You said what everyone thinks but is too scared to say for fear of being swarmed by mindless fans so respect for that. That being said the standard which a game like hollow knight has is such that an "imperfect hollow knight" for lack of better words is better than some "perfect" games (games with less "flaws") just purely due to the potential it had due to its plot, worldbuilding, art, music etc... I feel like the criticisms themselves were valid enough besides maybe the path of pain reward part - it's just a fun challenge that gives a bit of lore similar to p5 honestly (although it has been talked about on this channel of p5 is fun or not which I personally would say it is granted it can be a bit of a long-term project). Also this criticism coming from someone who did every boss radiant including stuff like markoth and zote does feel weird since that gives literally no rewards and isn't really anything in terms of additional content as having a setting where the boss kills you in one hit doesn't really change the gameplay at all even if the badge is a little satisfying. For geo I'd say this one it is far easier to understand opposing viewpoints but for me I like the fact that getting enough geo to buy things isn't really a massive grind since only somewhat fun way to obtain a lot of geo is to run the colosseums a bunch and other ways are just even more grindy and repetitive with no fun challenge to offer. Still, I can see how it'd be frustrating if you've been farming a bunch of geo expecting it would have an use just to find out that you have everything that can be bought. Hollow knight does have other flaws too obviously such as the game not really utilizing the platforming aspect besides white palace. I find hollow knight platforming really fun but white palace is the only one that does act as some sort of a skillcheck. Dream warriors in general are quite boring boss design with only 1-2 attacks and almost none of them really engaging the player and just being a bullet hell of varying difficulty. Savequitting does also ruin the idea of steel soul making it pretty trivial and removes the challenge which in turn does remove some of the satisfaction from the completion even if it was done without savequits. To bring up one more while the charm system is a lot of fun and a good amount of effort and creativity was put into it, the meta is really centered about a few charms being a gigantic power boost while a lot don't really effect the combat experience making build variety far less good than it could be. Now that I have given these criticisms as I feel like from the tone of the video that I somehow have to prove that I do see the game having faults as well I would like to say that hollow knight still is my favourite game I have played and a 10/10 for me just in terms of how great the experience was anyways and comparing it to other titles from the genre. It isn't perfect but it is an amazing game. Now what I am still somewhat confused about is the fact why this video had to be made in the first place. Is the youtube comment section really that hell-bent on hollow knight being perfect in a literal sense with no flaws and the punishment for saying anything negative being crucifiction for any sin committed against the game or what? I just feel like even if people claim that the game is "perfect" making a 10 minute video where it takes like 5 minutes of the video just to try to explain the obvious fact that there's no such thing as a perfect video game does feel condescending. I did watch the video fully and do acknowledge that some form of criticism by the hardcore fans of the game was the catalyst for making this but if people who truly believe in a game being perfect in a literal sense do exist can their minds be changed? I actually think a lot of what you mentioned, whilst being a downside in some ways, can be a benefit in others - which I believe is why a game cant be perfect (the you cant have your cake and eat it idea) for example, i actually like the fact that some charms are much better than others - the more interesting charms, such as elegy or weaversong, are worse, which creates another balancing choice you have to make, and also you have to use charms and discover which is better, which is fun, but i see how it is a disadvantage as well, like how everyone ends upnwith the same boring shaman quick slash strength build late game, which ends up being boring. also i just realised this comment was like a single sentence long lol😅

ok the issues you talk about arent flaws : geo currency is useless in endgame : well yes but i dont see the problem i mean it is not like you gonna grind ennemies endgame rancid egg are useless : not for noobs some boss sucks : yes if you are experienced but not if you only know little about videogames (but i agree uumuu is shitty) path of pain is absurdly well hidden and the reward suck : well considering how well hidden and hard it is i think this section is for those who are really passionate and skill at the game and it is why the reward is lore infected crossroads : agree there are actually better critiscm to do like it is annoying to grind at the beggining or the fact that nothing is indicated but all of this is subjectif and yes there is no perfect games

I think the fanbase needs to chill out, it's starting to resemble a lot the undertale one years ago and made me leave Hollow Knight fan groups because of some obnoxious people, who sadly are the loudest. I've seen a lot of people have issues with the game, and I realize is subjective, some don't like the gameplay feel, or the up to interpretation story, which is a big turn off when the fandom acts like their idea of the story is the correct one, even team cherry said that they don't want to talk anything about the lore just to not discredit someone's interpretation of it. I'm saying this because I see people critizing some aspect of the game and a lot of people get defensive and pasive-agressive like: "sounds like a skill issue" "you're wrong" "you're the problem not the game". Also I think some of the fanart part of HK fandom is kinda weird with the shipping and stuff, maybe that's just me Anyways, I really liked the game, spent hundreds of hours on it, thankfully without looking anything up on the internet, soooo good game, the internet kinda ruined it a little bit for me, but still one of my favorites of the last decade for sure

For real, thank you for making this excellent critique piece. As great as it is, Hollow Knight has garnered an untouchable status that makes it seem like it is flawless in every way. Is funny how we criticize other games because "we love them", but can't articulate complaints for games like these. Is a fantastic game, but I'm glad you called out things like bad bosses.

I agree. The Hollow Knight fandom is way too overprotective. I looked through some negative reviews of the game once and even the slightest complaints always had the same replies. “Skill issue” and “git gud”. My favorite game is Rain World and even though i love it, objectively i would only give a 7/10 because it has a lot of wierd bugs. Examples: centipedes, spiders, flies, mosquitos etc. Jokes aside it does have a lot of flaws. There’s some really wierd AI glitches that happen pretty commonly(i’m looking at you raindeer and miros birds). The game also doesn’t really respect the players time. You need a lot of patience and it can get really frustrating at times. Most players gave up in the first few areas because the game litterally tells you nothing. You have to figure everything out yourself. But in my opinion that what makes the game so amazing and immersive. It tells you how to walk and jump and just throws you in. The story and lore can get really confusing too. (Sorry for bad english)

I think your points pretty much sum up the games flaws. It definitely isn't perfect but gets pretty close. I'm sure silksong will get even closer.

It is perfect in one area, value for your buck, no really in my country on steam it is like 1/4 of a nintendo game and that's not even talking about when it is on sale and the dlc being free

I think one of the most important reasons why games can't be perfect, is that if a game was 'perfect' it would logically be the best game in every possible aspect. Hollowknight has amzaing combat and platforming. Some people could even argue that it has 'perfect' combat or platforming, better than any other game, but when it comes to story and especially character, you're kidding yourself if you believe hollowknight holds up compared to games like rdr2 and witcher 3. And even in topics like combat, there's so much to break the topic down into. Hollowknight doesn't have the best gunplay, becuase adding guns would make the immersion worse. It's simply impossible to have everything. I do believe though, that it is possible to make a 'flawless' game, that sets out to do exactly what it claims to do, without flaws. I don't think Hollowknight is completely flawless, but there are games that I believe are flawless (take the game 'Nothing' on steam for an example). But to call that perfect is obviously not true.
