Part 4 in the flathead tuning series. Stretching the frame a bit for hopefully better take-offs and to make space for the smog pump supercharger.
Things did not go exactly as planned....

I'd mount the rear pulley to the jackshaft on the frame and toss the backplate in the scrap bin... Also I have built some pretty unorthodox minibikes and stuff like bikes and a quad with lawnmower transmissions... I have a cvt like that but they're not made for more than like 8hp and more importantly 4k rpm you can actually pull the belt so hard into the driven pulley in "high gear" that it can bind up it's happened to me on a go kart and if it were on a bike I would have went clear over the bars.. so with that in mind and after binge watching 2tstuffing's spx my next build is gonna use just the front "variator" clutch and allow the engine to move like the spx but use a honda clone or a briggs flathead I have a few of each so I may just flip a coin

Luv following along this minibike adventure, always informative and entertaining. Some cast aluminum is more like Horseshit and Feathers, terrible to weld. 👍👍

Thanks! It's fun to mess around with it :) I'm hoping my weld will stick, definitely got the penetration but we'll see about if it wants to crack :)

Extend the shaft to the other side of frame for support

Seems like a lot of effort for a Briggs and Stratton. One of those Free Air Rotax on the shelf would go much better. HaHa!

Those are for a future project ;) I chose the Briggs because I wanted something different, haven't really messed around with 4-strokes all that much before :)

you could try and preheat the casting before welding may help you

Yeah heat definitely helped! Gonna be fun to see if it actually works, I think the odds are about 50/50 of it breaking again, so I'm going to add some backup plates.

That parts integrity has been comprised right what are the odds of it breaking again ? And what is it going to take with it when it blows? Whats your thoughts?

I'm not sure how much integrity it had to begin with ;) I was kind of expecting it to eventually bend or something but not just snap like that. I think if I put a counter bearing on the shaft that will take almost all sideways load off the plate and hopefully it will be fine again. I've ordered some material to make a new plate though just in case it doesn't work out.

BAM! Stretched a little too far - in the other sense... You can paint an "L" behind the magnumr or hercules logo for it. Unless you have some other logo for the bike already?

No logo yet, but it's still pretty tiny so XL seems a bit of an exaggeration ;) I was actually thinking of getting a new seat cover without text on it.

Putting 2 wheels on a snowblower motor with a slightly adapted roof rack could be called exaggerating too ;) I meant the "L" for Long - like Audi A6L

Aluminium is a shit material to weld, if you don't heat treat it properly it will be prone to develop cracks sooner or later and that's for good quality aluminium. I wouldn't bother with a piece like that, I would've built a new one in steel instead.

Too late, I've already welded it back together ;) After I put enough heat in it it stopped cracking on me. Also going to bolt on some reinforcement plates so at least there will be a backup if it does crack. But I definitely need to take the sideways load off that backplate if it's going to stay in one piece. The only real force on it should be pulling in the length direction of it. If it does break again, a new one it is.. Just want to get this thing going again now and welding it was the fastest solution because material to fabricate a new one is at least a week away.

Probably not until spring :/ I haven't worked on it at all and it's still broken and I just parked it for winter storage. Need to get started on the winter projects now if they're going to be done before the snow is gone. There should be new videos for a new project coming soon though :)
