Hobo Shoestring

Жыл бұрын

Matanuska River glacier meltwater next to my camp.
Not another person around me for over four miles from where I camped.
I'm headed to Whittier, Alaska, tomorrow Sunday April 23rd and camping near the railroad/vehicle tunnel.
I might take the huge ferry again to Valdez depending on how rainy the weather is at Valdez.

I'd love to be able to go camping again. But I am sick with cancer that has decreased my mobility, stamina, and strength. Guess I'll have to camp vicariously through you Hobo Shoestring. Thanks for posting this video. Stay safe. Hope you have a good time in Alaska. I have never been, but I sure would like to go.

Shoestring, pro-tip from a dedicated backpacker; On the ground-sheet for your tent, tuck the exposed edges up underneath the tent. If you don’t do that rain falls on those exposed edges and it will run underneath your tent and not drain into the ground. It will puddle under there, and your tent floor may leak or wet-out. You are the world’s best with a bivouac but trust me on the tent stuff. So glad to see you up and operating!

also if you ever get a tent without a footprint or want a new one, you can run tyvek through the washing machine and cut yourself a really strong footprint with real specific dimensions

Sheet your tent, what in the f are you talking about? Trying to talk like a rocket scientist about tents. Use English
@dfpytwa

I don't even bother with a tarp on the ground anymore. Since the zippers like to fail early on even the most expensive tents I just buy cheap ones that I can find that are earth toned and pitch them directly on the ground. I may fold up a tarp and put it on the inside to keep rocks and twigs from puncturing my air mattress and that has been the best way for me to keep water from puddling in my tent while camping. I have on old military poncho that is pretty much thrashed that I snap the sides together on and stake near my door through the islets then stretch it out from my tent, stake it on the other end then put a few rocks on the sides of it to keep it from blowing away. I call that my pissway. It makes a front porch and a walkway I can venture out onto at night barefoot in my underwear to take a piss off the end of away from my tent but that is about it for ground cover for me.

I had it on my USAF "dream sheet" for the 20 years I was on active duty, but they never sent me there. I did get sent to Iceland twice for 1 year each, but that's the closest I got to the Arctic. SHOESTRING ❤, I've been to that area. Salmon fishing is awesome. I lived outside of Palmer and camped near the Matanuska, Knick, and then down to Moose Pass in the winter. Spring moved into a tent off the Exit River coming from Exit Glacier, 8-9 miles from Seward. Be careful of them bears 🐻🐻🐻. Enjoy the million dollar and priceless views! Man, it's beautiful country up there. Cold fresh water. Best wishes and be safe! 👣🦅🪶

You sound like you feel better! And I love those little Duraflame 'fire starter' sticks. I had always used highway safety flares, but they burn so slow that it takes a bunch of kindling to get the rest of the wood started. And they're probably a bad choice for backpacking (they're pretty big) and hoboing (*lots* of light and smoke). Also, that "Hot Hands" brand of hand warmers also make a warmer shaped to fit inside your boots. You may not need them during the day, since you spend so much time walking, but they've given me many a decent night's sleep. I have big problems trying to sleep when my feet are cold. So good to see ya again - good luck getting to Whittier! Alaska looks so beautiful, but too cold for this Southern Boy!

Great video Shoestring!!! Glad to see you up, out and about again. We can definitely tell you are loving it too... I bought a SCCY CPX-2 about two years ago. It's a decent lil budget gun. The SCCY doesn't have a safety because it has a strong trigger pull, like 8lbs. I put a 4 lb pull mod kit in mine, still take a bit to pull that trigger. I don't use it much any more but I keep it around for home use, it sits in my couch arm rest cubby ready to rock, you know, just in case... My go to for carry is the SAR 9X Platinum now... LOVE THAT GUN!!! I envy the fact that you can shoot out there and not have to worry about hitting anyone or anything as it's so sparse...
