In this video we dive into changing the power cord on the pre solid state machines manufactured prior to 1978! These machines were built prior to 3 prong cords being standard and are actually a fire hazard!
The cords start to fray, as well as get gummy/sticky and weak!
Nothing a few tools and some proper direction cant fix!
If you need a new cord/grease/gasket/tools make sure to check out our website!

I just did this, as my sacrificial gear had just, uh, sacrificed itself. I went with lever-lock electrical connectors, which made my life ridiculously easy. I figure if they're up to code standard for being buried inside a wall, they'll be OK surrounded by cast metal. It does feel good to finally have the old girl grounded.

Thank you for this video! Both Kitchenaid and Hobart would not provide me with information on a replacement 3 prong cord for my K5A and small appliance repair shops in my area have refused to work on mine. @@MrMixer316 I know nothing about mechanics, but I wonder if you can answer something for me. I've heard the newer KitchenAids now have metal gears again (apparently, they used plastic for a while). But I'm also hearing the newer machines have a plastic gear-box, and it can break down easily, regardless of the gears. Maybe I've misunderstood this, but I've read this on one-star reviews on various sites. Thanks!

@@sashineb.2114 The gears in the tilt heads are still plastic, the professional 600/pro 5 plus are all metal, but they aren't that great tbh, some of them have a plastic transmission case and some a metal and the plastic ones will break on occasion.

I love hearing about the history of these awesome mixers. Several years ago I was watching QVC one day and they were featuring the KitchenAid. The person said that these were first made in 1919, and that any attachments from years gone by will still work with the mixers of today. I just think that is so cool! You mentioned how these mixers are often passed down through families, and I agree that is really awesome. Yes, these beauties are very expensive, but to me (and obviously to many others!) they are worth every penny. I normally wouldn’t be interested to watch a video of this nature because I’m clueless when it comes to anything mechanical, but I found this fascinating! Seems like a lot of folks have similar stories. I have my German baker grandfather's old Hobart K5-A and it still works! Its power cord is pretty knarly-looking, though, and I'd love to replace it. Is there any way of doing so that only requires taking the back of it off and working with the electrical connections on that end? I'm really reluctant to tear apart the head of the device to the degree you're doing here, especially the step that requires you to pop out one of the pins with a hammer! I cound myself as fairly machine literate (I repair microscopes for a living), but my experience is with modern electronics that are far more modular. Actually prying things apart that I want to have put back together again in the end is something I'm wary of.

And they go for about one dollar at thrift stores in their big box of cords. The KA cord is great plug and play option if your machine is Solid State.
