The day before Labor Day in Iron Mountain, Michigan and my messages start going off "panhandlers at Walmart". Its been a while since we've seen any, but I'm always to expose some more. I sat and watched them for over 2 hours in order to get the video you are seeing now.
There were 4 of them, taking turns with different signs and confusing people as to what was happening. Watch me confront them and tell them I had been filming them for 2 hours, the guy in red was not very happy...

Seen a guy holding a "Will Work for Food, God Bless" sign at an intersection. I rolled up on the guy and said, _"Noticed your sign, you will work for food."_ Told the guy that I had 100 acres that I needed to build some fencing around and some other general work. Told him that I'd pay him $100.00 per day (cash money) on top of room and board, and that the job would last about 3 weeks. This guy looks at me, removes his cap; as he scratches his head and says, … _"well, my schedule is pretty much booked, but if you just could spare some change, ... blah, blah, blah!"_ I said, _"that's what I thought"_ and I drove on my merry way. *What a pathetic way to live a life!*

Same thing, a few years ago I worked for 40 days straight. Most over 8 hrs days. Normally 10 to 12. some 16 plus hrs. I see a guy holding a will work for food sign. I was heading home and wanted a shower and a few beers. Grass hadn't been cut in 2 weeks because I simply didn't have times. takes an hr to cut my grass. I offered him 25 to cut it. a meal of his choice from burger King and a ride back to the area he was in. He wouldn't get into my car..lol so every time I saw him after that I slowed down and perched him. He was gone a few weeks later.

Ok that sounds good to me, what kind of fence would I be building wood or chain link how tall would it be. Would I also be digging the post holes by hand would I also get to use a rock barr or use a auger to dig the holes. Would I also mix the concrete and pour it and level the post do I get to use a bob cat to move the fence fabric rolls how deep would the post holes be and how far apart would they be better make sure about that or the next wind storm would just blow your fence fown.

I'm homeless myself an on disability an i travel by Greyhound some because I don't get enough to live I do panhandle some when I run out of money an it still makes me sick to see these fakes that can easily get a job but don't want to work an I wish every I could find a job instead of being told to get one like I'm some lazy ass that never tried

When I was 18, I worked for my dad but he moved to another state asking if I would go with. I thought that it was time to be an adult and stated on my own. I was out the job and lived in his abandoned house. Eventually, I was kicked out in the dead winter. When looking for work, I didn't have a phone or an address. I wrote on the back of applications that I'd be their every day checking on my app. No one woukd hire me. I burried myself under snow at night to trap my body heat but still freezing and some nights I thought I was going to die. I'd drink from fast food restroom sinks and wash up in outside gas station bathrooms. While I was homeless, jobless and desperate, I never asked for money or food from strangers. Granted, I did steal from gas stations a few times for a bite, and I'm not proud of that. After finally getting a job at Taco Bell, I felt like a new man. I was making less than working for my dad, but anything earned is better than nothing and a lot better than anything taken from others. I don't understand how people could continue to stay down in life. I don't want to understand how either. Get up people! Stand up and walk forwards! Don't let others drag you around to get by! Don't drag others down with you! Get up!
@cidguy

@Jamie Bennett Sad? I'm not following you. I do understand the differences between homeless and "home free". The term "home free" and the word homeless don't relate to eachother within my vocabulary. How are you defining "home free"? The definitions that I find when researching basically states one that has achived or is in sight of achieving ones objective. When stranded in the snow without a place to call home, I sure as hell didn't feel "home free". Being without shelter wasn't my objective. Finding shelter and work was my objective. I now feel that I've found home plate. If you are defining "home free" as being free from a home, well, I don't think that I've ever heard anyone use that term in that manor. If that's what you define as being "home free", then I'm glad that I'm not "home free" and I'm thankful to have a soft spot away from critters to rest in at night. I'd recommend getting on the same page as the rest of humanity so that things will make more sense. If you're using a different meaning on phrases and words than others and I, then what we have here is failure to communicate.

