The small guy with the scrum cap you keep seeing is actually two different people! Cheslin Kolbe (Who i would recommend you watch a video on), and Kurt Lee Arendse. No rugby union player "owns" their number, instead, the number merely indicates the position that player is playing, which is why it changes throughout the video.

Springboks dont work off individual brilliance, they work as a unit but they do have a few superstars such as Etzebeth who is a monster and the best lock for several years now.

The player with the more yellow scrum cap is Kurt-Lee Aarendse, and the one with the black and green on the back is Cheslin Kolbe, and the other guy who playes 14, without a scrum cap is Canan Moodie

Don’t forget we were unable to play the first 5 world cups because of being banned during apartheid days…but teams used to do rebel tours to play us and the world always knew we were the team to beat. First off, these titles are just clickbait. Simple as that. The All Blacks are know for their sublime skills with ball in hand. The Sprinboks for their incredible physicality. They are my two favourite teams in Rugby, and despite Irish claims. They are still by far the two greatest teams in the world. All you need to do is watch the 2023 World Cup Final to see.

The thing you weren't sure on is known as a jackal, or jackalling. Basically: stealing the ball. When a tackle is made the tackler must release the player. And the ball carrier must make a move to 'release' the ball so that their teammates can collect it easilty, done by placing the ball, or presenting it. Then players usually contest over the ball by shoving against each other. This is a ruck. The first player there on the defensive teams end can attempt to compete for the ball by trying to grab it from the tackled ball carrier. If the ball carrier continues to hold on then a penalty is awarded to the defending team. Often the cleaners - attacking players will come to secure the ruck by standing over the ball carrier so that the scrumhalf can come collect the ball without interference. The cleaners will usually clean this jackaller (the person attempting to steal the ball from the tackled and downed ball carrier) off the ruck and then tack a strong stance over the ball to protect it from further interference, as stated.

You are allowed to grab the shirt just not the collar, thats why the jerseys are tight and slick nowdays. The stolen ball was because #2 was the first player there, he was allowed to paly the ball. All of BOK players are designed to fill the number at the back of their shirts but 100% of the players can switch and adapt other rolles.. 11 and 14 can play 9...9 and 15 can play 10,11 and 14..so it goes for the fowards

At 12:24 you did not know what happed, asking did they steal it. The Springboks where going to steal it. The pressure they put on the All Black player, caused him to hold the ball (which is illegal), resulting in a penalty.

I love your commentary. The big idea to understand about this team, in particular is that, their ethos is one of team first, I love what Nienaber and Erasmus achieved in getting players to play for each other.

I always love to see people reacting to rugby having not seen much of it before. The springbokke and the all blacks are the two best teams, watching them play is always amazing and I would also suggest reacting to players like Duhan Van Der Merwe(15’s), Werner Kok (7’s), Carlin Isles (7’s) and Seobelo Senatla (7’).

The Bokke are an awesome unit, as they have always been. South Africa produces huge men, especially in the Afrikaner community. In the past the Bokke had a reputation for being "dirty" players, which, in my opinion is generally incorrect. In those days, all rugby games had their swinging elbows, fists and heads, "we" all did this, I did, and I had it in return; it is rugby, not soccer where some "men" play act. When huge men do this the results stand out more, but the Bokke, in general, were never dirty just hugely aggressive and very direct. In contrast, the All Blacks, of old, were dirty. They played a, "Win at all costs" game. Their forwards used their studs on mens heads, as well as their bodies deliberately and with malice, often ripping them open (JPR Williams. Bridgend vs New Zealand 1978). Ending up at the bottom of a driving All Black ruck or maul was "open season" for them. These days the laws strictly prohibit such behaviour, which is correct. So, in my opinion, as a 65 year old rugby man, the Bokke deserve less criticism than many get away with. it's fair to say that wingers and fullbacks are typically smaller and faster, it is very dependant on the teams. New Zealand as example have massive wingers and full backs. It is very much a strategic call

Numbers are not allocated to individuals, like other sports, but display the position you play in the team. The right wing, for example, will always wear the no 14 jersey, irrespective of the individual who was picked to play there.

There are two small SA wings with headgear - Cheslin Kolbe often wears no.14 and Kurt-Lee Arendse mostly wears 11 - and they're both superstars of the game. Incredibly hard to pin down thanks to their fast feet and stepping, but also deceptively strong for their size. Both feature quite a lot on this vid.

Don't know what the % conversion rate is but it will be a bigger difference then if its right in front. Its a lot more difficult from the side line and then depending on what foot you kick off increases difficulty depending on what side of the field you are. So yeah ,you want to get as close to the poles as you possible can.

FYI the numbers do not belong to specific players. They indicate the position the person plays. So the starting team for every game will have the numbers 1 to 15. 1 and 3 are props. 2 is hooker. 4 and 5 are locks. 6 and 7 are flanks. 8 is called 8th man. 9 is scrum half. 10 is fly half. 11 and 14 are wings. 12 and 13 are centres. 15 is fullback. 1 to 8 are called the forwards. 9 to 15 are called the backs.

