Not that I follow loads of music reactors/analysts, but you are the first I've heard discuss the composition and theory behind "catchy" melodies and harmonies in such excellent detail, while not retracting from the sensory experiences we have experiencing the piece. And you're never a bit pedantic! I love it! Your analysis warm my brain as well as my emotions and that's priceless to me. ❤

This one definitely does provoke an emotional response. When it came out, we all took to calling it the reactor killer, because it tended to leave people speechless. Even reactors who know VoicePlay well would just stare at the camera and end the video, unable to form words. One guy jumped out of his chair while watching it, completely forgetting he was only wearing boxers. So you're in good company, feeling the impact of that song. Geoff wrote one hell of an arrangement, and they all sang their faces off.

Another masterful analysis of a masterful song. I would be hard pressed to "rank" my favorite VoicePlay songs. But.... This would have to be in the top 5. It's such a departure from their whimsical, "fun," up-beat covers that it takes my breath away. I was happy that you stopped and brought focus to, "... can't you hear it's sepulchral tone?..." That is one of my very favorite phrases by VoicePlay in ANYthing they have done. Between the lyrics (not theirs, but still) and the unexpected dissonant harmonies, I am always impressed when I hear it. Again, Good Sir, great reaction and analysis!

I always like to give props to Jose Rosario Jr. for his participation in this video. There was originally a different featured artist scheduled (Anthony Gargiula, who has appeared in a number of VoicePlay videos and shorts), but due to Covid travel restrictions, he was unable to make the filming. So Jose stepped in to help out, but his voice didn't match the part written for Anthony, so he graciously moved into what would have been Eli's backup role for the video. Eli had already recorded his own part, but when Anthony couldn't make it, he stepped up and performed a (probably slightly modified) version of Anthony's role. And both did their parts brilliantly! As did everyone else, but that's VoicePlay - it's pretty well expected! To hear Jose in other VP videos, check out My Mother Told Me or Drunken Sailor - it might be a good one as a follow up to HtC, as it doesn't take ANYTHING seriously! To hear Anthony, check out Golden Hour, Seven Nation Army, Creep, Black Hole Sun, or the pseudo-short Wellerman song.

Wow!! More music terminology & theory than I've ever heard before!! Your knowledge of music theory is unmatched across the range of reactors. Jose (Ho Zay) is phenomenal but wasn't supposed to be the feature. The intended feature couldn't make it because of Covid shutdowns and Jose was local and could jump in. Eli and Jose switched parts in the song due to Eli's higher range and what a final product!! Their ability to have multiple melodies all going simultaneously and somehow they all fit together is simply mindblowing!! You point out more in your single reaction than the other 50 reactions combined on this song. Amazing! And, SO looking forward to your reaction to Hall of the Mountain King and Dragonborn Comes!! Sir H has done a few reactions so far for VoicePlay. They are all great at opening up the hidden depths of the arrangements and sheer talent of this group. They can do anything from the utterly ridiculous (The Lion Sleeps Tonight) to sublime True Colours to cyberpunk (not my favourite but still mind blowing what they can achieve acapella). VoicePlay are independent and do just about everything themselves apart from the final audio mix and occasionally specialist makeup or camera work.

Ah! The song I sleep to! I think my favorite line is where Cesar sings about the formerly cursed crew of the Black Pearl. "Some men are alive, and some men have died, and OTHERS (meaning they're neither dead OR alive) sail on the sea!" Last year alone I listened to it over 43,500 times according to Spotify! That was just Jan-Nov. And I still listen to it all night! It was Number One before "Valhalla Calling" came out, which has too much of a beat to sleep to. This one rocks, in a rockabye baby sense.💙

I thought you would like this one! Others will probably mention it but Eli’s part was supposed to be a guest, Anthony G who has quite a different voice. He couldn’t make the flight so Jose stepped in and Eli ended up taking Anthony’s part. Anthony is an amazing singer (you’ll see) but that part was meant for Eli’s rock tone. Such a happy accident in my opinion. This one always gives me chills, so incredibly well done from the arrangement and visuals by Geoff, lighting by Eli and the incredible vocals by everyone!

