A few weeks after returning from the Canning Stock Route I had the urge to do a short track on my own, to review the Land Cruiser, and to experience a slice of outback in solitude. This is the Holland Track, a three day track where the start point was less than a day's drive from my home in Perth, Western Australia. The track was a lot of fun, and makes an enjoyable story.

Andrew, the noise is a rock between the brake disc and shield. Hard to see with the wheel on. It happens to me all the time when driving thru mud or sand mixed with rocky material. I drive a Ford F-250 (Dana 60 axles) in the states. the breaking sound was the rock leaving. Yes it is a horrible squealing grinding noise and you just know something is going to break. Pull the tire next time and look for debris if it worries you enough. Alone on that track, I would have pulled the tire. Great trip. I enjoyed it and looking forward to the next video.

Agreed - stone. Happened to me on a Land Rover Discovery 4 after playing in a quarry. It was actually quite embarrassing driving around my local town with an expensive, new vehicle squealing away - sounded horrific. Cleared after a day or so as the stone broke up. Looks like a lovely track you were on. Great work!

Yep. This is why I remove the backing plates. It does not change. It is a rock Andrew.

What a wonderful way to start the new year. Having recently returned from my own expedition where I spent 4 weeks filming my trip, I’ve realised just how difficult doing the whole thing by yourself actually is. I know you’ve been doing it a long time, but I tip my hat to you Andrew, you have a knack of being able to turn anything into a thoroughly engrossing & entertaining film. Love your work! Andrew, the Discovery was a vehicle from another KZfaqr's convoy, 'Intents offroad' from memory it was down a couple of tires very quickly but still waiting for part 2 of his video to see how it faired left on the track.

I loved this vid it made me home sick. I lived in the Goldfields for 20 years and would often take the dog and just drive around the bush, and thats exactly what it looked like.

Those noise issues use to drive me crazy too. Had a old timer tell me to check for obvious issues if you find nothing obvious ignore it for 3 weeks. After 3 weeks if it's still making noise something is wrong, fix it!. Well have not had to fix anything that has been making a noise in 25 years now. Best advice ever. By the way I knew what it was once I heard it. The directional sound quality was superb!

Just wanted to say a thank you to you, Andrew. Just arrived back from the Holland track solo. Thanks to your invaluable advice, it gave me the knowledge to do the trip with confidence. Knowing how to negotiate specific challenges on the track came from all your videos I have enjoyed and absorbed the tips and procedures to get out of a lot of problems on the track. I also believe it is what you have said about knowing your vehicle and its limitations. My 2008 Ford Ranger I dare to say, makes me look good as a 4wder. Thankyou once again.

Was my first though too. I drive a lot of oil field roads in northern Alberta with my Tundra and when it gets a bit muddy you’ll get little rocks between the shield and rotors. Happens to me a lot in the rear. Have considered removing the dust shields

As always great video had similar problem in my cruiser once drove me nuts for hours as I couldn’t figure out what it was. As it turned out it was a small rock jammed in between rotar and dust shield I’m not expert but your situation sounded very similar. Keep up the good work

Hey Andrew Happy New Year. I've been waiting with baited breath to hear your opinion of the Holland track ever since you mentioned it in your C S R videos. I was a little disappointed with the quality of this video; not up to your usual standard but then realised you were doing the whole thing on your own which can't be easy. I've done the Holland four and a half times myself; the first time totally on my own and was quite surprised at the feeling of remoteness. Each time I've done the Holland I've found it totally different; as you say, a little water on the track and things get interesting real fast. Its a pity you didn't get to Cave Hill or Burra Rock before going down the Holland as the old wood line track between them is another good challenge and the wood lands are just spectacular. I look forward to your next instalment of the Holland. regards from Bigezi

Good solo trip Andrew . Yes a rock stuck in brake caliper or disc will make that noise . If you want to see how the landrover got stuck out there you can watch "intents Offroad" - Holland Track part 2 . Yes wrong tyres for the job , highway rated with thin sidewalls . Like your vids mate , a lot of experience and knowhow :-)

The hubs reminded me of some aftermarket manual hubs made for early Jeeps. Somehow, they offered a kit so you could put them on all four corners. They were known for spinning splines.