Hi - I can relate. This is why I get angry when I hear the term "white privilege". Nobody ever handed me anything. I've had to work hard for everything I have and I've worked hard at jobs that paid very little without complaint. I didn't want to have to go back home and ask my parents for anything, even though they would have helped me. It may take a few years, but eventually, if you work and always strive to learn, you develop a myriad of skills. I now hire others instead of worrying about getting hired and frankly, people submit applications where they can't even spell simple words and I'm supposed to hire them? My first job where I got paid well, I got by going to the HR office of the company every single day. You know what? The HR supervisor finally got tired of seeing me there and hired me. I could have sat at home, complaining, or drawing unemployment, but I fought my way to where I am. It was a hard road and I can still remember having nothing to eat but a can of green beans and selling my personal items to buy food, or pay rent. If there is white privilege, maybe I'm not while because I never benefited from it. It's just an excuse to be lazy, or uneducated. You took a job at Taco Bell and were glad to have it. That's the right attitude and because of that attitude, I'm sure you're doing OK now. One thing I always did, no matter how little I was paid, or how menial the job, I did it the very best I could because I knew people were watching me. Several times in my working life, I've been offered jobs because people observed me and liked my initiative. I always tried to come up with better ways to do the job too and people notice that as well. If you work at McDonald's, be the best McDonald's employee in the place, look for ways to improve the store and don't worry about what others are doing. Too often people worry about others. "Oh, he's not doing anything and gets away with it." No, he's not getting away with it. The boss knows what's going on and making notes on it. I'm a manager now, but I will purposely leave garbage sitting on the floor to see if anyone will pick it up. Not so surprisingly, they will ignore it for days. When I was in their shoes, I would always pick up trash and throw it away if I saw it. These are indicators of what to expect over the long run from people. Mind your own business, do your job, never say, "it's not my job" when asked to do something you don't normally do, be inventive. If you know every aspect of your job, watch others, even contractors that come in. I picked up thermoplastic fabrication and welding (a unique skill) from a contractor that used to come in and do jobs for the company I worked for 20 years ago. That skill has served me many times. I also learned industrial pipe-fitting the same way, by watching contractors. On my lunch, I would go and watch and ask questions. I have learned several other trade skills that way, which also help me in my house. I don't have to call repair people for anything. I don't work in trades, but I know them. Anyway, being industrious can help you in so many ways. I guess what I'm saying is, be the best employee at your company. Even if the boss doesn't like you and ignores your good work, someone, sometime will notice and you will benefit from it.

@ *HI* : I'm guessing that while you were going through all this (& make no mistake, I truly commend you for sticking with the program & making your life happen) you had your ID in your possession Or could positively lay hands to it within hours? Not everyone is that fortunate. I personally went through an extended homeless period in my life, back in the late 80s. Had it not been for a freak chance encounter on the street with a friend of my sister - as I had lost all track of my family - I'd likely be homeless even today. My sister had handled my mothers estate when she passed, & so had laid hands to all Mom's photos & vital documents, including my birth certificate & social security card. When you don't have ID the streets can be a ***VERY*** permanent address...

I never give money. I've given a Starbucks gift card I got for Christmas once because it was snowing and there was one across the street. I've offered good from a fast food joint and had the homeless man get upset with me for not giving him money. I've offered to buy food for a supposed homeless women and her 12 year old son (who was fat as a whale) and the women refused unless she would get to go with me and pick the food out herself. I've had a man break down in tears when I gave him food and a blanket. I had a women get mad because she was black and i am black and I didnt give her anything because I had nothing on me. I suppose she thought I was a race traitor becaise I was with my white bf and didnt give her anything. You never know what you're going to get, but the true homeless seem genuinely grateful.

There was a guy holding a sign similar to these guys in the video. Dylan did chores & koolaid stands to save up for stuff to buy. Dylan gave this guy 10$. He was so proud he earned it himself & told the guy he wanted him to eat instead of buying something for himself. The guy told my son. "Thank you, I havent eaten in 2days". We went next door to McDonald's to eat, after pumping gas, the "homeless" guy ordered at the next register. He proceeded to pull out a HUGE wad of $, all I could see were 20s. I told my son to go sit, then I told this guy that he should be ashamed.

