On the news this morning: Panhandler caught. His sign said (and I saw this myself) "In need of a job. Have resumes, please take one". The guy was interviewed and said he got over 600 offers for a job and will be taking one of them. This was in Tennessee.

Theres been a few times Ive thought of doing, when the places that provide help refuse and my two jobs still dont pay enough. I suppose I could get a 3rd, but then I wouldnt have time to sleep, eat or care for my son.

I have noticed that all the people begging for help, look so healthy and I'm sure they are able to work! It's a shame how they don't care, my husband is on disability and he still tries to do odd jobs here and there. He misses working and would stop getting his disability in a heartbeat to go back to work.

It isn't a scam. They clearly have their sign marked that they are travelling hobos. It would imply that they are asking for money to fund their travels. Who gives a shit? This video makes me want to take a trip to wherever they are to help them out, because I too, enjoy travelling. Have a bag of food and a gas card, as long as they aren't buying heroin, what's the big deal?? I would absolutely travel the country if I could. There you go Jason, you did not confront them or harass them in any way. You are safe and that is what I was worried about - your safety. I was kicked out by my family because I had a stroke and my knees have no cartilages due to football and track in high school. So I can’t walk hardly at all. Still living in my pickup truck after 3 years trying to get on my feet even now. Have great credit, pay my bills, use gym membership for showers, but have never panhandled for money. My point was that I became homeless due to body failing and family didn’t want to deal with me. I don’t drink or do drugs and never will. You can’t judge people as bums or play actors looking for a free ride. Shelters are full of ex-druggies, ex-alcoholics or have mental disabilities and so many rules that make it impossible to stay there when a person really needs a place to sleep during the day due to extreme pain from osteoarthritis. So when cops tell me to go to a shelter, it is not a place I feel safe nor would it be a good place for my disabilities. I go to the woods and set up a hammock so I can get rest during the day with my leg issues. Disability too high to qualify for section 8 housing, or food stamps. But not enough for housing. I will be in a vehicle for the rest of my life and am 58 yrs old. I accept it but never panhandle. Because of what happened to me I know that most homeless are not choosing this life. I fought hard to be able to talk again. Eventually I will not walk at all and Soc Sec Disability will only let me work 10 hrs/week or lose my benefits of 1935 act. Vocational Rehabilitation says I am unemployable as employers do not want to add me to their insurance with 2 knee surgeries forthcoming and not able to retain any training due to stroke. This is my world but I am better than 3 years ago. Yes I have an iPhone from Verizon which is my my to pay my bills on time and an account I’ve had for 20 yrs+ since I lost my trucking company to George Bush’s $5 diesel in 2008. Glad you are staying back from people and letting police confront these as some may be dangerous. Wishing you well and hope you never give these types a reason to sue you. Sorry for being hard on you earlier but it was to try and wake you up to the dangerous world of being homeless and avoiding crazies for 3 years myself. I wish I knew you around ten years ago my family was in a house fire our neighbor on the third floor decided it was a great idea to get drunk fry chicken then fall asleep with the grease on. My husband was fighting for his service-connected disability I was working forty hours a week and going to postgraduate fulltime. Plus our son was 6 then our daughter one. The fire happened on the third and of course, being the hardworking person I am I paid our rent on the second (paid it usually on the first unless Sunday was the first I wired money into the account so the bank was closed) our landlord was a jerk didn't give us the rent back or security deposit we won nine months later a lawsuit to get both back. Well we were living in the shelter where we come from you need a car no public transportation we had a hoopty about 15 years old no payment but I was young so my insurance was $275 a month my son has asthma and we didn't have insurance for the kids and I so if we wanted to get an apartment before we won our lawsuit for rent and security back I had to do something. I panhandled one hour a day after work I had to We never spent a penny on us of that money the next morning heading to school I deposited it in our savings account both for safety and to let interest accrue. We were able to get a townhouse in four months because of me doing that. We repay to this day we volunteer ten years later at the food pantry my husband now has his 100% service-connected disability so he volunteers Monday-Friday and because I have my career I volunteer at the soup kitchen Saturday and Sunday. We are not ashamed of this I just wish I knew you then I have the inkling if you realized our story was true after panhandling I went straight to the family shelter you would have seen it was so and our fire was in the papers back then and I could have shown you the Salvation Army paperwork they arrived at the scene of the fire and helped that night. Maybe you would have helped us and I am a great sewer and crocheter when people helped us back then I went to the thrift store got a bag of yarn for $1 and made them something as a thank you Sorry for my ramble