Typical stone between the disc brake. I have had this several times. terrible sound. best you can drive a bit back and then drive back to the front. and you repeat this several times. and then the stone usually comes loose. good video like always.

Just rocks in between the rotor and caliper guard, probably when you drove threw that puddle or somewhere but no damage all good.

Loved the diagnostics of the wheel noise! Great idea walking around the moving vehicle! We had rocks jammed in the brake drum in 1965 in our #VWBeetle1965 see on Flickr.. going across the old Eyre Hwy. bang bang and the stone popped out. Never had any trouble like that in #Smoky60Series.. We enjoyed the video, loved the open spaces of the Holland Track too and enjoy the same feelings. See GSWA shots by Spelio on Flickr. The thing I love the most about all of your videos is that you are just as passionate about your Troopy as I am about my Tacoma. Lol. Had exactly the same issue on the Holland track in 2016 in out troopy. Tried backing up a few times, didn’t help, drove a short distance, heard a “ping” and never heard it again. Had it happen in other places since. Stone between stone guard and disc. Regards,

Agree with the others, it’s a stone between the disc and the backing plate. My 76 series does it from time to time.

Rock in the disc. Hard braking usually helps to break them up.

Andrew, that sound is a little stone that got caught between the front brake disc, and the dust cover plate. When you reversed it most probably fell out. I've encountered it twice. Strangely enough both times with an Isuzu bakkie at construction sites ☺☺👋👍

I found your point at about 8:15 regarding automatic hubs very interesting! Patrol auto hubs are notorious for playing up after a while, perhaps not manually locking them has something to do with that.

That noise I’ve had similar but on early 90s BMW E36 where in the rear discs where stones get stuck and this is really small stones have got in behind the disc where the small handbrake shoes are. And some times the noise goes or 15 min job removing disc for little stone size of a Apple pip

That noise is why I've taken the brake shields off of my Rovers. I would always get a little rocks stuck in them.

Andrew little sand particles hooks up between the back plate and the brake disc, creates that type of funny scriching noises, it once happened to me, I was driving a L/Rover 110 tdi, it is disc brakes all round, I was driving in a bandit prone area and was actually becoming late, the road was muddy and we were 102 kms to our night stop place, and I was carrying team of donors, and I couldn't go under the vehicle to check out, I stopped hurriedly went under the vehicle and nothing was visible, it produce a sound and went off and the noise disappear for good

PS. Have had that noise before too from lodged rocks and barbed wire out on family ranches in West Texas on Fords & Toyota trucks. Also will occasionally get squeaky breaks from the Caleche gravel roads.

Great Video thanks Andrew! Out of curiosity, have you as yet, had to do a DPF regeneration burnoff in the Landcruiser in the bush? I believe it’s done manually in the 79 series......

Just a little bog hole brake. Reversing while leaning on the brakes usually pops it out.

I can't wait to buy my first overland/off-road vehicle and explore Ontario and the rest of Canada. My first vehicle will most likely be a 3rd gen Toyota 4Runner or a 2nd gen Nissan Pathfinder R50. Brake related sound, I think it's either a rock rubbing in-between the disc guard and the disc, or bent guard rubbing on the disc or brake pad glue has given way and the friction surface has fallen off and it's grinding mental on metal as pads always have little drag, I diagnose this stuff everyday as a mechanic but It's not good when in the outback alone with no spare parts!! :( Great video I would love to be able to do what you do.

Stone in the brakes, first time that happened to me I was freaking out, then heard something rattle and ping out as I was driving. Local consensus was it was a stone too.

.. common problem. Had it happen a couple of times.. stone likely caught in backing plate. If you get that again take the wheel off !

The sound in the front wheels would be a rock stuck in between the disc brake and stone guard protecting the disc.
