Check out the (NEW) Holley Sniper EFI 2 system here: holley-team.com/4629i3Q
The new system features all the original features plus enhanced driver feel and NEW improved ECU! Good for 650hp NA
The 1250 Super Sniper EFI from Holley is finally installed. Here’s an honest review of the install including 3-4 things I’d fix but why you should ultimately consider this for your next car or truck project.

Good info and clearly delivered. Bought a 74 Challenger a year ago and guy threw in Sniper EFI that he could not figure out (that's what he told me anyway). I guess he pulled it off and stuck his 4-barrel back on. I dug through 4-5 boxes as he scattered the stuff in a bunch of boxes and it appears to be all there minus a temp sensor. I am currently installing it after doing a ton of rust repair. Videos like yours are really super helpful in helping avoid a few "gotchyas"! Thanks for posting.

I just watched your video, I installed the Sniper 4150 on my '70 GTO and the only issue I had was the external pump (pure junk) and the coolant sensor reading too high. I replaced the external pump with an in-tank unit and didn't do anything about the CTS, now that I have the part number I'm gonna change it out, thanks for that number. I fabricated the throttle linkage and I'm happy with that. I tried the progressive linkage and even after changing the the ECU to where mine opened (41%), it ran like shit, so I went back to a 1 to 1 linkage and extended it, the car runs great now. Good video dude.

The Sniper EFI should be engineered to use the standard fuel lines, fuel pump and float level fuel system while using only a pulse fuel injector controlled electronically. That would reduce the installation hassle to the oxygen sensor, the throttle body EFI and the display/computer. That would encourage more people to do the conversion.

I just installed my tank last week. Just wanted to say that the instructions call for the Aviation Form a gasket on the gasket and NOT the fitting threads. Maybe the instructions got updated but mine says to use a fuel proof thread sealant. I got Permatex 5735 Lock and Seal which is fuel safe. Haven’t run it yet. Good video.

if you call holley they will send you a different sensor at no charge. Also in the v4 software you can put a offset in for the sensor to make it read correct. If you put the sensor in the head it will read high. It should be located in the intake. Also play around with the software and you don't need the linkage. you can tune out all the problems you are having. i have the same system on a 69 camaro and had the same issues. after playing with the software it runs like a new car. mine has been trouble free for the last 3 years.

callofgeorge i appreciate it! One more bit of advice (i havent had a chance to make a video) but if you add an extender on your throttle linkage it will allow you to open all 4 butterflies at once but reduce the pedal effort/sticking you experience without it. Holley makes an extension linkage for the Sniper or you can drill a few holes in a piece of thin steel and make your own with some 1/4-28 bolts + nuts

