Today we're going to review how to hit a killer Z-Serve. A Z-Serve is great for when your struggling with your first serve, drive-serve. If you're hitting a lot of short balls, it's easier to hit this ball because you're going to hit it high and you're going to put some pace on the ball. That will get you into a rhythm of serving. If you hit this ball right, most club players will have a hard time returning this serve.
If you're right-handed, then that means you're going to hit the Z-Serve to the left side (to your opponent's backhand). You'll want to position yourself with your heel right inside the Drive/Serve line. Take two steps and you'll hit the ball.
Depending on the amount of slice, your power and your particular swing, you're going to hit the ball anywhere from about 1' to about 2" - 3" out of the corner. The ball will hit the front wall, hit the side wall, travel through the center of the court, hit between 1 to 2 feet of the back wall and slide down, which will make it extremely tough to hit.
Just as important as executing the right angle with this serve is to move properly to make sure you're safe. When you hit the ball, you'll want your follow-thru to completely turn you around. You'll turn, roll and watch the ball bounce just over your left shoulder. You'll slide into center court and be ready.
If you're playing somebody and you're concerned about their control, be sure to look through your racquet to protect your face. This will keep you safe whenever you may be in danger on the court.

I wish these r'ball videos would show the result of the bounce in the back corner. It's hard to judge your efficiency without knowing what a good result looks like.

Good tips on the footwork getting out of the box! It's important to turn your head back as soon as possible after this serve to watch your opponent, insuring your not blocking his shot. If the ball rebounds too much off the back-wall, your opponent might have an offensive opportunity and you don't want to commit a penalty hinder by blocking his 'straight-in shot' or 'cross-court shot.'

I tried this Z-Serve but I didn't do so well with it, so I am watching you again so that I can try it again on tomorrow morning 11-5-2020. Thank you for sharing the knowledge.

Hi Aaron - I'm not trying to down play the power of a nice hard-z - just pointing out that if you simply move over a few inches to the right you can be more deception to your receiver - a wonderful example of this is Kane - 3 serves from same starting position - drive left/right corners, hard-z Remember - Feedback is the breakfast of champions. Crazy, now this serve is used soon much in pro play and low A and up. In theory cut it off, pass, blah blah, a good z serve you, loom at today's game. Ppl hit this serve to Kanes forehand. And its effective. They may not win the maxmtch but Parilla, ms, used this serve on kane and he pulled it off? So goes to say, it can work

Mostly good video. Really wish you would have shown where it comes off the back wall and where it ends up in relation to the left wall.

Returning the serve shown in this video, I tend to call a let, since if I were to take the ball in the air beyond the dotted line, the server appears to be directly in front of the returner. Often on this serve, I will catch the ball to show the server that he/she is directly in front of me for a volley return. For the Z server, I start the motion a step more to the right, so when the ball crosses mid-court I am further out of the way.

Hey Aaron - you need to keep your right foot OFF the 3-foot drive serve line (2:26 mark) otherwise if I was playing you I know the Z is coming or to the right corner, which makes it super easy to return - because you can't serve to the left corner- it is a violation, Rule 3.6 Drive Service Zones - hope that helps and good luck with your game

This is one of the easiest serves to attack. Hit the ball before it bounces and you catch the server flat-footed. The only way a z-serve can be effective is to hit the ball low and have it bounce well in front of the receiver.

The problem is that a weak player will just step up and volley it to the ceiling and put the server in the back court whereas a strong player will volley it into a kill or a down the wall pass.

rocky carson does it in his games, and you'll see a better execution. Other pro players do it too, its easy to attack if hit to deep like he did it, but when you see a pro player do it, most of the times its better to do a defensive shot, depending on how the angle it comes at the receiver and the speed.

The success rate of the z serve, whether medium or hard, is very low because at the end of the day it is a setup. Even for Kane it is not a good serve. The solution is always straight in drive to the backhand or forehand. People never learn this lesson though. They always go back to a weaker serve.

Parture , I agree in principle that this serve is a set up. However, I usually introduce it early in the game to gauge my opponent. If he, in turn, sets me up, then I know this serve troubles him. I don't repeat it too often as to not give him time to "settle" or work it out, but I bring it back from time to time until he no longer sets me up. I might get a few points out it.
@Parture

Well....4 years late, built Kane did lose to a this year to a guy who used this serve to his forehand....??? And that player is 4 atm I think. A good z serve won't be a set up. Even if you cut it off. You have to hit it near perfect and judging from today's game even at low A to pro. This serve is used as much as a drive serve. Soooo

@@pokemonalt5108 The highest success rate serve against Kane is DB, DF first serve, and 2nd serve HBZ lob. That's all.
@pokemonalt5108
@pokemonalt5108 2 жыл бұрын
@@Parture that's all fine, and we can say that about any pro player or the majority of players but I'm just saying a z serve is still a good effective serve.

I disagree with this technique. Z serve is best serving from the wall. Yes serving from the center (center ish) gives you a good position but the ball comes off the back wall. Any 1/2 way decent player is gonna kill it, side out. Put your butt up against the wall and slam it in the corner. Where it hits the floor is the point where it will go parallel to the back wall. NEVER hitting the back wall. Corner. Floor. Side wall. Parallel to back wall. Never hits back wall. Point. 2nd you can ease up on the power and it will hit the back wall but doing weird things and dying in the corner. The only thing this video shows is how to effectively guarantee side out.
@LawrenceDuffy477

As long as it comes off the back wall it's side out.

yall ever watch rocky carson, or other pro players in match use this serve? grant it, they are pros, but practice it enough, and you can get it similar to that. Lots of open players use this serve too and its very effective, and safe, and 95 percent of the time, you get a set up from it.
