, I suspect that explains some of the left-right confusion, since the Audience / Viewer is clearly of concern to Mae. o7 and TYVM C&Rsenal for another fantastic video!

the price you quote of 63 shillings is that english shillings if it is this equates to £3 -3shillings or in victorian terms 3 guineas

Before ~1970, The British had 12 pence to a shilling, and 20 shillings (aka "a bob") to a pound. But just when you were confused about those units, they had a guinea = 21 shillings (1 pound, 1 shilling). What's that all about ? Were they selling something for a pound, that also incurred a 1 shilling tax ?

@@michaelmoorrees3585 a Guinea was a gold coin in use up until 1816 originally worth a pound but price of gold went up so gov fixed value at 21shillings when it was dropped as a coin it carried on being used as acommon term even today especially in the world of horse racing ( still a race called the 2 thousand guineas) and I believe that at race horse auctions the prices where in guineas until very recently

regarding the "Meji 13th year type, mod. 1" marking my thinking is a bit conjectural and reposes on logic found both outside the realm of small arms and the timeframe of those guns but japanese military navy aircraft when adopted, the first pattern would be adopted marked as "type XX (fighter/bomber/danger kite) model 1" with subsequent modifications numbered sequentially, or likewise for the army planes, the first adopted variant would be Ki-XX-I, then Ki-XX-II and so on

The Martini (.577/450 Martini-Henry Volunteer rifle) among others (.275 Rigby etc) is a famous rifle in India as it was used by Jim Corbett to hunt man eating tigers from 1900s - 1930s. He always stated it to be sure-shot rifle and good to use in dark conditions heavy enough for a tiger. Didnt know about its US origins - always assumed it to be a British one.

A gread video! Now I have a question. You mention needing to use strange force to get the case around the extractor to jam it up. But there are reports of this happening in British service due to their rolled brass cases crumpling. Now, obviously thats British, not Ottoman, but what did the ottomans use for brass? Did they use the solid brass cases peapody made?
