I like it. Simple and cheap. I'd say if you start with spackle and just add a little bit of iron at a time, mix, add more, mix would make it easier to mix, just like adding flour to batter to avoid clumps.

Would you say that the bases end up heavier than gluing a washer in and covering that in spackle?

A washer would definitely be heavier, but not all bases are open underneath. A lot have mold gates or other bits clogging up the works. This was mostly just an exercise in curiosity tbh.

How long does it take for the spackle to fully dry?

Depends on the spackle, there's some that's fast drying that takes minutes, but it's usually an hour or two.
