Part 2 in the flathead tuning series. This time I'm fabricating a lightweight aluminium "billet" flywheel. Okay, maybe it's semi-billet, it's multiple parts. It's a long one but hopefully interesting :)

I have such massive respect for people that can build something instead of paying a lot of money for the same thing that probably isn't as good. I love the build, it looks pretty bonkers already.

Thanks! And damn right I'm not going to spend 350 bucks on a flywheel if I can make my own :) it saves me a bunch of money and I get to have fun in the garage, it's a win-win situation really. Too bad your carb demons found their way here, talk about hard to ride. But this weekend it should be good to go for a proper testing session again and we'll see if I need wheeliebars on this thing :)

2STROKE STUFFING I think you should do something like this with a small four-stroke engine

After doing home mechanics on bikes and cars I could see why 2strokestuffing smokes cigars and seems to drink heavily and found myself hitting the booze to avoid hitting what I'm working on out of frustration! You seem very laid back and calm, a natural mechanic!

Alexander Jäderblom I wasn't expecting that kind of difference really :) it was a bit of a slouch off the line before because of the flywheel, now it just wants to throw me off and take off by itself ;)
@alexanderjaderblom
@alexanderjaderblom 6 жыл бұрын
Yes quite a difference, looks fun in a way but hard to ride with no idle and wanting to go where no bike has gone before by itself. But I'm sure you'll solve it :)
@Hollaendaren

I already have a new carb on it and it idles fine now :) just need to fabricate a new intake so I can actually fit my throttle cable, the new carb is a bit taller than the old one and I ran out of space.

Figured that you would have solved it already :) Did you talk about porting the head later in the first video or did I make it up/dream of it? Anyway, it's really interesting to follow along on your build and mods :)

LOL @ "It's scary now, so that's an improvement". Cool how you rebuild that flywheel. You're actually throwing up dirt now when you hit the throttle.

It's true though ;) For the record, I was already throwing up a little bit of dirt before but not this much :)

nice one but the flywheel is weight balanced?
@Hollaendaren
@Hollaendaren 6 жыл бұрын
Not yet, but close enough for testing (the incomplete fan almost makes it balanced again). And as I said in the video, I will balance it later, just wanted to see if it worked first. My balancing rig needs a bit of work and I didn't want to wait :) The engine shakes quite a bit anyway, I really can't tell a difference in shakiness compared to the stock flywheel.

I know it’s been 5y since you did this. But next time use an gm hei and an anti lock brake sensor. Then all you have to do is epoxy a small magnet into the flywheel. And I gives you variable timing

What was causing the sparks near your right foot at 30:22 ?
@Hollaendaren

I was wondering if someone was going to notice that ;) I didn't notice it myself until after I uploaded the video, so I went out and checked the flywheel today. Turned out the magnet had moved just enough to touch the coil every now and then. I put 2 extra bolts in there now with a tighter fit so it's not going to happen again.

How did you time the magnet with the keyway in the center so it will fire at the correct time?
@Hollaendaren
@Hollaendaren 5 жыл бұрын
It's been a while but if I remember correctly I made a mark on the center so I knew where the magnet was originally. Or maybe I took some photos where I could see it and compare. But basically I tried to get it in the same spot as it was on the original flywheel.

TEAMVISKAT81 Thanks! It's looking promising :) Amazing difference compared to before. Can't believe that it's so aggressive now at so low rpm. As a little spoiler for the next video I can reveal that it now idles fine. Haven't tested riding yet though, having some clearance issues with the new carb so the throttle cable won't fit.

I actually recorded the carb change but that's not much of a video because it just worked right away. But I'm going to have to reroute the intake pipe a bit for the throttle wire so that might be more interesting to watch :)

Strange Builds Inc I could machine you an aluminum flywheel, very, very similar process to what hollaendaren has done in this video, just need you to send me the original flywheel to copy the output shaft bore.

@@gallupcustomknives2293 man I really would love to talk to you about a custom billet flywheel for my Honda GX270, I really want to use the same diameter of the Honda GX200's flywheel but with the GX270's bore. I can make the coil drop-down bracket, just need your expertise on the rest. A well know company pretty much already provides this mod I'm talking about but I absolutely refuse to spend $300+ on it! Plus theirs uses a hub-to-flywheel design for adjusting timing, my coil drop-down bracket accomplishes that for me. Please please get back to me on this idea, thank you!

This engine is off a snow blower so it's meant to run at a constant rpm and not fluctuate too much when it meets some heavy snow or something. So a heavy flywheel is good there, but on a bike not so much :)