I had a ‘81 suburban 1/2 ton 4x4 back in the day…it had a black goodwrench 290hp replacement motor in it ……other than 33” tires it was stock with the garbage quadrajunk carb….this was back in the late 90’s before we had these fancy efi bolt on kits….even then the guys at work were amazed when id have my cuzzin place bets that the big beast could do doughnuts on dry asphalt…..you should have seen the look on there faces when that big ol thing came around on the 2nd rotation and got all that mass swinging….man that truck was fun and NEVER left me stranded, too bad some tweakers stole it…..few years later i had a ‘86 3/4 ton 4x4 and there was no comparision that thing was junk it had a 350/th400 combo as opossed to the 350/th350 combo in the ‘81….i really miss that ‘81 though….i ended up donating the ‘86 for a tax write off..soon after i gotta ‘72 c/10 longbed fleetside…350/th350 combo…did all the bolt ons and put loud ass headers and dual glasspacks , rims, chrome,chrome, and more chrome…once again the tweakers stole it on a loud stormy rainy night…they must have pushed it down the street some distance before they started it and drove off…..about a week later i gotta call from the police dept. saying they found it stripped down to the hubs in knee deep sand….the tow truck got stuck trying to recover it and they had to get a second one out there to assist and get them both out…then had the nerve to try and charge me for 2 recovery vehicles upon release at the tow yard…wtf….needless to say i had spare steel wheels/tires and tinwork /carb for the motor, got hef running in the tow yard hours later and drove it outta there…it wasnt the same, with the valve covers being stolen sand had gotten into the motor and caused it to smoke like crazy…in short the truck had been violated in a major way…i ended up selling it to a father/daughter team as a project and she was thrilled when i started it for them and she heard how loud it was…..shortly after i got another c/10 longbed fleetside this time a ‘68 327/th350, at this time LS swaps were a thing and i ended up pulling the 327 and selling it as a whole running motor locally for $400, mind you i bought the truck for $1000 so at this point im winning, put an ASA cammed 5.3 in with 4.8 flat tops and a 3000stall converter for the th350 with the 3.73 rear that truck was a rocket, put dual glasspacks on to piss off the nieghbors and that it did, enjoyed it for about a year but my wife had a cow every time i started it cause the windows on the house would rattle and she sensed the nieghbors hated it cause it was loud and obnoixious looking….so i took the hint and sold it for a nice little profit….2years later i was surfin craigslist and found jackpot…a ‘73 c/10 shortbed fleetside straight 6 with granny 4 spd non running…he wanted $5k….i went to go see it and pointed out EVERY flaw…i got him down to $3500…..and he even trailered it home for me….not even 1 week later i had a built LS installed and running with a 3000 stalled th350 in it with the factory 3.73 rear this thing was a missle…i replaced the hood ,doors, and fenders with new pieces and currently in final stages of prep for paint… not to mention i added a vortech v-3sci centrifugal supercharger……its in primer now and ready for paint …i plan on keeping this one only cause the value on shortbed c/10’s is ridiculous….its ran by a holley terminator x just like my 370” lq9/ls3 headed LSA supercharged nova…im building a 408 stroker for the nova and when thats done the 370” will go into the c/10……fun fun fun….cant go wrong with a chevy truck…my daily is a LMM duramax lifted 9” on 37”s…and with only a tune it will smoke most cars on the road

I have installed 3 black Holley sniper units. All 3 were replaced because of the same issue. They sprayed the black powder coating inside of the unit. the easiest way to see is to take off the left side cap that the return fuel line connects to. then pull out the diaphragm that's behind it. You will see it has black powder coating inside of it where it is exposed to gas and it will peel. 2 of the 3 just wouldn't run after the screen on the diaphragm clogged the 3rd saw fuel pressure issues and just went WOT on me with zero throttle control, that was scary. If you have a black unit check that out, Holley replaced all mine with a brand new one but they send out a new one with the same issue. I would recommend not getting powder coated units for replacement.

yeah im probably going back to a carb. i have the edelbrock estreet efi on a pontiac 428 and its good never gave me any serious problems. its been a few years. the only problems were a leaking fuel pressure sensor and header flange gasket soon as i figured that out it ran real good. but i cant get it to idle below 900 rpm. tried everything i can think of. set the throttle stop below 900 and then it wil hunt continually and there are no vac leaks. possible bad throttle pos sensor. the tablet it comes with is cool but its bluetooth and the comp doesnt have enough signal strength to pick up from inside the car. so theres also that. i think ill just put the 850 back on it. so much simpler

Great review! I was going to do a Megasquirt or Haltech on my 75 Datsun 280z that I’m Turbo’ing soon... but I started looking at the Super Sniper 650 to work with a single carbureted intake and a bonnet / carb hat, with a front mount intercooler. Is the tuning as “self tuning” as they say? Or will a tuner be required to get a solid tune?
@truckandroll989
@truckandroll989 3 жыл бұрын
Dan Lombardi honestly on a mild application the self tune is adequate but i wouldnt trust it on a forced induction application. Technically i dont have any experience with how well it learns with a turbo but id budget for a tune. Also make sure the stock fuel pump os sized to support your power goals. For example my Super Sniper 1250 can only support around 550hp on the stock fuel Pump. It has the injector but you need to upgrade the pump.

