Very happy to have finally found an explanation of the old speed control mechanism. But I so wish you would invest in a small, cheap tripod, because the constant jiggling is very distracting. But thank you.

Tank you for this video. I have a K45 I got free and wanted to take apart and degrease, I did it!!! But, I see one weight is off the governor and I put back on but it came off again . Do I need to replace whole governor part? 😮

Hay mark i was turning the speed control screw in rear the bottom and the screw came out and I heard a snap a little washer came out and I can't figure out how to get it back in place?

Great video. I just fully broke down a KA-5 (1976) to refurbish, and it looks like it has an identical speed control setup to this. I have it all back together but am struggling to get this set correctly (I didn’t pay attention to the distances pre-disassembly unfortunately). My two screws holding the plate on are fully buried with the spring fully compressed, and I still have no change in speed before speed 4 (seems like I’m missing speed 1 and 2 but then the rest work fine). I feel like it would work if I were just able to bring the plate closer, but I must have done something wrong to require this as it was working fine before disassembly. Is the speed control link that slides forward and backward with the control lever suppose to be attached to the bottom of the speed control plate, or does it just float and push the plate forward?

Hi there. The K45 and K5A are identical motors, Set the two top screws so that 3/8" distance is between the motor plate and the each boss of the bearing plate, Tighten the locknuts snugly so the screws can sill be turned but will stay in whatever position you ;eave them. With the unit on Speed 1, adjust the lower single screw, the end of which bears against the link connected to the speed knob (it just floats - there is a spring to keep the screw in contact with the link), until the planetary runs at 1 revolution per second (60 RPM), Once that condition is met, high speed should be correct. If needed high speed can be trimmed by equally turning the 2 top screws.

hi mark, I just recently acquired a K45 mixer and it is only running at high speed no matter what setting its at. any tips on how to fix this?

You can use genuine Whirlpool mixer grease but that model year wasn't produced by Whirlpool!

e grease is a general food grade grease in a whirlpool can. All food production facilities that have equipment that need grease lubrication use such a grease. Sunbeam (formerly) and Whirlpool package small quantities of this grease for sale at very high unit prices. In the day the mixer was made a certain petroleum company's type was specified. KitchenAid never did. to my knowledge, offer this grease in their branded packaging.

the grease sold "for mixers" is often not great and won't stick to the gears. I use Super Lube Synthetic Grease (NLGI 2) - it's food-safe and works well (and costs a lot less than the "official" greases)

Also my speed 1 is very fast is there any way to slow it down similar to the modern models? It's a beast and works great with many attachments without bogging down like the newer ones! Thank you again! 👍🏽

the small adjustment screw at the bottom of the speed plate when turned counter-clockwise will reduce the speed. The correct speed is 1 planetary revolution per second on speed 1.

Hi Mark, I am in the process of restoring a Hobart era K45, and one of the green cables that are coming from the motor to the control board is severely damaged. The insulation seems to have melted away, and the wire is exposed. This is my first restoration job, and really don't want to give up on this project. Is that something that can be fixed, if so how would you recommend I go about it?

Hi there. You can use shrink insulation to fix the exposed wire. You slide the cut to size tube of it over the wire and heat it with a match. Harbor Freight has it. Perhaps Lowes or Home Depot also.

The resistor has to be good also. To check it is good and connected keep the motor control points open by placing a match book cover or similar between them. The motor should run really slow. If it stops completely though, the resistor is bad or a connection to it is bad. Double check the capacitor.

Yes, that is just a variation in construction, to shield from the sparking.

Excuse me, can you tell me what capacity is the diode that is covered with the brown paper? And what is this diode for, in its diagram it appears as a capaitor. I will appreciate your response. Thank you

It is a 0.1 MFD capacitor. It supresses sparking,

two more questions, 1st.-the resistance that goes around the governor spring, what function does it do? 2a - how can I adapt a card to control speed instead of that resistance
