In the video, the Hobie Drop-in with a new completely remote throttle has been added
and mounted to the Outback on an accessory track. A tiller extension with a u-joint was
added to bring the throttle control right next to the occupant. The hull spray skirt
“Wingz” were also added to test for water splashback on the drive system.
The remote throttle worked as designed and made the throttle control effortless as you
will see in the video. Outside of breaking in a new powerhead, there was not a glitch in
the response of the engine.
Spray skirts that were originally made out of plastic, were now made of birch, stained
blue to match the hull and cleared with 3 coats of clear polyurethane. These add-ons
also performed without a hitch. Deflecting water and keeping the engine dry during
any interaction with chop from boat wakes.
The Hobie Outback using 3 of 4 throttle clicks obtained a 6.0 mph top speed with no
incoming or outgoing current help. The average speed at 2 clicks was 4.5-4.9 mph. This
speed kept the RPM down and noise to a very tolerable level.