Thanks for watching! Yes i used the supplied regulator and had no issues. I do not have a standalone. So no issues with the dual plane per se but i get some whistling noises that im told could be solved by using a 4 hole spacer. I have wideband oxygen sensors in each exhaust collector and i do see some variation between the sides. Im not sure if that is just the nature of the system/my motor or the intake but it really hasn’t caused an issue

Steven Shelhamer i believe if you search Holley Sniper linkage they offer several options. Otherwise get a stock linkage from a 750cfm double pumper and you can bend it to the progressive linkage setting of your liking by checking at what TPS percentage the secondaries open at. Gday mate form Australia. Thanks for the video and info. So I have a Sniper system to install. I have the Throttle progressive linkage to retrofit. I had heard about the temp sensor problems. So what replacement sensor did you use again and where could you source a similar one???? Also the linkage you talk about is this for using a cable system???? I am not using an in-tank fuel pump sadly but have the Holley fuel kit. Anyway good honest info. By the way, how much better was the engine after fitting???? Better starts, economy, driveability, acceleration?????
@truckandroll989
@truckandroll989 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! So a couple of things. The cable setup i have is for a throttle cable and not linkage. Since this video i have actually removed the progressive option. The reason being is that while the progressive linkage improves low speed drivability it hurts performance. What i have done is install a small lever arm where they throttle cable attaches. By mounting it higher it acts like a small fulcrum and makes the pedal effort more manageable while still opening all four butterflies. This would be my go to option after driving it for a while. Maybe i will make a video showing what i fabricated. Biggest improvements would be economy, consistent cold starts, and overall consistency to drivability. Performance before and after were similar in terms of all out performance which is as to be expected. With regards to the CTS i had to search on the forums and picked up a sensor from a local parts store. Sorry i dont remember the part number off hand

No reason that it couldnt work well. Submerged fuel pumps typically last longer due to them being kept cool by the fuel. But as long as you can keep your pump from starving, ideally cool, and dont have a block downstream filter making it work harder than it should you should be ok.

Would you recommend the in tank pump no matter what? I’ve already ordered the kit with the in-line pump and just wanted to see if this system will work well for for my truck. If I can save pulling the bed or dropping the tank I’d like to but if it’s going to improve the functionality that much I’ll do it. What’s your thoughts?
@truckandroll989
@truckandroll989 3 жыл бұрын
The reduction in headache installing an inline pump is pretty huge. Id say if you already ordered it just make sure you mounted it in a spot where it always has suction, is away from heat, properly grounded, and a large enough cable to power it. Do all that and im sure it will work great for you. O and dont forget filters :)

I put the Quadrajet Sniper on my ‘76 K5 with a 400. I also did the in tank pump. Happy with it after a year but I think I’m missing something. I still have the HEI distributor. Should I get the hyperspark system? Another $475 on top of $2000 spent to get where I am. Worth it?
@truckandroll989

Craig Fulton thats a tough one. If you are computer savvy and like tuning id say yes. The biggest benefit for me is how much advance i can add in at low rpm/low load that i could never simulate with an HEI. If you aren’t terribly concerned with fuel mileage and think it runs great as is maybe save the $500. If you HEI goes or you are planning on replacing the distributor anyway than go Hyperspark.

Tony there are various models of the Holley Sniper depending on your power level, whether you plan to supercharger/turbocharge, nitrous etc. The super sniper currently retails for $1500. In addition you will need the fuel system to support it. As far as power goes you wont necessarily gain hp with EFI but it should (if properly setup) increase drive-ability, cold start performance, fuel mileage, etc.

I'm considering going to this on my square body suburban. I currently have TBI on it and it's got a few issues hiccups when taking off cruising on the highway it has a hard time picking itself up when throttle applied and fuel mileage sucks about 9 mpg. Have you noticed any improvement on fuel economy with the sniper?
@truckandroll989

If you already have TBI my advice would be to skip the sniper. Spend a little extra and do multiport EFI. I have a 95 with TBI in my Sierra and it honestly runs good. I also had to troubleshoot quite a bit, replace filters, disassemble and clean the TB and injectors, etc. As far as mpg i was going EFI around the same time as adding performance parts. I can tell you it got close to 15mpg driving from LA to SLC. Thats a climb too (sea level to 4500’). If you are dead set on the sniper definitely budget for a dyno tune to really dial it in. However, like i said i think multiport efi would be the way to go for you. There are bo drawbacks other than price

Todd Sizemore prior to dyno tuning id say it was inherently lean. That got straightened out after final tuning. Id say if you are running a 750cfm it would Be an improvement if your engine wants the additional airflow. As I recall the super sniper is between 800-850cfm. At wot fuel injection and carb are similar in terms of power output. Carb benefits from the ability of cooling the incoming air charge. I guess i suspect it depends on your current carb’s ability to flow the required amount of air.

