When the put that hiss in? That's when I knew this is real, and he was the idiot that gambles with range. The computer estimate is conservative for a reason. So it never overestimates, and to give you that hard nudge. Too many times when I was a starving student I had to drop in in neutral to coast, or very barely make it. Nope. working from home. Team Kim. Never ever let your gas get below 1/4 tank. There are carburetor demons in that last quarter and they will gunk up your engine for fun. Plus, I live out in the boonies and we don't have a gas tank on every corner. Heck, we don't even have corners.

Worse - most cars today have an in tank electric fuel pump, that is cooled by the fuel it's sitting in. You dramatically shorten the life of the pump when it is exposed to air. So try to never let it get below a quarter tank.

Lol - I WAS a Penn until a few years ago. We had a 100 year flood. I had 1/8 tank of gas and only 1 gas station between me and home - 12 miles away. Work sent everyone home early and I got to the gas station, where the line grew SO FAST. Took me 5.5 hours to get home - the few roads that were still open looked like parking lots. I had to let go of Penn that day and travel to the other side, where every tank is at least half full.

Nothing truer on the internet 🤣 I'm definitly Penn! My husband did the long-distance thing for 4 years. I was in LA and he was in Phoenix, so we would drive that route all the time. Gas is WAY more expensive in CA than it is in AZ (like 30+ c/gallon more), so I always made it my goal to roll into the first AZ gas station on empty. One time I almost cut it too close- the low fuel light turned on with easily 30-35 miles left to go... AT NIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DESERT. My grandpa always said "you've got 30 miles easy!" when that light came on, so I just crossed my fingers and thought of him 🤣 Thankfully, he was right, and I was able to roll into AZ on fumes and fill up with that glorious, cheap gas 😁

20-year master mechanic from Michigan here. The gas warning light comes on between 2-5 gallons left, depending on the manufacturer. See the owners manual. When the gauge reads "E," that is the bottom that the vehicle can physically read the volume of fuel left in the tank. I've seen some vehicles come in with a gauge below the E. This is actually a fault with the measurement in the component called the "fuel level sending unit." There is a reserve, but at most, it's a quart. Love your videos, thanks.

Growing up, my mom was Penn. The gas light was always on and she would always say “oh we’re fine, we have like 50 miles once the light comes on.” There was no way of keeping track how many we had already driven like how cars nowadays can show you how many miles you have left. It gave me extreme anxiety

My mom, too!! The car actually died on us when I was little but we just happened to be on the downhill side of the road and coasted into the station at the bottom of the hill. I was freaked and mom just laughed ! So I NEVER let the warning light go on! I’m scarred for life. Because of that.

She was doing what I do. She was probably basing it on her odometer. Example: if she's at 300 miles and the car can go to 350 typically, then you have 50 miles. If I'm at 325 in my car, I know I have 14 miles to get gas because I have a gallon in the tank. 😂 I haven't run out of gas, but I have coasted in if I'm really close.

I friggin LOVE IT when I hit an even number when filling up gas. Mostly because it helps my crow brain when I budget. Bonus points when the even number also matches an "as even as you can get" number of gallons, too. I get really nervous when the tank starts getting low (I've let the light come on) because growing up in cold weather, you don't want it to get below a quarter of a tank. Also, in case of the zombie apocalypse, you're going to need a full tank to flee.

Cars are to noisy do you want to be mauled by zombies? Good for fleeing at the beginning though I guess

I am Penn and hubby is Kim. When the gas light goes on, I have about 20 miles before I am in trouble. I usually gas up if the light goes on, since my kids are usually with me. The accuracy of this video was spot on.

well, factor in that whole scene on home improvement where jill taylor tells tim taylor that when the 'check engine' light comes on she's all: 'i thought it was just a warning... and... i thought it would {eventually} just become more frequent or get louder..' that whole scene is supposed to be a diss on women, based on the fact that 'we' don't concern ourselves with potential mechanical failures. in reality, ignoring engine warning signs is about hubris. or ignorance. or laziness. it's funny how men weigh heavily on the side of 'just wait: it's bait'. not trying to flame at all or at all and this has been a fun thread...

I actually read my manual. Light comes on and the car indicates 35 miles left. Manual says once indicator says 0, there is a gallon left in the tank, which means another 30 miles. In my area, that's one or two more trips, one of those to the gas station.

Hilarious! I am in the in-between category. Most of the time, I fill up between 1/4 tank and empty. Sometimes, I push the envelope. The one time I ran out of gas in my life was last year. The close call was on a recent trip when I didn't pay attention or hear the reminder, and I was frantically searching for a gas station with my sleeping child in the car. I found one, and I'll never do that again.

Lol I'm Penn on this one! I use that same line, "we can drive another 30 miles!" I use it so often that my teenage daughter now sarcastically says, "we can drive to California and back. "....we live nearly 2000 miles from CA!

I 100% agree with Penn on the wasting net hours getting gas more often!, was thinking that when she first said she needed gas at a quarter tank. Now, I have run out of gas before and pushed my truck into a side neighborhood, so I don't let it get that low... but do now know how far I can actually get when the nudging light comes on.

The low fuel light is there to prevent the fuel pump in the fuel tank from premature failure due to cavitation. Having the fuel pump replaced is an expensive repair. So it may be fun to see how far one can go once the low fuel light is on, it is DEFINATELY not good for your vehicle. The time you save not stopping for gas will be eaten up taking your vehicle to the shop and waiting to get it back. Meanwhile...the video is hilarious, good job. Go Kim!!

As a guy who loves Penn - Nope. Maybe because we were from the middle of nowhere in Michigan's UP, I grew up with a dad who said, "If it's below a quarter, it's empty, fill it up" - No one in my lineage has run out of gas, ever. Great topic.

I am reminded of that Seinfeld episode! LOL! I think Kramer was with someone trying sell him the car he was driving... I absolutely seek a gas station soon after realizing the tank was that low after I ran out of gas in the middle of a system of on ramps and off ramps without a gas station nearby.
