The local thrift store in my area actually has Christmas in July so I went thru my bins and found that it was much easier to let things go because I wasn't wrapped up in all of the emotions of the holiday season. I will also try to donate anything that I don't use once I decorate for Christmas.

You are doing great! 👍 One way to think about items that have become damp with black mold is that, “Would I want my family members to get sick from this when I bring it out to display?” Even “cleaning” with a Clorox wipe will not remove all black mold, especially on clothing or soft items. Black mold is airborne and a very serious health hazard. This may make it somewhat easier to distinguish what is salvageable and what is not.

@@Natalie.D cheap hepas can be made by taping a 20 inch furnace filter to a box fan...( I use dollar tree duct tape- not too sticky) its so much cheaper esp if you can get them on sale or at a cheaper store: restore store or treasure hunt etc. cbc marketplace gave me the idea... they tested different filters and the most efficient and cheapest was DIY one. wished I thought of it. it also keeps the fan cleaner too. we have a lot of cats. I had a few of the small hepas.. I just use the box fans now.

I’m a level 1-2 lever hoarder but i dont want to be one at all. My mum was a hoarder so i have had to learn to throw things out by myself. I find your videos very helpful and yesterday I was throwing out something I was emotional attached to but was broken and I said loud “ tossy tossy” even though my native language is not English’s AND for the moment I can’t even remember what it was but I remember the feelings connected to this thing

ive had sentimental (plastic) things get damaged by sun exposure on my porch, and its tough seeing something change from how you remember it! taking pictures sometimes helps before tossing it. I wonder if for some of the dalmatian things you showed you could sort of ‘compromise’ with yourself and keep the item inside but not the damaged packaging? it could be good exposure for the ‘perfect state’ anxiety you’ve talked about in the past too, either way, you’ve got this!!

As a Brit I notice it is quite common to decorate for every ‘season’ in U.S, - Christmas, Easter, spring, autumn, Halloween, valentines etc etc. this is quite an alien idea in U.k and Europe, it’s just Christmas, some people decorate for Halloween but they are in the minority. Well done for reducing the decor bins, so much space in the basement now.

Oh wow, yes I didn’t know that, thank you for sharing! That explains why my mom only decorated for Christmas…maybe 1 or 2 things for Halloween bc of me! She’s from Chile!! We do decorate for almost every holiday! I would say that the only time we have “regular” decor is between Easter and Halloween!

I am a Brit who lives in the USA. When I first moved here, I was very surprised at all the decorating and spending going on for the various occasions as you listed. It is like every month it seems there's some kind of event going on. I started to slightly fall into the trap myself And started to decorate for Autumn And Thanksgiving, and Halloween stuff. Well, what happens is this, you see the merchandise in the shops, you think oh that's fun, that's cute. You see the neighbours decorations on their porch and at their windows. You see the advertisements. And so you think ok I will get some decor. It was kind of like "do as the Roman's do". It is consumerism at its finest. These companies are clever, they convince you that you need these items, there's psychology behind this, it is like you feel that you need to join in and then your life will be happier. You need to do it so that you'll fit in, and it makes you look like you're a fun and happy person and your home is a fun And happy home because you have fun, colourful things up around your home. There's just so much to it. And the thing is, all this stuff costs money. Money, I don't have a huge amount of, and money that ought to be saved. Also it takes up energy putting decor up, taking it down. I have health issues, chronic pain, it's just more work for me. Then you need the space to store all that crap. Storage containers too, so you spend more money on containers to hold the crap. Oh it's a whole thing, man. So I stopped going any further. And really, I realise it just isn't me. I don't need to do all of that. So when we moved to a smaller home. I got rid of the different extra decor but I do still decorate for Christmas, but not a whole lot. And I do put out flags for Veterans day and Memorial day.

Wow! The basement looks like it’s almost done to the point where most everything is in an organized labeled bin! That’s great!! Once that’s done, will you be doing KonMari on all the categories? Also, I think with more space in the basement you should eventually have the things from the attic moved down and organized with the things in basement so you can have everything together in once space, organized and see what you have! Like the Halloween decor with the rest of the holiday decorations eventually 😊 you may have already mentioned what your plans were but I may have missed it!!