In my opinion, It’s more rewarding when you are discreet when you help others.When you broadcast your kind deeds it looks more self serving than giving out of the kindness of your heart. If you do it because it’s the Christian (humane)thing to do, then maybe you should look over the Bible a little better when it refers to giving. God does not bless people who give just for self recognition. In the Bible in plainly states to be discreet about it . If you are doing it out of the kindness of your heart, then why do you feel the need for others to know about it? I would think as long as God knew that would be all that mattered...

I’m sure not all of them are taking advantage of others. There are always a few who do. If I let the few stop me from being kind, I’m the one missing out on being a blessing to someone who truly needs it. There are many homeless people who live in campers, take a look at California. Even those who have less a car or truck could be homeless. There is always a story we don’t know behind those signs.

Same where I live..ppl buy an old trailer or motor home and go up n down the state panhandling..for these ppl it is a chosen way of life..

A lot of these scammers use dogs to elicit pity and sympathy from people, in order to more efficiently separate them from their hard-earned money, to support their lazy lifestyle. I used to see a group of homeless guys hanging out in front of a grocery store, one who had a year-old dog with him. I have a soft spot for animals, so I bought a bag of dog food for the pooch, and some cheeseburgers for the owner and his friends. Right away, they all started feeding themselves, and I had to insist they feed the dog as well, which he finally did. The dog was ravenous, but otherwise in good health. I trained one of the guys on how to start a window washing business, even giving him the tools to get started- buckets, squeegee, rags, soap, sponges, gloves, and a clean t-shirt. When I suggested the dog owner help his friend, he came up with a lame excuse not to work, and he was probably the youngest one there. You can lead a horse to water...

I was once homeless I had to panhandle to get money to feed my kids and pay for a hotel room till one day someone stopped and helped me get on my feet they called around and got me and my kids in the shelter I dont know how they did it cause the shelter was full I have 3 babies at that time I was able to get things rolling clean up get clothes and go job hunting was able to child care got a job as a dish washer worked at that job for 30 years I made it and my kids seen as a single mother of the struggles I went through they went on to finish school and collage and now I am a grandma of two a retired what I am saying every one has a story or a reason for panhandling you cant judge them only God can to me I feel you are sticking them by driving after them seeing were they ok yeah get out of the car ask questions but why follow them and harrass them just leave them be they are not hurting any one get their story and go about your business and leave it at that

Actually, the term Hobo is used here incorrectly. The typical Hobo is a migrant WORKER who works only when necessary. A BUM, on the other hand, refuses to work, and relies on handouts and scrounging. These people are not Hobos, they're bums.

Several years ago a guy told me a story about answering aCraigslist ad down in Houston for “$9/hr. No exo. No taxes”. He answered the ad. Some gypsy dude was hiring people to stand on corners begging for money and paying them $9/hr. and keeping the rest. He had a way of watching them to make sure they weren’t skimming from him.

I saw that same guy in the Wareham Ma. Walmart a few years ago before they moved to their new location standing on the median strip with a sign stating he would work for food their was a camper in the parking lot.

I'm a truck driver I was at a PILOT getting something to eat & drink & I saw a panhandler at the Exit of this PILOT we looked at eachother he thought that I was going to give him money but I went on my way not giving him a dime.

If they were really hurting, they would take a more humble stance in my opinion. These panhandlers seem to move about and enjoy what they're doing. Clothes are clean, not dirty or wrinkled. Maybe they should give the dog a good home, saving on expenses.

actually panhandling is a form of soliciting many jurisdictions require you to go to the police station to obtain a permit that your required to wear to solicit . also many states have a law where you can't solicit from the roadway that's why you see people like these move into walmart and other parking lots. i think walmart would allow gypsy's to set up in there parking lot if they could make a buck.
