In the early 80's I and my US Navy Reserve P3 Orion crew deployed to Guam for our two week deployment. While there we got to fly a MAP or maritime air patrol of the eastern Caroline Islands. That included Truk. I got many aerial photos of the sunken merchant ships that are not too deep. You can still see the forward mast of the San Francisco Maru. What a place to scuba dive.

I think you may be mistaken. The entrances to the Atol were mined. Some of the ones that were used had shore controls to deactivate the mines. There was one freighter that didn't know better and used one of the non approved passes and hit a mine and was sunk there but it was not a pass they used and before the attacks.

Japanese ships Yamamoto and Mishashi left the Truk lagoon prior to the assault. Today Truk aka Chuuk is literally liter with WWII remnants plus oil leaking from these sunken ships. Japanese airfields on Weno, Tonowas, Etten and Parem were destroyed during this air attack.

Was it planned to let the Japanese use a lot of resources to rebuild Truk after the first attack, and then go back to destroy it more? This is a good example of attrition as Japan had limited resources at this time. Thank you for the accurate simulation.

Why was Japan shocked by two defeats at Truk Atoll? There were no fighter aircraft to defend the island, and the warships are easy targets for attack planes. After the Battle of Midway Japan couldn't replace the pilots they lost.

Unfortunately, the wrecks are decaying rapidly. Amazing to see all the Sachi Bottles in the hold of one large ship, and the massive 18 inch shells for the Yamamoto Battleship.

Anyone notice every time the Japanese got a real bloody nose, a real lasting setback they could not recover from Ray Spruance had a hand in it ? Midway, Philipine Sea, masterminded Truk with Mitscher , Tarawa, Saipan, Tinan, most under rated admiral in the theater...luckily not by Nimitz, but Nimitz didn't play games, Spruance got results.. without sinking fleets in Typhoons, or chasing empty Carriers..

There are a number of independent sources, such as Jacques Cousteau, that have verified the large number of ships sunk in Chuuk Lagoon. The best guess is that the first attack put about 50 ships on the bottom. A smaller number with the second attack. There are also guided dives which is now a major business in Chuuk (Truk). All of the ships have not been positively identified. There was a major effort to retrieve the bodies when Jacques Cousteau revealed that the ships were still full of remains back in the 60's. There were 18 ships sunk at Pearl Harbor, however it could be argued that the large battleships sunk during that earlier attack were more critical for the time.

Wouldn't it have been more effective to use the littoral ship's (battleships, destroyers, etc.) heavy guns to pound the islands before sending in the bombers and attack aircraft? Certainly would have reduced AA fire and enemy fighter aircraft. The attol was a natural "trap" for the ships so zeroing the big guns rather easy. Might have saved many more pilots and sailors.

@@kbanghart If you are referring to Iwo Jima and other islands yes. This is an attol (ring of land with protected harbor). The ships in the harbor cannot hunker down nor could they escape easily thus the destruction from air attack. Littoral ships could have lobbed tons of ordinance into the harbor striking the ships and shore batteries.
