Remember the disabled passengers you mentioned while 3D printing ... need a ramp as well as stairs.

A note about your wheelchair ramp. It looks like the total height from the ground to the top of the platform is about 5/8 inch; which is the equivalent of about 53 inches (or 4'-5.25") in full size. A standard commercial wheelchair ramp slope is 1:12. So a 53 inch rise would require a total ramp length of 53 feet. 53 feet in HO-scale converts to about 7.31 inches. Also, the minimum width would need to be 3 feet clear (from inside of railing to inside of railing) (full size) which scales to 0.41 inches for HO. For any corners, you'd need a level landing of 5 feet by 5 feet clear (or 0.69 x 0.69 inches for HO).

You need a subway(tunnel) or a pedestrian bridge to reach the other side. I have observed that the platforms in my neck of the woods either extend all the way to the rail, and are asphalt, or concrete that stops at the tie ends. The platforms are also rail height, with step boxes used for the "final" step down. Now commuter lines like the high level platforms- no car attendant needed to place the step box, doors open automatically, and the passenger just steps out.

Looking good Dave, great idea from Ailsa for the platform height. Also the ballast sets everything up. Regards Tom

Thanks Tom. Yes, the ballast really adds to the track I think.

For future reference : It looks like your long steel ruler is about 1" wide. So when it comes time to cut 1" wide strips of what-have-you, just line up the edge of the ruler and cut. No measuring needed. Oh, and when elevating a building like your station, you only really need to put support (in this case, cork strips) along the perimeter. The very centre of the building doesn't have to have support. This would save on your use of cork.

Looking great so far Dave. An idea for the back wall, how's about 'Low Relief' buildings, may give you enough room for a single lane road as well.

I like the idea of the row houses on the far side, or you could put in rail and have passenger car or freight stowage, or a museum track.

Looking good. On the other side of the tracks, commercial building flats (stores, etc.) might be good, but I think a street with a row of the painted ladies would look great if there is enough depth.
@ScottRails
@ScottRails 25 күн бұрын
There’s enough depth for those houses and one single track road without a sidewalk. Or, I could resize the depth of the houses by another inch. Once they are all squished together you wouldn’t notice how short they are.

For the disability ramp you could add the ramp to the front door. However, many modern passenger stations don’t require you to enter them so a ramp on the side works too. Both work.
@ScottRails
@ScottRails 25 күн бұрын
I thought it would make more sense for the ramp to lead up to the station platform. No need to add more obstacles like doors and people.

Mr. Scott, what would be great is a residential in one part. Then have small covenant stores at the bottom plus apartments on top. Good example for this Walthers merchant's row. Another example is Desine Presivation Models. You can have restaurants, convenient stores, music stores, and small shops. On top of Desine Presivation Models, you can have apartments on top of the stores. The one Desine Presivation model is the # 10600 Laube's linen Mill. The will fit is as a laundry fecelity. You will need one to wash table cloths, napkins, and uniforms if you want restaurants on your lay-out. How do I know?, I worked at The Olde School Reaturant in Brantford, Ontario. All can I say is to take your model railroad cap off and put on your Civil Engnering yellow hard har on Mike

I have some of those buildings , but they will be going in the large town area. This section is more like the entry into a town, so all those established businesses have not been created.

There are options for residential or business building "flats" you might want to consider for that new space??.Looking at the station...The cork base kind of looks like cinder block. Whenever i needed large sized plastic sheets for scratch building, i get a bunch of large styrene plastic "for sale " signs, if i couldn't find standard blank sheets at hobby shops.(wal mart specials,lol).

All great ideas, just wondering should you have started with the furthest point being your wall, shouldn't you work from the wall towards yourself to prevent damage to the existing scenery once you've finished it??

While your theory is sound, that would require a complete and thorough plan of what I was building on this layout. I do have a couple of corners where I will start at the back, but I can easily reach these straights without damaging anything.

I use cork to raise the rails a little, like it is in real life. Some people use it to reduce sound, but I have not found any difference.

Hi Dave, I apologize for being out of touch so long. Between work, family engagements, medical appointments, and working on the layout including updating the DCC-EX & Engine Driver software my life hasn't been my own. I'm going to miss the rock wall but it's your layout and therefore your rules. If you're going to have a passenger platform where the rock wall was, then REDUCE THE LENGTH of the platforms to accommodate a pedestrian crossing at the straight lengths. There doesn't appear to be sufficient space for an overhead pedestrian crossover. ALTERNATIVELY, you could create a flat version of a Railway Express Office (REO) where the rock wall was. You still may need to reduce the length of that platform. You don't need to 3D print an REO, or buy plastic kits; I use Elmer's 1/4" foam board. Look at my layout and you can see for yourself how I've done it. Whichever route you choose, keep up the excellent work! P.S., thank you for the monthly membership.
@ScottRails
@ScottRails 25 күн бұрын
Hey, I wanted the platform much longer than this, lol. If I decide to add a bridge, I will add some more cork to make a concrete platform for each side. Plenty of room for that.

You didn't spray paint your rails to give them that rust color before ballasting. And you need a ramp for the handicapped to get up onto the platform. That wouldn't fly in the USA. 😁 LOoks really good otherwise. 😉

I like your videos. The only suggestion I have is to dispense with any more ballasting videos. Every ballasting video on every channel is incredibly boring. Ballasting by nature is boring. I know this because I have ballasted hundreds of feet of track on my own layout. I did appreciate that you double timed the ballasting section. Keep up the good work