So many reacters just go "well, that was odd" and move on...but I figured you would actually see the interesting effect it creates. Regarding this song's use in the film: The boy and the other condemned people at the start sang it as a summons for the Brethren Court to convene to address the desperate circumstances that had led to all those hangings, and it was reprised as a sort of passcode later on as the pirate lords were gathering to answer the summons. That's where a lot of the additional lyrics came from. A lot of reactors have been knocked out of their chairs by this video. There's a fandom-famous moment when a reactor was so blown away that he jumped up and walked off-camera forgetting that he only had his boxers on! I particularly love the interplay between Cesar's and Eli's parts here; for example, at 2:20 when Eli has got a full-on gleeful rock belt going and Cesar comes in, making it sound like he just cuts him off effortlessly without even raising his voice, and at 2:52-53 where Eli picks up Cesar's line so smoothly while Cesar veers off in a different direction that it took me several watches to figure out how he could be singing both parts at once!

I think of this line up with Cesar, Jose, and Eli as the 'three tenors'. The way their voices blend and then separate is what makes this cover a stand out.

Another top-notch R&A! I get so excited when I see you've posted a new video, especially when it's for any of my favorite acapella groups. I love them all dearly, but I think VP is my absolute favorite. They never stop raising the bar and surprising people and the fact that they do it all on their own is mind-blowing! Speaking of mind-blowing, that post-VoicePlay paralysis is REAL! Hehehehe!

Thank you for another excellent analysis. Although your terminology is foreign to me you demonstrate what you’re talking about with the piano which helps me recognize what you’re talking about when the song is replayed. I used to enjoy listening to them just because I enjoyed it, but now I appreciate it so much more due to analysis by people like you. Whatever they release is usually my favorite for a short time but I always come back to this one. As many times as I’ve heard it, I find myself swaying to the music every time. Others have filled you in on the substitution that José made. The reason he was able to join them is because he had been appearing in Hamilton in Chicago but they closed down the theater due to Covid. He flew back home just in time to be tapped for this. Another fun fact: he and Cesar were in high school theatrical productions together. The behind-the-scenes shows Cesar positively delirious that his old friend was coming back. I think he makes a great match for them. He was previously a member of the first “modern” a cappella group I ever remember hearing: Rockappella. My son was in school when the children’s television program “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego” came out and I stayed to watch the credits so I could find out who was singing the theme song. I was so blown away that these guys were doing it just with their voices.

interesting analysis of harmony, not very frequent to listen to, the greater part of the vocal coach is limited to analyze the melody or the extension of the singer. Thanks 👍

I truly enjoy your analysis of Voice Plays songs. Thank you so much for the technical breakdown of each of their voices. They are my favorite a cappella group. This particular song is my wife’s favorite from them (“Ain’t No Sunshine” by Geoff Castellucci is her favorite from him).

Jose Rosario Jr. was part of the Chicago company of Hamilton, in which he performed multiple starring roles - Alexander Hamilton, King George III, John Laurens, and Hercules Mulligan/ James Madison (at different times). I believe he has also been in other Broadway shows.

My first exposure to any KZfaq music was Geoff's Monster Mash. When I was looking for more Geoff I found VoicePlay and this was the one they were singing. I have been a delighted fan for anything they or just Geoff have done. So dang good. My music lessons started out with me and a piano in 6th grade, 7th brought on a clarinet for band. I got promoted to the bass clarinet and in high school because I was first chair of the 3 bass clarinetists, I got to play the contrabass clarinet during the part of the year that was symphonic and not marching band. One of our tubas taught me to do the string bass. All instruments for me, not voice but given that my musical exposure was the deep tones, both VoicePlay and Geoff are people that I love to listen to. Thanks for giving us a good lesson in things to listen to.
