Need to book a hotel for Saigon, (Ho Chi Minh City), or anywhere else? Using this link to book your hotel with Agoda will give you the same great price and help us out with a small commission:www.agoda.com/partners/partne...
These aren't all of the things you should know before you visit Ho Chi Minh City or Saigon, Vietnam but it's a start. It also allows me to start this series on Vietnam's largest city! This is an incredibly fascinating city and when you visit your are really watching the process of a rapidly expanding, modernizing city. For now there's still lots of traditional and local neighborhoods that feel like the real Vietnam. I hope have a chance to visit these places as well as seeing all of the famous sites.
For Yellow bus 109 here's the link with all of the stops:en.sats.com.vn/tan-son-nhat-ai... . There's also a Yellow bus 119 that will take you to the bus station where you can move on to Can Tho and the Western provinces.
I personally use Grab and the GoViet apps for motorbike taxis around the city. If you want to be picked up at the airport by one of them you'll need to walk outside of the domestic terminal area where the motorbikes have to stop.
I hope you find these tips helpful. Please let me know what else you'd like to learn about Ho Chi Minh City.I plan on doing lots of videos on food, finding vegetarian and vegan food, good coffee, local producst and more! Don't forget to subscribe to my audio podcast:itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/f...

Another great one John! Looks like you are having fun. Heading for life as an expat Sept., 27. DaNang bound. Must say I'm kinda freaking out a bit. I think it's the initial stuff like setting up your phone etc., but I think I'll hotel it for a week or so and have the hotel pick me up. I'm not the most tech savvy lol.

Thanks for sharing your video. Excellent quality video. I found the note about not crossing in front of oncoming buses very useful. Another tip is to only bring U.S. dollars in mint condition for exchange at the money changers. Stick to 20s and 100s that are as new as possible with no tears or writing or other imperfections.

Thanks very much! Thanks for sharing your tip on U.S. currency! I usually only carry enough to pay the stamping fee for my visa but I always make sure the bills are clean and in good shape. They may not be as picky as other countries but it’s quite possible bills will get rejected if they have a tear. You’re right, better to be safe and carry clean bills that are in good shape.

Hi John, I am so happy and glad that you are responding to your viewers. Lots of vloggers that I have encountered on KZfaq wants you to subscribe and make comments but they never make time to response to their viewers. Anyway, I was in Vietnam 3 or 4 years ago, and I wished I knew about the travel/food vloggers on KZfaq. I was staying in District 1 but I didn't see any public transportation along that street. I have to walk all over the place and this tired me out when I finally reached my place of destination. Also, because of my inability to speak Vietnamese, though I am always mistaken as one, I hated being scammed or overpriced whenever I go to the market, sidewalk vendors. Also, staying there at a guesthouse or hotel, the people working there can't recommend a good place to eat except the places around where they live. They are ill equipped of infos necessary to a tourist or a guest. So thank God for people like you. Thank you again John.

Thank you so much for your very kind and thoughtful words! I hope that one day you can return to Vietnam and have a completely different and enjoyable experience. It truly is an exciting and interesting place to visit and with a little knowledge you can avoid some of it’s pitfalls in the future!🙏🙏🙏

Great video. How’s the humidity this time of year? I’ve only been through in October. Two side notes about money exchange. If your flight out of HCM is early AM there is no money exchanger open until 7am as of last time I was there in early 2018. Also a great place to exchange money in the city is at the jeweler and pawn shops. They always gave me the standard rate and no waiting in line at a bank.

If you want to exchange currency less than $100USD, you can do it with the banks. If you want to exchange more than $100USD, you should do it at the two most popular locations behind Ben Thanh market. They have better exchange rates based on the conditions of your currency bills (old vs new bills). I forget the names of the place, but you can ask the local for the places.

You can get expat insurance in Vietnam. Some plans work throughout SEA.

If you're staying less than a year, just get international travel insurance. If staying longer, it's usually a good idea to go for private-hospital based insurance that covers a particular hospital like FV Hospital (French Vietnamese), Vinmec (Vin Group)..some of them have more than 1 branch. I normally stay in Vietnam about 3 months twice a year so I just use my Australian issued Platinum Visa card to purchase airfare and international travel insurance is included free.

@@tonyvu2011 Thanks Tony ! The private hospital insurance...do you get that directly from that hospital ? I’ll be 62 and my wife 57. We are in good health but we are too young to be on medicare here in the US. I really appreciate the information.

@@bananapatch9118 For a big group like Vinmec, you can buy directly from them. For others you buy from an insurer for that particular hospital and you can change hospital when you move to different area. International cover like Bupa is not bad, just a little more expensive but it covers your travel outside Vietnam too.

nhan Agnew ok, it’s possible but it’s easier to get a taxi for sure! I only recommend that bus if you’re traveling light and it’s not too far to walk from the bus stop to your hotel.

Yes, usually they offer chillies or chili sauce on the side so you can add as much as you want. Some of the chili peppers are extremely hot!

Very good advice especially dealing with Cyclo drivers. Sometimes they work with other drivers to pressure you to pay up, sometimes $50USD for a short ride.

You could potentially make them feel awkward or worse, offend them. It would be like tipping a restaurant owner, and they’re not necessarily the poorest. It’s better to compliment them on the taste of their food if you’re enjoying it. Coming back to them on another day will also make them happy. Even some people that work in restaurants sometimes refuse tips.

Thailand vs. Vietnam which is best. cheapest. friendliest people ? I think Thauland has been sinking a lot the last years -westerners are treated like we are not wellcomed anymore.. Vietnam wil be a hard competitor to Thailand I think and their hotels are nice to and quite cheaper...
@iamjohnsaboe
@iamjohnsaboe 4 жыл бұрын
Thailand is getting more expensive due to government policies. Tighter restrictions on visas as well. Thailand has nicer beaches and probably better service standards overall than Vietnam. Vietnam has lots of room to grow and they are much friendlier and liberal on visas. Vietnam seems to be overall open for business and open to foreigners whereas Thailand appears to be clamping down. The people are very friendly in Vietnam. I wouldn’t say one is better than the other, they both have their strengths. Depends on what you’re interested in or looking for but definitely of the two Vietnam is more of a bargain. Your money definitely goes further.

Thank you John for take tiem to answer so detailed am sure many others want to ask you something also.. I realy appriciate that- yes I agree with you - - Vietnam sees more open and looks quite cheaper when comparing neverless in North East thailand is stil very cheap .but the girls are not allways nice and went rude I dont need that som visiting a neighbour country is easy in that region - maybe more careful lif in a massage in Vietnamo r I hear the call girls can be a nightmare I never lost anything in Thailand nad had many very nice ladies there all been nice sweet and honest. . I dont knowm uch about vieitnamese bar or massage scen but maybe some wil write about it.. have a nice time there and take care .
