Brazilian international Richarlison caused a bit of a stir in the Premier League at Nottingham Forest last weekend, when he showboated with Tottenham winning 2-0, by juggling the ball a few times in the 85th minute.
The ensuing furore from certain sections of the English media, pundits, and fans has been overwhelming, with some claiming that Richarlison should have been carded, not Brennan Johnson, or even that he deserved to get seriously injured.
In this video, HITC Sevens analyses that visceral reaction, what it says about British football culture, and the British / English psyche in general.

I'm amazed that three keepy-ups is even being viewed as "showboating" - even I can knock out three keepy-ups. If he'd done fifty-three keepy-ups using every part of his body that'd be disrespectful... unsportsmanlike, but three - is that really taking the piss out of your opponents?

It is. Keepy-ups are a fairly useless piece of skill without much of a pratical use in an actual match. You have to take into account the adrenaline and the fatigue as well. When you are 2 goals down with less than 10 minutes go many players will get easily rattled by the most minor of things. It's only natural. Richarlison knew that and used it to his advantage. Nothing wrong that, of course. It's perfectly within the laws of the game and the fans love to see it.

@@shipu302 if it was just the players on the pitch that took offence it would be understandable but the reaction from some fans and pundits is just pathetic, it was 3 kick ups and what makes it even more pathetic is that richarlison is a well known wind up merchant, idk how people don't expect this from him

I think it's that it doesn't seem in any way necessary or helpful to his team for him to do it in the clip that most have seen of it and so it came across as taking the piss to a lot of people. This. At least we get to see something interesting. I seriously dislike time wasting in general, no matter how you do it. As a youth coach I always forbid it because I don't want my team to win that way. We need to play football for 60-90 minutes (depending on the age of the kids) no for 45 minutes and some glory runs around the field. We were doing it for fun, and respecting your opponent goes a long way in the youth leagues. But the difference is: I was a youth coach for a 8th league team, if we lose we are sad for a day or two. When Tottenham (all professional Clubs) loses there are contracts, advertising and a boatload of money involved. Not really what you want to lose out on. They are doing it. because it's their job where their performance + result matters, alot.

You actually made a video on Richarlison's juggling and talked about how it relates to Margaret Thatcher's influence on changing English culture. That is genuinely amazing. Never change Alfie, never change. On a serious note, I completely understand where Johnson was coming from. He was frustrated and took it out on an opponent who showboated. I did it when I was a kid as a defender, it was dumb, and I regret it. I don't think his act is necessarily even uncommon. But I do think it shouldn't be celebrated. He should be told he needs to keep his head straight and play with professionalism and pride. The thing that really infuriates me is that this is the exact opposite response everyone had a couple weeks ago when Darwin Nunez put his head through Joachim Andersen. Essentially the same thing happened: A young and inexperienced player got riled up by teasing or purposeful aggravation by an opposing player, and he lashed out in a stupid way. One saw red, the other yellow. Everyone was condemning and criticizing Nunez for his actions, but now everyone wants to defend Johnson for his. All because Richarlison did a few keepy-uppies. If you cannot stop a player within the rules of the game from dribbling, then its your fault. You are not a good enough player, and your team isnt good enough. To then create a false narrative that in a competitive sports match that using learned skills like dribbling is disrespectful....just beyond the pale. The fact is, if a player waste time dribbling because they have a lead, its because the opposition are getting beaten by a superior opponent or tactic. If they need to break rules, fouling players that do that, then they just show how crap they are as a player and how poor the team spirit it. I agree with Alfie on this, but I disagree with his way of describing the incident referring to Richarlison's showboating as 'doing keepy-uppies' and to Johnson's tackle as 'kicking someone down'. Both of those actions need to be seen in the context of a football match. While Johnson was technically 'kicking someone down' it was still just a tackle, one of the most common occurances in football, whilst juggling the ball in the middle of a game is very much not a common occurrance, and is pretty much objectively seen as a way of humiliating your opponent. Still, I don't think Richarlison did anything wrong, and I agree that 'showboating' is a natural part of the game and adds to entertainment value. I also don't think Johnson did anything particularly wrong by performing what I would describe as a 'hard challenge' on Richarlison.

@@athosgomesfonseca Well, i'm not Brazilian, i'm German, not sure why that matters though. Not only do i not mind "a trick or two", i enjoy it. Players like Rene Higuita are true entertainers. And that's the whole purpose of watching football: to be entertained. Not everything needs to be directly going towards the final score on the board. When Mario Balotelli kicked Germany out of the Euros a few years back, i did not mind his meme celebration, in fact i took it as consolation, that at least something funny came from that loss. People need to get that stick out of their ass, football is supposed to be fun. So it is not only not silly, it is actually better than not making a "trick or two". Of course football can be tremendously entertaining without any tricks or showboating or something alike, but i would argue it doesn't hurt anyone, and certainly doesn't lower the entertainment value for the viewers.
