Skating fast doesn't just have to do with a regular forward stride; after all, we seldom skate in a straight line for more than a few steps during a hockey game.
In this video I show you one simple step that every player should add to their arsenal in order to become more explosive and to accelerate very quickly.
Try it out and have fun practicing!

This has been my natural backwards to forwards transition, but I'll try the load and push, I kinda mohawk and glide.
@MarcelsHockeySchool

Yeah it’s basically the same movement but without a change of direction and a wider open-hip radius than a transition

Amazing stuff! Thanks! When you "open up and load up the back leg", I see that you still face your head forward. Is it ever a good idea to look back when you open up? Would it help or hinder?

I’d only look back if the puck was also coming from that direction

@@MarcelsHockeySchool Could a look "back" also aid in deception, to make the opponent think you're about to change direction or pass back (assuming you're carrying the puck)?

@@PaulMarangoni yes. I think when you load up the back foot you’ll automatically look back a tiny bit.

How do you gain speed and skate fast with the puck just skating forward no stick handles or crossovers

I'm not sure I understand: how is this 10&2 one leg hip opener with only the back leg doing t-push is going to generate More speed than crossovers where both legs are pushing? Could you please elaborate? Thank you!

I'm not sure of the actual physics, but I saw a few higher levels players doing it, as well as a young phenom over here in Germany doing it every time he would want to pick up a bit of speed, so I decided also to try it out myself. I feel that I can load up my back leg more than when doing a regular crossover, and that my blade angle changes so that I'm pushing directly backward (causing more forward momentum) than when crossing over where I'm kind of pushing sideways. Opening the hip also allows my to go straight ahead whereas the crossover changes your direction a bit. I would probably stick to the crossover when I already have a lot of speed going (because this is quite hard to do at high speeds), but use this at lower speeds, often when gliding after a pass reception, when I want to explode forward quickly from low speed.