Besides, between jobs, gas and upkeep for the truck, nood clothes for interviews and work... startup moneys gotta come from somewhere... asking for spare change, much of which ends up under car seats, in couch cushions, or an ashtray on a countertop domewhere, isn't hurting anybody. I was recently in Mexico, our poor people here are rich compared to the poor people there. Guess what? NO ONE was sitting on a corner with a sign asking for a handout! Did not see even one. They hustle, they make their own jobs. They sell the most random things to people at streets lights. They grab a hankie and turn themselves into parking attendants. They run up and wash your windshield at a red light. The kids sell candy. The women make crafts to sell. The only people I saw begging for money were people who were severely crippled and truly helpless. It's so frustrating to see so many young able bodied people on the streets here with a sign, but they have no interest in working for money, just want a free handout. I know we are supposed to care for the "least of these", but sometimes the best way to help someone is to teach him to fish, not just keep giving him fish...
@whosurlady
@whosurlady 5 жыл бұрын
Selling things at street lights is a crime, in the USA. There's all kinds of red tape and fees/fines. Children can't even sell lemonade, in their front yard! If you impersonate a parking attendant, you will be charged with a crime. If you wash people's windshields, without permission, you will be charged with a crime. You don't know what young able-bodied people are interested in. Your assumptions do not take into account the current economy. It is impossible to pay for 2 bedroom apartment, on a single income, in any part of the USA. If you want to teach someone to fish, offer to pay them for working. I have never turned down honest labor. I would rather earn than beg.

I been homeless just about three years and went to the shelter for help. I became homeless after I lost both my feet amputated, and a broken back. I get the minimum from SSD because I didn’t work the last four quarters. I had many people who wanted to help me and put me up, but the landlord doesn’t want me there because it’s not setup as a handicap apartment. I have tried to get work but with no luck. I don’t ask for money. You have a lot of people who don’t work and ask for money. They stay in cars, or they do have places to live. I tell you if you want you can look into their situation and know the truth. I have nothing to hide I would love for people to make phone calls and ask these shelters what is the problem with helping the handicap or people over 65, why do they have to die out here. I do feel a lot of hate from the people who have past a lot of judgement. I did steal the wheelchair I am using from the company who uses tax money. I also had a person from the church steal my things that I used to keep warm for the winter. We have many using the poor for their greedy gains. Your Catholic Church setup a lottery for the low income, I came in at number 81 and was told sorry because I don’t have enough income I cannot have an apartment. So what was this Catholic Church thing about a lottery for, no one has the answer. I say keep donating to this organization and you are doing nothing more but feeding their greedy ways.

There was a man in my area that had a shtick going where he said his daughter was in the hospital and his car wouldn’t start because his battery was dead and needed money to buy a car battery so he could visit his daughter. The first time I saw him he was at the grocery store and he was very nice and polite so I gave him 2 dollars and felt pretty stupid because 3 days later I saw him at a gas station giving someone the same story. I approached him and said his story was unlikely true because it’d been days since he’d said the same thing to me. If looks could kill I would’ve been dead right there because the frown he gave me I’ll never forget, this conman who was so nice and polite just 3 days earlier all the sudden looked like a damn monster he frowned at me so intensely. That was about 10 years ago and for approximately 6 months I’d occasionally see him and often I’d see him escorted out of various places such as movie theaters, stores and so on. Then all the sudden i wasn’t seeing him at all and supposedly he died of a drug overdose. I will say the ones with signs who do not approach cars and just stand there keeping their distance from drivers meh they don’t bother me. I still look down on it and feel they should get a damn job but if they keep a distance and don’t say anything to me I’m just indifferent to those in particular.