Your question on the Marx turnover around 12:18 comes down to the ball player going to ground and not releasing the ball for a fair contest by an opposition player to win the ball. The condition is that if you go to ground in the tackle the other party can try to win it by picking up the released ball “if” such an opposition player remains on his feet and enter within a 45° angle into the tackle area (ruck) from his own side. If he remains on his feet and the angle of entry into the ruck is correct but he still fails to win the ball then the referee will award a penalty against the attacking player for not releasing the ball while he is on the ground as a result of the tackle. Of course the attacking team can prevent this penalty by challenging the opposition contender by trying to get him off his feet. In the case of Marx the attack came to the ruck late and couldn’t get him off his feet so the ref had no option but to give the penalty.

Long passes sometimes look forward and often they do actually drift forward but that doesn't matter. The rules only say it must leave your hands going backwards, because the rules take into account that if you pass while running, even if the ball is angled back from your hands it will drift forward during flight due to momentum.

Rugby doesn't really have a star player in the way that (from my limited understanding) NFL teams have. The numbers on the jerseys refer to the position, they're not unique to the player (you saw three tries by Kurt-Lee Arendse in this video wearing 11, 14 and 23 jerseys). Everyone in the team is expected to attempt a try if the opportunity presents, but the wings (11 and 14) and centers (12 and 13) are generally more likely to get the opportunity, because of how the play proceeds after a scrum or a ruck. Repeated phases draw in defenders, then punt the ball out to the wing. There are some players who have outsized influence on the game, and if they're in the right position, it's very noticeable. An example, right now, is Antoine Dupont, France's scrumhalf. He's outrageously good at reading the field and kicking a ball from either left or right foot to exactly the right place. He's much more visible too because he plays scrumhalf, so he's generally the first player to touch the ball after a ruck or scrum. Scotland's Finn Russell is very similar. But there are lots of players who work their magic two or three passes befrore the wingers do the sexy stuff. The guy doing the behind-the-back pass in this video - Lukanyo Am - is one of the classiest centers around. He's excellent at tracking the play, anticipating where things are heading, knowing where each of his team mates are and more importantly, where they can get to, and getting himself into the right position to disrupt the opposition. It's like he views the game in slow motion compared to everyone else. He doesn't often get the try, but he so often makes it happen. Another is Pieter-Steph du Toit. The sheer number of tries where he was the 2nd or 3rd last person to handle the ball, and made the pivotal play, is underappreciated - you won't find a compilition of every time PSDT set up a try for someone else. It's not the sexy stuff but it's so important. The Rugby Championship is the Southern Hemisphere tournament (similar to Six Nations in the North). Each team plays each other team once, and the team with the most points win, compared to the world cup that ends in a knockout series. New Zealand (the All Blacks) have generally had a higher win rate than anyone else, so in a tournament like that they're much more likely to prevail.

At 12:27 what happened was when you get tackled you have an opportunity to place the ball then you have to let go of it but the bokke turned the guy so he is in the wrong position to place the ball subsequently he rolled over which counts as playing the ball on the ground and the bokke were awarded the penalty

great video. Not sure if anyone said this but with the kicking: There is a conversion and a penalty. So if a team scores a try, they can then convert the try to get an extra 2 points (try is 5 pts + conversion is 2 = 7) and there is a penalty, so if the other teams does something wrong and its close enough to the poles, we can then choose to kick for poles as a penalty and that is 3 points

No one player is our star. We have some players who can be considered the best in their world in their positions (Pollard, Kolbe, Kolisi, Marx, Etsebeth to name a few), but we don't have 'stars' who we depend on to win games. It's very much a team game and the team is the star. In the last World Cup we had nearly 2 full teams who, if both were allowed to enter, would probably have ended up playing the final against one another. Our rugby has been in another dimension for the last 4-6 years.

Scoring in the middle or wide is the same points which is 5 but now it's better to score in the middle it helps the conversion for extra 2 points whereas if u score wide it might not be easy to convert depending how good the kicker is.

Often they play together and one is left wing (11) and other one is right wing (14). You see them score alot of tries, because that is basically what the wings/backline do 😂😂 forwards win matches and the backs decide by how much. I won't say they are the 2 stars, because we have forwards that fuck people up, but they are really good

As a South African here I can tell you that the game is actually extremely technical and physical. I played as a youngster and it was brutal, there are some big, hard and aggressive guys there. I live abroad now and at 6 foot 1 I feel pretty good about my size but when I go back to SA I feel smaller than average. Big dudes there. Credit to all Rugby players not just South Africans, its a hard tough game I and I respect them albeit question why the hell do you do this to yourself?

scoring a try right in the middle of the uprights makes life a lot easier for the kicker. there is no rule about the distance from which they are allowed to take the conversion kick. its all about the angle. so if the conversion is right in the middle of the posts they can stand as close to the poles as they would like without angle coming into consideration. if the kick is to be taken from the corner of the field that means the kicker would need to stand considerable further away from the poles just to make the angle work. thus its always best to get those trys as close to the poles as possible. hope this makes sense.

The fights tend to be shoving yes, and that's purely because the rules are strict on punching, you can get banned for long periods of time for that unsportsmanlike behavior.
