Note: I only realised on like third watch of the upload that I lost the Thackary Binx thread lmao but basically I'm just trying to say Hocus Pocus shows us two brother and sister sets who care about each other to solidify a pretty understated "family good" "siblings good" theme that runs through the movie, which contrasts nicely with the poorly written "three friends reuniting"/"three sisters love each other so much mwah" connection of the second movie. (i havent actually seen the second one but, since this is the internet, so that will NOT stop me) It really feels like they should have put some time between Bette Midler getting ULTIMATE POWER and regretting losing her sisters. Let her have a grand rumpus with her new powers by herself and going through denial of how much she misses them. Getting into shenanigans and such before she admits how lonely it is to not have them cackling alongside her. or whatever. Its still cheesy unnecessary redemption about how "women be empowered and solidarity", but then you could ALSO be like "being an evil, baby eating witch is more fun when you have your family with you doing evil baby eating stuff too." Crank up the camp comedy villan. idk. it'd at very least justify the line at 11:56 "my power is nothing without my sisters" if we actually saw the power without the sisters.

I watched this last fall with my friends and I’m not entirely convinced that the writers for this actually watched the original…the retconning goes beyond feeling cynical and just ends up feeling entirely disconnected (see: Billy randomly having a thick English accent in the sequel when he had an American accent in the original). I also thought it was convenient that Disney entirely got rid of the canon of the Sanderson sisters having gotten their powers from the devil, which was only implied through jokes to begin with. What makes the whole focus on sisterhood fall even more flat, beyond your extremely accurate point about the shift in Winifred truly coming from nowhere, was that the “sisterhood” among the three modern leads wasn’t really there either. IIRC half the movie was two of them arguing with the third over what turned out to be nothing…..which, yeah, can happen with teenaged friend groups, but was a waste of time in the context of a relatively short film where “the power of friendship and sisterhood” is supposed to be the point……Idk. An unsurprising disappointment from Disney. I will say though that the actress they got to play Winifred as a child was excellent and really nailed Bette Midler’s mannerisms.

I watched Hocus Pocus in the 90s and I admit I found Allison pretty inspiring, sadly enough 😂

I think the mayor and his candy apples was the worst part. Imagine that guy in the original movie? The parents in the original had a silly moment but they got serious. The mayor was a buffoon. Nothing grounds him. And he has no reason to act like that.