Did you see any noticeable improvements in mpg and cold starting
@truckandroll989
@truckandroll989 4 жыл бұрын
Rory Mckee i haven’t had a chance to put hard miles on it to compare mpgs. With my previous Holley 670 carb I was getting around 14mpg highway cruising around 75mph. This was measured between California and Salt Lake City which is pretty much uphill the whole way (sea level to 4300ft). My AFRs with the carb were dialed but I certainly wasn’t giving it enough cruise timing. I think that’s a big benefit of the Holley with Hyperspark. My seat of the pants dyno tells me that with efi the throttle response is crisper. Additionally I’d argue cold starts are better. However with a properly tuned choke your cold starts shouldn’t be an issue. A definite improvement is drivability when cold. You had to feather gas with the carb until the engine warmed up. That’s completely gone now with the Holley. Hope that helps.

Start up is great. It reacts to weather changes much better than a carburetor. Throttle response is good but some tuning is required. Specifically, whether you want a progressive style throttle or racier 1:1 linkage. The latter is preferable for performance but can include a stiff pedal. Some of my videos cover how to fix that. All in all if this is just a weekend or occasional use car Id spend my time tuning s carb and save the money. If this is your DD and you need it to get you to work every day i would consider it. Great video....thanks for explaining the issues you had. So, I've been researching this for a while and I want to install a Sniper unit on my 427 BBC. Which unit do I need to get...Super sniper 1250 or Sniper 650? Currently, I have 450hp but I do want to do a top end kit and probably a 200 shot of nitrous which should put my hp levels over the Sniper 650 unit. What hp level did your motor originally have? Did you have any issues running the 1250 at the lower hp level?

Good question. I would say to be safe go 1250. If we talk flywheel horsepower, which is how the units are rated, im between 500-550hp. Stock was about 390hp. I went with the Super Sniper since it had added features for power adders. That may have changed with newer software updates but you’ll want to be sure the one you get has a timing retard feature to coincide with your nitrous. I had no issues running mine at a lower power level. My biggest ongoing woe is the throttle can be touchy. Ive gone back to a non progressive linkage with a custom adapter i fabbed up. From a performance standpoint the linear throttle is better in my opinion but the initial pedal tip in is stiff on your foot.

We're the lines all long enough! I find most of these kits always come up a couple inches shorter than what I need

So electrically yes everything was fine. The Fuel lines could have stood to be maybe a foot longer or so but i was able To make it all work and haven’t had any chafing issues in the year or so ive ran it.

For one you way too low on horsepower for the super sniper if you don’t have at least 550 your gonna have that problem with the amount of motor that system is designed for you wouldn’t need the progressive linkage as much

No Joke Racing its actually seeming like the opposite. Check out some of the newer videos. At WOT the MAP sensor is still reading a small amount vacuum indicating its restrictive. Ive since swapped to the standard linkage but lengthened it to its easier to control. That seems like the preferred setup over the progressive linkage.

No way would i want to deal with these "small" issues. You've already worked through them but in the moment your screwed over and over until its figured out

Yea i feel like no system is perfect. Even a perfectly function system like this is still “throttle body injection”. It would certainly Be more wires and more costly but a true multi port sequential fuel injection system would Be ideal.

The first two problems can be resolved within the software. But unless you know the software very well you will get nowhere. The self-learning thing is a scam. You need to take this to a tuner that has a Dyno and it might take all day and he will create a map and it will probably cost $1,000 at least. This whole Holley sniper crap claim is pretty much as deep in doo doo as CNN