And it's all tax free money, too. I heard about this young boy who opened up a lemonade stand to make a few bucks. It was in his own yard, too. The authorities closed him down because he didn't have a permit. I think he was 8 or 10 yrs old. There was a case at UNH where a student working his way through college obtained a grocery cart, filled it with Italian Sandwiches and sold them in the dorms to other hungry students. He was providing a very needed and wanted service, but Authorities shut him down. More recently, a youngster on Merrymeeting Lake in New Durham, NH was selling ice cream out of his Dad's pontoon boat, because his dad had done it when he was young. The authorities told him he can't do that without proper permits. So, in this case, the young entrepreneur acquired the necessary papers and not only sold ice cream, but hot dogs, sodas chips and a few other things. He did very well. I know Democrats and Republicans have differing views on this, but if someone comes up with an idea, that the surrounding people want, and benefit from, why shouldn't everyone be supportive of it? My opinion, if you have to reach a certain age, say 16, to work, then any person under 16 should be able to sell Kool Aid, Oreo Cookies, Ice Cream, or whatever, Without needing a government-issued qualifying permission slip. And why don't these people in the video need a permission slip? They are just receiving money for nothing. At least in those other cases, they were supplying a service. . .

These pan handling scammers have saturated New Orleans. I can't drive anywhere without being asked for money at every corner. They have tattoos, smoke cigerrets, and a lot of them have pet dogs! My husband and I work our ass's off and we don't have pets because of the cost. We quit smoking years ago because of the cost. This is the new Liberal America where people are too damn good to work hard and work thier way up. This generation expects everything to be given to them and they love playing victim. For all you who feel sorry for these people and are attacking the guy filming, how many panhndlers have you taken in? Let them come live with you if you feel so sorry for them.

I have have a hard time believing someone able to waste time surfing KZfaq is doing it from under a bridge somewhere Buckwheat. Prior to December, Walmart's average wage was 13.00/hour and they've increased their MINIMUM wage a full dollar in January, so that number would be higher now. If you can't rent a room and feed yourself for $520/month plus benefits using available resources that supplement lower incomes you really are dumber than a bag of... Dirt.

@@demonocusmetalocus3558 But a security guard doesn't just stand there doing nothing. I stood watch in the military, as well as looked into various security jobs after discharge. Unfortunately for those that are homeless, you have to have a residence, pass a drug test, in my state pass a security guard class that costs money, and be in ok shape to be a security guard. Drug addicts and homeless are malnourished, unreliable and have more struggles than the average person that average people don't realize or think about, and definitely have a difficult time getting employment, even something as simple as a security guard. Would you as an employer hire a homeless person?? Especially when that person is responsible for the care and security of x amount of dollars of property? Most likely not. When i was homeless, i literally looked like a holocaust survivor and had amazingly low energy. Im pretty sure you've never actually been homeless, otherwise we wouldn't be having this conversation

Actually many years ago i was homeless,i wasn't a drug addict though unless you count cigarettes(quit smoking 8 years ago btw) and the security guard comment was a joke did you not see the smiley face? You asked what job you could sit and do nothing and that seemed like the funniest answer. Anyway i lived on welfare for a few years ,ate in soup kitchens,stayed in homeless shelters,even slept in an atm lobby 1 time i eventually settled down in 1 city and found a job,its not that hard many places need people,you might have to actually do a little work though,restaurants always need people,same with gas stations ,grocery stores etc. when i started my job i weighed 120 pounds that was 21 years ago and i'm still there and quite happy and would never want to go back to being unemployed again. People who say they can't work are just making excuses because they really don't want to work i've known many of these people over the years. You tell them to go apply at a place and they always find an excuse for why they can't and they sit and blame everyone else for their problems.

I don't know if this is funny, sad, outrageous, or shameful, but what shocks me is how young these dudes are and not willing to work. The agency where I work, and I'm sure other Health Agencies are virtually begging people to work. They're even willing to take people with no experience but at least a CNA certificate. In the Health Care field one can work the hours, time and extent per day, week, month, or year. There is no limits in it. I wish I could have had a good English years ago and today I would've been an MD.

My mom yelled at them in her old West Virginia cranky granny 88 year old way and said after that to come in the store with her and she will buy milk and ice because they had a couple coolers which could serve as water as well as it melted. Then bought bread and peanut butter and lunch meat, cheese and some more nutritious fruit and veggies and a bag of oranges and some plastic cups and paper towels. She said that should keep you a few days. She said she didn't want to see them asking for money anymore from these old ppl who could barely afford to live as well.