As I watched you (and Miss Pepper), i thought about all of those churned items I have in the basement. In fact i just looked at 2 items this morning while waiting for the wash to finish. What did i do with them? Yup, you guessed it, put them into another drawer. Well, I am on my way down to finish the wash and will take those items and put them where they belong, in the trash! Thanks for your upbeat reminder to deal with those churned items. I look forward to your upbeat and honest videos. Much love to you and Miss Pepper!🤗

I look forward to Fridays because I know you will release a video!!!! Love the Christmas in July, theme! The items inside the boxes seem undamaged, consider letting go of the moldy boxes, and keep the items wrapped in tissue in another box. And place in a bin, or consider adding to the other Dalmatian keepsake bins. Best wishes!! I need to organize my closet and am not looking forwarded to it. So I plan to watch your cleaning the Laundry room series. If Ms. Heart can do it so can I. You have come to a place where you can tackle larger sections in one episode!!! Congratulations!!!

I know that when I declutter items, for the most part I don't miss them. Therefore I am not reminded of anything to do with what I got rid of - whether good or bad. Here's my question to you: If you got rid of the items that you purchased during the time you were bullied by schoolmates and later by that boyfriend, would you not have as many of those powerful and negative memories? I know they are associated with good memories in a way of having something to turn to. But they were crutches. And everytime you find these items, you always tell us the story of bullying. So it seems like you are holding on to your story. I am wondering if when you are done with this very large task of decluttering the basement - which by the way you are doing such an excellent job with - you work with your hubby and a therapist and haul out much of these particular items, talk about the experiences and what they did to you, and how you've come through all that, and then let the items go. That could be your goal for 2025. Because right now you are just rehashing the memories and keeping this story, instead of letting it go and really moving forward. That would be so rewarding for you. And truthfully it's not like you will forget what happened. But you won't be constantly triggered by them either. And an even stronger Melanie will emerge. I am saying all of this with a lot of love and hope that you can hear that. 🌻

I’ve been watching your channel from day one and I just have to ask has it ever occurred to you that maybe holding onto all this stuff like the Dalmatian stuff is actually a “reminder” of those bad times. I am a recovering hoarder too and I had to let go of the stuff that reminded me of the older less happier times and the weight lifted off me I didn’t even realize I had was enormous. I really want that for you and I want that for your husband and kids so you don’t have that hanging over you cluttering up your life anymore. But I will tell you to think about selling that stuff to collectors maybe on eBay not just in a yard sale because I’m pretty sure all your old childhood stuff is at this point collector stuff vintage or original and surely worth some money at this point. I feel like you have a small fortune there in those bins. The presence of those bins is subconsciously reminding you of those bad times. Even though you think it makes you feel safe I believe it’s reminding you of bad times. In some way it’s a shrine to them. If they weren’t there in your basement you would not have to keep talking about why you hold onto them or thinking about. It will just be gone. When in reality you are safe. You have your beautiful family and don’t need that old stuff anymore. And when it all goes away I can guarantee you the old hurt goes away too in ways you can’t know until they leave for good. Obviously no one can make you do something you aren’t ready to do but I just wonder if you’ve ever considered this.

Sometimes the universe will help us along to let go of things that are holding us back. Try thinking of the water damage as a God wink for you to let go of those things that constantly bring up an emotionally difficult time. While they helped you get through a crisis, you are no longer in survival mode and instead of helping you in the present they are doing the opposite by keeping you "stuck". It's time, you can let it go. It will hurt...kind of like saying good bye to an old friend for the last time, but all that past trauma is being held energetically and it's still affecting you. ❤❤❤ I've been through this and it's amazing how liberating it is to finally let go. Our house burnt to the ground and we lost everything even our beloved pets. Thirty years later, I can look back and honestly say it was a blessing in disguise. I love your channel and Miss Pepper is such sweet little assistant. 💕

I sometimes find things which I am suspicious of being near mouldy things. Be careful where you store the 101 Dalmatians things you’re keeping, in case they make other bits like soft furnishings susceptible to damage, too. That might just be anxiety, but I would hate for other precious things to be damaged as you’re cheating things. The need to hold onto some things makes me keep them too, I’m just not ready. For me, it’s moldy or sus family VHSs - not sure I’ll ever get them fixed :/
