either of you could answer this if you guys see it, would the biohome gravel not be a better option here? not criticising Im just trying to learn as I am getting this tank and was basically planning the same upgrade as you but with the gravel.

@@Muddflud it would certainly fit a lot easier! I was quite fidly to get it all in. I was just using what I had to hand. Bio gravel would work perfect

@@HobbyistFishkeeper thanks for responding, I thought maybe you went with that because it is a bit more porous than the bio gravel, im undecided on which way to go but at least I know it will hold 1kg of media so more than enough for the tank haha

I have Biohome ultimate marine media in a zipper bag in the pump chamber, 2lbs fits comfortably and it stays clean. The filter it comes with leave a bit to be desired. It's coarse and really hard to get in and out once it's wet. 4 Foam replacement filter pads for the Fluval 404/406 canaster filter fit perfect in the center chamber if you cut 3in off the top. Some filter floss on the side closest to the pump in an L shape so it covers the bottom keeps everything wedges in place. I have my heater in the first chamber but setting it up like this you still have room for the skimmer if you want. You actually get much more filter surface area doing it this way.

Great upgrades! I always put chemical filtration last but if it works for you, good stuff! Its a shame the pump can't be moved higher so another bag of biological can be squeezed in... but I do like ott filtration 😁

After I filmed I ended up putting the carbon in the 3rd chamber above the pump so I could squeeze some more biohome in the middle chamber 😂

i wish i had seen this 2 years ago. I get an awful lot of junk in chamber 1 and 2. im running a filter pad under my floss after the surface skimmer then purigen and after that carbon

That's the hobby in a nut shell... everyone makes mistakes and what works for me may not work you. Depending on how many fish you have in there I would get rid of the skimmer and put filter pads in instead and then introduce more bio media. Lose the carbon too unless your removing something?

Just querying the centre column, due to the hole positioning, would the water flow just go through the bottom bag of media in centre column, therefore not allowing anaerobic bacterial population of the upper bags?

Im planning on doing the same, but i do have lots of expensive black sand left over from other freshwater tanks so can i use that for a couple of clowns or does it have to be substrate specifically for marine?

With the upgrades in place, what could you safely stock the tank with in terms of corals/fish etc

Thats entirely up to you, if you are going more towards coral than fish fill your boots. With a tank so small, filtration is great but you still need to be vigilant with maintenance. If you are going with more than 2 fish stick with duncans zoas hammers anenome. If you just doing 2 clowns just go for it. I have a friend who has a 60ltr with a HOB filter and no skimmer... his tank is amazing but he does 20% water change 3 times a week, removes detritus with a turkey baseder... if your willing to put the work in. The world is your oyster

Hi, thanks for watching, only thing I change is the filter floss weekly, everything else is rinsed in the the bucket when doing a water change

I wouldnt class myself as an expert mate 😊 I've always said what works for me may not work for the viewers. There's just too many variables. There is a great deal of snobbery in salt water and this ideal that you have to spend thousands but i couldn't disagree more with the norm... 🤷‍♂️

The pump does 500GPH an hour or cycles the tank 8 1/2 times an hour. You may want more filtration with marine but see how it goes 1st

I would always change media over time but biohome will last you years. I change the pads every water change

You could do but you may as well just buy a standard tank and a reef light. Kind of defeats the object of buying the tank if you are going to pull it apart?

@@HobbyistFishkeeper the only reason I wanted to do that is because I already have the fluval evo and I'm not ready to have two tanks and also I got it pretty cheap from ebay, but the idea of having a bit more space in the tank and having extra water capacity from the filter canister makes sense, I'll give it a try soon and let you know how it goes 👍

I bought the 1000 as well. I was going to do a DIY box for my Roma 200 but I think I'm just gonna put it in the evo instead

I would argue that you dont need a p skimmer in a tank this small if you have decent mechanical and biological filtration. A p skimmer sticking out of the top would make this awesome sleek setup just a bit unsightly and noisy. If you you dont get an intank chamber box I would still recommend mechanical in that first chamber then pack the middle with biohome. I've even added a bag to the third now. Thanks for watching.

I think with some little design tweaks they could be awesome but I think new people to the hobby could easily overload the tanks.

Why do you say this... just curious as to your take on it... I'm in process of setting up an Evo 13.5 for my daughter, and like it enough I'm wanting another one, as well as the big 32.5g flex... Waterflow in the sump sections could be a touch better, but this looks to work fine... I plan to add the chamber 1 basket for when I'm not skimming, and when skimming use the foam block, when not skimming i don't know what I will even put in the 2nd compartment....as the in tank basket 1 will have mechanical and chemical sections covered... maybe chamber 2 basket filled with bio media, but that is taken care of with live rock and circulation... once mature I plan to basically run a heater and the foam block for mechanical filtration, and skim once in a while....along with weekly water changes... how much filtration do you think this little nano needs???

So errrrrrrrrrm* instead of tossing the skimmer why don’t you throw the ceramic things from the original filtration system to the fancy one you got and just replace the original… still using the skimmer where it’s intended. The original has carbon…. Which you are already using. Aswell as the foam which needs to be cleaned anyway

I know nothing about these tanks I'm a ball python guy now I breed snakes ... I've had fresh water but never saltwater
