In this Hobby Cheating Tutorial I walk you through the methods of painting black of all kinds - cloth, leather and metal. We discuss the way to highlight and bring color into the black while still tricking the eye into seeing it as black. Hope you enjoy.

This might be obvious to most people, but i’ve realised that my painting was limited to how good anything could look, because I am using sub-parr techniques - meaning there’s a glass ceiling to how good anything i do would have looked. I’ve been trying out Vince’s techniques, although i feel like a beginner again, I’ve actually massively expanded the possibilities of how my figures can look. Thanks again, Vince.

I started watching this series on Tuesday (Thursday now) and have been learning so much, the information is so valuable and has shown me the next step forwards. I have a bunch of minis already primed and basecoated but they will be the last I ever do in the 'Citadel System' style. I can't wait to start trying out these methods. A superb series. I can't thank you enough. Best thing is I am not even half way through! I can see myself revisiting a lot of these videos again and again as I learn. Thank you very much.

Hi Vince, loving the videos, very helpful. Any tips on airbrushing black power armour? About to start a Raven Guard armyand would love to add a bit of contrast in addition to the edge highlighting. Thanks

My general pattern is to do a little small area of white, then glaze it with a very dark blue/grey. Then with a brush, I add a thin glaze of a white blue in the center. If gives a sort of fade effect. Black reflective armor is one of the toughest things to paint, there is no real short road unfortunately, but this is as close as it gets.

Vince - not sure how often you look at these older videos, but was curious if you would handle it the same process with a black mage armor that is trimmed in red. From what I just watched I picked up that I need to find a way to incorporate a bit of that warmer toned black with some dark gray. Anyway - just curious of how you might tackle that. Thanks

Not sure I understand exactly what you mean, if you mean black transitioning into red (on the same panel), then I would simply place the red into the mid-highlight and use a warm yellow highlight. I would place a little color color in the shadow, even if very subtle, something like a little blue-black in the darkest shadows. So it would run something like Dark Black-Blue to Black-Blue-Warm Grey-Black to Black Red - to dark red to yellow red in a small volume at the highlight. Did that answer your questions?

Vince Venturella I’ll give that a try, as it is black armor with red trim so those 2 colors will be transitioning back in forth over the majority of the mini. Thanks for the quick reply

Is using blue as a more prominent highlight color, specifically for armor, more of a preference? Or something to be considered with the entire look and feel of the model, like a cold lightsource or something similar? I am painting black templars and trying to get nice blends and feeling like its looking to washed out and not black enough. :(

Yep, blue is a good mid-tone for black as many light sources tend to be either blue or yellow. Warm colors don't look as good on black, but the blue (i.e. the sky) reflecting it's colors is a solid choice and it makes the transition easier as well.

If you were doing different leathers, would you use a similar bluish grey?

Sure, you can vary the colors along the spectrum slightly and have some brown grey, and so on.

how would you paint something as a black horse? something like the axe? I know that living leather and dead leather sounds obvious, but horses looks "shiny" and alive in the photos, nothing like the boots or cape.

Sorry, one more questions - i can find a pack of the Vallejo game Color metallic set; are they different to the metal colours you mention near the end?

Yes, they are very different. Unfortunately, Metal Color is unlike any other paint on the market. In general, Amazon is your way to go. The bottles are expensive, around 10 bucks each, but they are large and will last forever. My recommendation would be steel, dark aluminum and silver.

So that wash is dark grey, is that better than the black wash?

In general, it's perfectly substituable by something like Nuln Oil you thin just a tad.

Vallejo metal is not simply not available here, can i do the technique with Mig metal color ?

I would try to see if there is anywhere you can order VMeC from. That being said, if it's absolutely ungetable, Mig should work. (assuming we are talking about the Acrylic paint).

thank you, i just check, seem there is a shop in Amazon do ship it to my country, quite costly though, may i ask, which color in the series you think is the "must get" and which one to avoid beside Chrome ?

Steel, Dark Aluminum, Pale Burnt Metal, Silver. Those 4 and you're good.

what is the purpose of Pale Burnt Metal in miniture painting may i ask ? , you already demonstrate how to use other 3 in this video, but i can't imagine how to use it for weapon and armor beside use it for Jet exhaust

When you talk about color in the beginning aren't you really saying "hue"? For example red hue?

What priming technique? Zenephol?

Yep, zenithal highlighting. Basically pre-shading. Black base coat, greay at a 45 degree angle, then white from above to set the values of the light. I have several tutorials about the technique throughout and it's my primary method for getting a model ready.

After 22 years of painting I got my firs Washes (black and sepia), its all your fault Vince. Just adding to the stuff you made me do like airbrush. I have to stop watching these.
