Part 3 in the flathead tuning series. Today I'm replacing my VM28 with a TM28 carb and fabricate a new intake manifold, in order to fix my idling problems, and maybe get a little bit more performance out of it too. And balance the flywheel to hopefully get rid of the shaking.

Was so happy when I saw the notification, even more so when I finally had time to watch it! Great stuff, love the bike!

Thanks man, seems that we both got rid of the carb demons :) Didn't think it was going to be this simple, seems to be running a little too rich at idle but other than that no problems, it just worked at first try. This obviously does mean something else is going to break soon, because nothing is ever this easy when it comes to engines...

Nice to see most of the details of working on the flywheel. From the sound, it was running quite okay while idling afterwards, cool!

Yeah, it felt like I could put my coffee cup on the engine now without spilling. Made quite a difference! Hopefully the same difference on higher rpms.

I don't know if any one else already suggested but that carb is designed for a modern 4T twin cam with inclined inlet tracts. And should be inclined forward's by maybe 15-20 degrees. The main difference is in how the floats operate. You may be able to tweek the tab on the floats to compensate so you get correct fuel level in the fuel bowl. Also to be honest it seems abit big for a low rpm motor - again it is designed for a modern 4T bike that revs to 14000 rpm or more and hence draws a lot of air. This motor will give more torque right though the range with a smaller carb. But love your work. Maybe build a dyno to get the jetting right on all your crazy motors ?

Great job of balancing, and nice work on the intake! Running better and better each video. Looking forward to your "blower" video.

Thanks! I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to TIG welding but it's nice to practice on stuff like this :) I'm looking forward to that bit too but I'm a one step at a time kind of guy so it might not be for another month or two. Before that I want to try ignition timing, porting and a different cam. The frame is in pieces right now to stretch it, but hopefully back together again this weekend.

Good to see the NASA tool back in action ;) Can't say much else, always puts a smile on my face when i get a notification about one of your new videos. :)

Haha, yeah my NASA blocks came to good use ;) I'm not sure if the bearing blocks were an upgrade or a downgrade but at least now I don't have to use my NASA level to level them :)

Seems like you should tighten up the clutch springs with stiffer ones to give it a bit more stall speed? They kick in really low RPM, no?

First off, how did you get the speedo imbedded in the video? Secondly, Wow! 74kmh on a homemade minibike! That’s excellent!
@Hollaendaren
@Hollaendaren 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I actually did 95 km/h on asphalt with it, but that was sketchy as hell, it got the wobbles at top speed.. Didn't crash luckily but not going to try again.. So I decided that acceleration is a lot more fun than speed. For the speedo I use RaceChrono on my phone to log the speed data, then a program called Dashware on Windows to overlay it on the video.

As that's a stationary motor now on a moving vehicle. Why not take the fan blades off and gain some free power.
@Hollaendaren
@Hollaendaren 4 жыл бұрын
I had a reason for putting the fan back on but I can't remember what it was right now. Maybe I just wanted to see how it did with the fan first and check later if removing the fan would make any difference. I don't remember :)

@@Hollaendaren . I forgot; would have to remove the shroud from the fins too for air- flow; But I don't need to remind you of that. Fast mini bike ! :)

Love the videos. Why did you choose to add weight to the flywheel instead of lighten the aluminum on the magnet side?
@Hollaendaren
@Hollaendaren 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I did it this way because it gives me a bit more flexibility, I may need to move the magnet later because I think it'll probably interfere with the pulley for the "blower" when I get to that stage, that will probably sit behind the flywheel. So if so, weights are going to change one way or another and the balance will be off again. With this solution I can just bolt on a different counterweight.

you could also balance both the wheels with the same tool,
@Hollaendaren
@Hollaendaren 6 жыл бұрын
Yep :) But I think I need some better wheels before there's any sense in trying to balance them. These are pretty rusty unfortunately.

people never bother to balance wheels on karts scooters etc, wonder if theres any benefits at all
@Hollaendaren

Probably a little at high speed, but I think most important is to get them to run true and not wobble all over the place. I did adjust the spokes for that last year but I think the rims themselves are a bit out of balance because of all the rust, even if they are running pretty true.

Stubby little bike i see you out over the bars on launching tries to bite its own ass huh popping wheelies is fun but thats to short anyway making it longer wont hurt. Great job atb Russ.

It's kind of unpredictable right now making it hard to ride. Sometimes it gets grip and does wheelies, sometimes it digs a little trench in the road. I think it needs more power! ;)
