When you talked about the unusual application of Me3Al and showed some rockets, I thought you were going to mention its use to ignite certain liquid fueled rockets. Because kerosene and liquid oxygen do not ignite on contact at room temperature, the F-1 engines on the first stage of the Saturn V moon rocket used a mixture of trimethyl boron and trimethyl aluminum in a "hypergolic cartridge" to ignite them when the fuel first flowed into the combustion chamber to meet the liquid oxygen. Of course the rockets you showed were solid fueled so they have other ignition systems. But that makes at least two very different applications of Me3Al in rocketry.

why does the aluminium break bonds from carbon to seek out a bond with the oxygen? i did horrible at chemistry but what is the chemical reaction happening here? 2Al2(CH3)6 + 24(O2) --> 4(AlO3) + 6CO2 + 6C + 18H2 im sure there are other ways to create equal values so this is probably not the only outcome... maybe we would expect to see water too?

So, I fail to understand, by the explanation why the flame exists. If there are bonds being created, that requires energy, and should not create fire. Is it the bonds that are breaking from the carbon that gives it this energy? If so, shouldn't there be some cancellation of energy between the created and destroyed bonds?

Isnt trimethel orthosilicate used to make aerogel. I wonder if this stuff can make aluminum based aerogel.

I wonder if the graphite produced at the end has any special properties, such as containing carbon nano-tubes or graphine. It certainly appears fibrous, not at all like soot.

Interesting... It must be Al2(CH3)6 and not Al(CH3)3 because it's an electron deficient compound, since it's covalent the Al only has 6 outer electrons, bit like in BF3.
