Great video I do enjoy your channel, I have one question if you can ? My VN comm has cam bearings before removal at 12oclock all of em not sure if I should put new ones the same. Does it make any difference I read on chevs best to install em clocked at 2 but you put yours at 3-4, mines not having any mods done stock rebuild? Your reply much appreciated and yes there is not much info out there even shops give me mixed answers thank you.

Great work mate. An external 3/4 inch oil pick up will aid with volume and cavitation. Bushed lifter bores fix the plastics biggest leak. Plug the pump bypass and run a performance filter. Crankcase evacuation of some sort not just breather and catch can. Windage control is essential. Drill cam bearing bolt to oil pump gear and plug original hole. Oil return, block mods and external drain backs from heads to sump. If running a solid cam block the no 4 cam journal drivers side gallery feed, restrictor only needed for hydraulics. Accumulator outlet should be less then a foot away from pump sandwich plate, it won't get the oil in quick enough to save your engine otherwise.

Excellent vid Griff, thank you very much! I’m building a moderate nitrous 304 currently, have the block stripped and going to do this mod exactly how you demonstrated. Love your enthusiasm for our Aussie V8, keep up the good work!

thanks for the very detailed explanation. The oiling system on these engines is really their achilles heel. Not sure why Holden would have ever considered leaving the main bearings as such a low priority. I've got a moderately worked 5L, makes 310-320rwhp in my VH SS. It's mainly a street car, but I like to get it out on the track for a few sprint days every year. I take it no higher than 6200RPM, but I usually keep fairly constantly between 4500-6200RPM for most of the lap as that's where the best power range is. Pulled the bearing caps off a few times now with less than 15,000kms on the engine since the last time and the bearings, mains & big ends are shot again. I've done the performance oil pump mod, using your other video as a guide, I also fitted an ASR 6.5L internally gated sump. But bearings just aren't lasting. So engine is out again at the moment about this oiling stuff, I need to get a little more serious. I watched the COME Racing video, but Sam doesn't go too far into depth. Your explanation is really good. I like to know the reasoning behind the mods, and you explain trace the order of oiling circuit so thoroughly, so I now understand why the mods are done. Also I don't think Sam mentioned what size restrictor hole to drill into the #4 camshaft tunnel, but you mentioned 2mm, so that was good to know. Only thing I would like to see or find out a little more is what sort of drill you used to drill the hole in #1. I can't imagine getting a drill in there. Maybe you used a 90deg drill and I assume the hole would end up on a big of angle as you wouldn't get the drill in there straight. Still not real confident taking to an engine block with a drill and dremel, but this video certainly boosts my confidence a little.
@griffsrearmountturbothemod1623Ай бұрын
Gday mate, i drilled the hole on the angle, was tricky but quite doable. Great little mod and will ensure the mains gets a good supply coupled with the pump mod... I deeply feel through others having chopped out rod bearings is from oil surge, thats a big problem when the heads can't return oil quick enough back to sump, running a big volume pan with improved drain backs can really help durability and of course the mods are the icing on the cake.. Thanks for your indepth comment I enjoyed reading it, goodluck with yours 👍

Great video mate. I already knew alot of this, but that direct feed to mains #1 makes ALOT of sense why you move the lifter gallery to the front crossover. Thank you. P. S maybe weld an extension to your drill bit so you can drill deeper.

Excellent explanation bud, very well put !! It would be good if somehow you could streamline the oil pickup and strainer that's probably the wrong words or create more positive flow maybe a better way to put it !! Great lesson mate. All info is bang on. Are you thinking of externally feeding the pump.
@griffsrearmountturbothemod16236 жыл бұрын
G G Not sure at the moment, if i can fab my own internal pickup successfully i might stay with that... Whats your thoughts on running a external pickup? Thanks George...
@GG-rj4oj6 жыл бұрын
GRIFFS REARMOUNT TURBO, The Modfather i think external is much better. Drill and tap a AN fitting into the pump, you can run as big a line as you like and you also get to eliminate one 90deg bend in the block. Even if you mod the internal pick up , there isnt much room where it bolts to the block to successfully fit a larger tube all the way through. If you do decide to mod your pick up ext or int , you can buy a oil pickup builders kit from most speed shops. Looking forward to the next mod. Cheers Jason

Hi Griff, great video. What will be interesting with the oil extra flow you are creating by enlarging the diameter of the block oil galleries if the standard pump will still be capable to continually suppling the extra flow required????? Or is it time to go for the larger high volume pump???? I don't know way either but thought I'd ask the question....
@griffsrearmountturbothemod16236 жыл бұрын
Lacksballs The modded pump will love it, i may see a slight pressure drop, but at least i know the oil is getting were i need it most in spades... Remember oil pressure is guide to restriction, its all about volume and flow, well thats my philosophy... cheers mate

Hi Griffs, thanks for your info videos. With the 1st cam bearing seat, do you drill the hole through to the feed oil gallery 1st or do you cut the annulas 1st?

Hi there mate, great info. Thanks for sharing. Just wondering if you made a typo on the 3/8 BSP plugs? I have gone down this road before and remember using the black Allen key plugs and from memory were a 3/8 NPT. Or did you use totally different plugs. Cheers mate well done.

does anyone know where you can buy the M8 x 1.25 tapered plugs ? I've searched everywhere online can only find the finer thread M8 x 1.0 thread in the tapered plugs which I suspect is too fine for cast iron. I can find M8 x 1.25 grub screws, but they aren't tapered, which I'd prefer to avoid as it has the potential to drop into the oil gallery if it did happen to break lose. I would loctite it, but still.... peace of mind

can these Mods help the 253 as well??? I know there are plenty out there that bag the little 253!, but i reckon it"s a Great motor and it runs far cooler
@griffsrearmountturbothemod16235 ай бұрын
Their a great little engine, same stroke as a 308, just smaller bore, which means lighter pistons and thicker bores. The mod would help if revving it hard for extended periods, if not so much a nice modded standard oil pump would really help get the oil circulating at a higher pressure easily without stressing your oil drive shaft. Long live the holden v8
@blokeinacloak748 Жыл бұрын
Hi Griffo, I'm thinking, with the 5/8" drilling of the primary oil gallery after the pump, maybe only drill to just past the oil feed to No. 1 main bearing? Saves buying a longer drill bit and flow will be reduced a little after the oil take off for No. 1 main.

what I did was just trying to open up as much as practical, the main focus was redirecting oil so five and six rods could enjoy a better flow of oil... Plugs out turning the engine over using the starter motor, oil pressure gauge on oil pump reading zero, Removed gauge and oil slowly comes out whilst motor is turning over

You've probably sorted it by now but every rebuild I prime the oil pump by packing around the gears in the oil pump with vasoline. Also, while rebuilding it's a good idea to check the roll pin holding the oil pump drive gear on the shaft, punch out the roll pin to inspect.

I second that, watched both the COME racing video and this one, but haven't seen how the hole is drilled. Probably a no-brainer for those who have done it, but I'm concerned about limited access, angle of the drill etc. Would really appreciate seeing how it's done or at least some tips

Hi Griff, I have just completed all the drilling and tapping for the mods. Just got to create the annulus in cam bearing 1. Oh and used the m8x1.25 in bearing 4. Question for you; did you a taper plugs everywhere? and what loctite did you use to ensure they don’t come out? Thanks mate!, Anthony
