Just in time for summer to kick off, we're back again with another batch!
Got a few mixers in the equation this time, some from the recent cab ride video, others happened fairly recently while covering a few different engines.
Chaos cuts loose like usual!

For people wondering how/why these things happen. 1. Wheel Cleaning. Dirty wheels on the cars themselves can cause them to "pick" a switch and decide to go....well...the other way. This is because of the build up near the flange of the wheel itself. Its easier to spot on metal wheels and harder to spot on black plastic ones. Plastic wheels will cause/pickup more "dirt" and get dirty faster then all metal ones. 2. Trackwork. This is the main reason why things...jump and derail. Making sure your joints between track pieces are as gap free as possible, making sure your solder jobs are not globby and wandering into the flange/inside area of the track, or the surface/top of the rail (outside doesn't matter). FLAT track, some spots on the video showed some bumpy track in areas that should be as flat as possible, this can cause trains to uncouple. Also causes the "break hose" of the coupler to dip and sometime run into the ballast or ties. For Switches, if a train still wants to "pick" the switch, even with clean wheels, you might need to do some minor filing or slight bending on the points that connect/touch the other rail. What you are trying to do is to get it to be as flush as possible when its touching the other side so the flange of the wheels don't have a chance to "find another path".
@FirstnameLastname-tp4zw
@FirstnameLastname-tp4zw 8 ай бұрын
What about expansion and contraction. Don't we need a little gap every now and then so the flex track can "flex". I sware in 3 years I had perfect joints and the pressure of summer winter summer winter etc. Kind of lifted on the plastic ties Walthers track had made. You can actually wobble the rail of some of my pieces. Just shows how loose things can get from temp. Differences. So I do have a small gap now every now and then. Small like 5 or 6 post it notes thick. This will protect plastic ties from warpage. Maybe?
@SirLANsalot
@SirLANsalot 8 ай бұрын
@@FirstnameLastname-tp4zw so when soldering rail together, alternate between them going every other joint, on each side, so that at least 1 joint is "welded" together. For Flex Track you can solder 1 complete joint, then just 1 side on the next, and repeat to allow that "wiggle" to happen. For Atlas Sectional track you want to do that about every 3rd section. This is entirely dependent if your train room is climate controlled or not, if it is, you really don't need to worry. If its not then ya, your going to want to have more "open" joints to let the metal do its thing. Of course this is entirely rendered moot if you use Kato Unitrack. As that stuff STAYS together because its not just relying on the jointer to stay together. So you don't need to do any soldering of any kind to keep it together.

I think this might be one of the biggest reasons that I prefer using bogie mounted couplers instead of body mounted. Going through things like switches is a little easier when the trucks are turned in the direction of the trains travel instead of just going straight on and pressing up against the side of the rails in order to turn the wheels. By having the coupler mounted on the bogies instead it's basically like hauling a wagon behind yourself, the front wheels always turn and follow the direction you move in which (for me anyways) makes switches much easier to deal with. Of course if you do derail on them anyways, then you have an even bigger mess because the car behind it will just be dragged along and so on and so forth with the rest of the train.
@FirstnameLastname-tp4zw
@FirstnameLastname-tp4zw 8 ай бұрын
It's nice for the short run. But if you like long trains you need to just modify to at least a decent KD couplers. They just must swing free in the coupler boxes and if your planning on moving and long string of equipment #5 's are out of the question. However I have added weight to some car putting screws just above the tricks into the cars body giving the wheel and rail a little more bite. I like that action. 🎉

You're REALLY lucky. I also run N scale and I run into tons of issues with derailments. But then again the only scale I haven't run into them like that is G. The N-scale club layout I run at is just as bad as this HO layout when it comes to issues like this.

Track laying is the most important part , you may not have time to do it right , but you will make time to do it over. Also building track on foam board using glues instead nails has a great deal to do with it. Foam board 1” is the smoothest surface you can get without having to hammer. And I’m using standard flex track not unitrak, to me unitrak just doesn’t look right. As far as wheels for N scale I find plastic better than metal.
@VestedUTuber
@VestedUTuber 7 ай бұрын
@@simonetaormina7080 I've personally found metal to work better, _but_ not just any metal wheels. There's a good reason why MicroTrains stopped making their metal wheelsets in favor of outsourcing them. Right now Intermountain makes some really good ones though they're a bit oversized compared to the prototype for performance purposes - a tradeoff I'd personally make but might tie some rivet counters' underwear in a knot.

I like the first-person view cam. What kind of cam is that? I'm using a DJI Action 2, which looks to be a touch bigger than that one (but smaller than something like a GoPro). It has a magnetic base, so I pulled the shell off a cheap Santa Fe caboose and swapped one of the couplers for a KaDee. With the shell off it, the magnetic base on the camera holds it tight to the weight baseplate in the car, and having both horn-hook and knuckle couplers on it, I can use it on any combination of vehicles or use it for a "converter" vehicle to combine both coupler types onto a single train. Works great.

That one with the railroad crossing buck catching the engine, how? How is that possible? It’s definitely far enough away. You can see it in the video. I have to say I model N scale and the only time I have an issue is when I create it. Also I have been to the Lehigh and Keystone valley RR and the West Island RR club both HO and they do run flawless. At least while I was there. I have been modeling most of my 60 year life and what you have has always been my problem as well , no matter how careful I was laying track. It made me go to O gauge but too big and just doesn’t look right. Should have went with 2 rail but still doesn’t look right unless you have proper space. Good luck guys
