This video is the second of three where I am building the cockpit of the new HKM A-20G this time using the Eduard PE cockpit set. The third and final cockpit build will be using the Airscale Cockpit set and seatbelts from HGW/ASK

Nigel, I think the green colored background paper is a definite improvement from the perspective of the camera operation. The focus appears to be sharper (or perhaps I'm imagining things), and the gray plastic parts show up clearly (good contrast).

looking good as usual Nigel background card seems better and thanks.

Amazing build the control panel is awesome. The background is good not so busy with all the lines from the cutting mat, seems to have a good contrast between that and your hands too. Thanks for the video 😁👍👍👍

Hello to Jess and yourself. The green card seems to work well. It’s Matt enough to absorb the glare from your lights and provides a nice contrast, with no lines from a mat to make the background to fussy. Thanks for another great video. I’m leaning towards the best bits of each 3 but using the Airscale parts as the basis to build on. I’ve found a old photo that shows the instrument panel lined up with a canopy frame to see exactly where it sat. I just need to check I can identify which frame. If I recall it’s a change in size where a frame on the bottom layer is dropped on the next up. I’ll see what it does when I can reach the kit. Thanks again roll on part 3

hello Nigel... this video is going to be a big help for me when i start doing my PE cockpits... so all you do is sand the PE parts to accept paint .. you don't use any etching solutions... now i know why i loose some parts...it's the tweezers i'm using... lots of great info in this video.. thx 4 sharing...vinny... aka... Use an etch primer for what it's worth. De greasing is important too.

I find the "kit version" to be more appealing

The background works for me. It may need changing with a different coloured plastic, but for that light gray it gives enough contrast without being too contrasty.

Hi Nigel, Great video 👍 Really enjoying the info in these 'detail up' videos and looking forward to part 3... I think the light green paper background works great, much better contrast with the kit parts both when grey and painted. The camera seems to have a much better time focusing and seems to do it faster, especially when you are bringing small items closer to the camera, though that could just be a function of the improved contrast. It was also much better after about minute 52 when there was not a bit of the darker green cutting mat showing on the right hand side of the screen and the whole background of the field of view was the light green paper, I guess you had zoomed in a bit for the photo etch section, before this the darker green stripe on the right seemed to be coming in and out of focus with the camera on occasion. Also not sure what might happen if you added stickers back on the top of the paper! Not sure if you may or may not be planning to do this but if they were there it might cause the camera to try and focus on them and not the work in hand!... Clearly without the stickers in view any promotional aspect of the video becomes diminished but how this compares to the better overall viewing experience is down to your call.. Overall a definite improvement over the plain darker green mats and seemed to be better than the light grey mats especially when the lines / boxes are showing..

Nigel you should have made a mold of each part. Then you could really see the difference of each build. I use the ultimate sanding sticks…… I love them.

Like building the cockpit three times isn't enough work already lol!

Ahh the cockpit colour argument. Depends in which factory it was built, did they mix the paint there or was it mixed by a sub-contractor, what year was the aircraft built. All these and many exciting questions will have multiple answers. So it's up to you. Generally for US aircraft of WWII I use Mr Hobby H58 and I either add a bit of yellow, or a bit of black to give a bit of variation.

The background is perfect! 👍 Could you post a 3-image side by side after the Airscale cockpit? That would be super! 😊 Comparing the 3 versions would be easier 👍👍👍

Nice detail. I do like the green colour of papper/mat as it seems to make things brighter or clearer

Love your new background, it is ace, Nige. I am always intrigued by debates about "correct" colours. Is there an official standard sample for comparison? If so, no argument, if not you can only pick your choice of shade/manufacturer and use it across all your builds. If you search Scalemates paint section for interior green you'll get 8 results, no two alike. And, if it bothers you, there is the interesting question of scale effect. A Lanc, Halifax and Stirling in three different dark earths and dark greens will offend the eye more than one consistent scheme.

I presume/hope you are laughing at my original comment before the edit😂
@NigelsModellingBench9 ай бұрын
I am laughing at the comment overall John.. it's so true!! I cannot believe there is debate about "correct" colours. We were at war, who would have cared about accurate colours of a cockpit? AND, like you say.. all the manufacturers claim to have the correct shade and they're all different?

I'm left scratching my head a bit about cockpit colour. In Bill Wolf's book, he says (p271) that "The cockpit was lined with a noise-reducing, flame-proof, cloth covered green "Spepak" or kapok felt "Resistohyde". The cockpit floor was covered with flame-proof green carpet". I can't see much evidence of either in the restored aircraft pics, but on the original b&w pic of the pilot engine controls (p279) you can definitley see a quilted cloth finish to the back panel behind the pilot's seat. So I'm a bit sceptical about those restored aircraft pics as references (which might cast further doubt on the placard colours). Leaves me stuck on the colour for the quilting, but I seem to remember seeing pics of something similar in some bigger American bombers, so maybe some of the B-17 enthusiast might have more of a clue? No idea about the carpet though - I've never heard of that before.

Oh dear… the plot thickens!! There are period pics with no insulation??
@AndyMac539 ай бұрын
@@NigelsModellingBench I've not found too many period shots that show the rear cockpit bulkhead shots very clearly - a difficult shot to get without falling off the nose, I can imagine! Those in Bill's book all seem to be 'instructional' shots that I can imagine would possible leave the quilting out for clarity. There's a contemporary 'Handling Characteristics' KZfaq vid of an A-20c that also show's glimpses of quilting behind the pilot. I've found a couple of carpet reference shots now too - they seem to look just like clip-in, removable car mats sitting either side of the column up to the rudder pedals.
@eddywells56892 ай бұрын
Have you seen in KZfaq a highly detailed b17 build with parts only coming out once per year ???!!

Yeah, it seems there are black, white and red placards of differing shapes??

Loving the background . It’s RAF interior grey/ green or possible Interior grey/ green IJN?….
@NigelsModellingBench9 ай бұрын
Not on this one. It's a US colour, much greener than RAF Grey/Green.
@patrickmil299 ай бұрын
Hi Nigel! I could be completely wrong, but when I searched on the cockpit, the only pics w/ a white placard were on a subtitled pic of "A-20 in Soviet service" and a couple of others on Russian websites. Possibly the white placard is for a Soviet version and red placards were standard for the US versions?
