Always use subtitles and don't rely on dubbing. They don't have many great live action actors but they got competent voice actors. If you like the anime try and read the manga, like book adaptations, they leave something out sometimes when the animators and mangaka are not on the same page.

Frieren is someone Hollywood WISH they could make but have lost the capacity. A female lead that is at once extremely powerful and impressive, stoic and aloof, charming, and vulnerable and emotional. A mighty heroine who can be super silly and comedic without losing deep and intense dramatic tones to her. A powerful woman with romance interwoven into her life intricately, neither alienating it nor being solely a romance girl. A Gandalf-level almost alien figure who's more human and humanized than any modern MCU lead, an inhuman person dealing with her inhumanity and acquired humanity. An almost motherly figure to her new followers. Someone who your heart aches for and wants to love. And all that, for almost no budget.

you're spot on. i think the first episode alone is a perfect microcosm of how the rest of the series will go. i understand and empathize with characters in this series after knowing them for only 3 or 4 minutes. that first episode has such a tall task that requires you to care about the hero party after spending only 10 minutes or so with them. and if you don't, the rest of the episode (and series for that matter) would not hit as hard.

She doesn't make the same mistake again, and now appreciates them much more than before. Celebrating what you've lost, by appreciating what's in front of you. It is truly remarkable storytelling. the thing about demons is that they're NOT evil. the way how they think makes them to look evil for other races, but they just don't understand things. they don't raise thier children, so they have no concept of family. they're lonely race, so they don't understad the value of someone's life, only thier own. btw, they were presented as "predators" but there was a moment one of them were eating apple in ep.8, so they prob omnivores. thier biggest problem is that thier lack of undersstanding other life value turns any attempts of coexisting to simple making it worse. also they too hierarchical tocoexist in society with other races, because they will never listen someone who appears to be weaker for them.

Himmel put up statues throughout their journey so people in the future and Frieren can remember them. A dwarven knight protected a village for decades simply because it was his late wife's home. An old Imperial mage was portrayed, through word of mouth, as a ruthless conniving politician who used subterfuge to get rid of his opponents. @@kaelthunderhoof5619When he called Frieren "young", you get a feel for just how far back in time elves lived, and even Frieren mentions "the age of mythology" when the goddess last appeared. Something else needs to be praised here: the general storytelling. As someone else put it, you can watch the show on mute, and would still know almost all of what's going on because so much of the story is told in visuals rather than characters over explaining. I saw this myself a few episodes in. The show doesn't need to tell you everything because it knows the viewers also have eyes and brains of their own. To me, storytelling like that shows a great respect for its audience.

Frieren will be hailed as one of the top 5 anime of this decade and all for the right reasons. Everything it does, it does wonderfully, when there is action it's outstanding, when there is exposion it's not boring, the comedy is funny, the characters and their interactions are a delight, even the minor characters that only show up for an episode or so are very memorable. it is lighthearted yet quite melancholic at the same time and the animation is quite the feast for the eyes.

An actual likable female character who isn't an edgy douchebag for no reason and isn't Mary Sue #69000? Hollywood should take notes! Edit: The "Mary Sue" part in my comment was honestly vague. Yes, she is overpowered AF (albeit done right*), but what I'm referring to is her flawed understanding of humans. She is apathetic when it comes to the finite life of a human. 100 years is like 10 days for her, but as time moves on, she learns to cherish the finite lives of humans. That aspect is what I really like about her - she slowly rectifies that flaw and opens various enclosed emotions that are foreign to her

Himmel is very charismatic but also has deep complexities you learn over time.
@dychostarr
@dychostarr 3 ай бұрын
I think what helped Himmels popularity is both the reveal of his achievements (the sword for those that know) and using flashbacks to HELP tell the story and not as filler or off screen power ups. The sword reveal simply was amazing for me, it's such a small detail to change to tell the story but was so effectively used. I was happy knowing this was getting a anime and I'm twice or thrice shocked how well it's doing between quality and reception considering how Shounen bottlenecked popularity polls for so long.

"She isn't smug" Have you seen her holding a bottle of clothes-dissolving potion!? Jokes aside, Sousou no Frieren is a story about connecting to people, and in order to make a narrative like that, the characters must be people we want to feel connected to. That means they have to be humans (or any other race), and not walking mouthpieces for the writers to insert their politics! All the characters must have their passions, interests, dislikes, fears, worries, talents, desires and conflict is naturally born from how their personalities clash with each other. This is a story Hollywood writers could never make because they never connect with anyone, they only look at themselves and want to force everyone else to bend down to their world view! And that's why Hollywood sucks, because it is not about the self, it's about the whole, the whole that they refuse to acknowledge exists!

Frieren is pretty much one of the oldest, most powerful mages in her world just meandering around a peaceful, post-Demon Lord realm like a max level MMO player farting around in low level zones. She knows how to obliterate any threat that comes her way and at no point was I saying, "This is a Mary Sue." She's just been around that long and so she knows her stuff, and the story takes so much time establishing how she got so powerful while still showing she likes the grind rather than having everything handed to her. She's basically Jack Reacher, and it's great.

Indeed, besides the fact she had a teacher and master 1000 years before the begining of the story; she cant be compared to Hollywood's mary sue's, who take them the next instant that they receive their power or the script requires them to be superior to perfectly achieve their new, untrained, uncontrollable power Even Loki was well constructed to that situation when he acquired his timeslip power, it took him most of the second season to understand and thousands and possibly hundreds of thousands to perfect, to mold to his needs and to reach beyond himself Hollywood still has potential, but for the time being its being muddled by self insertion and activism

What ultimately makes any character interesting is their weakness. Characters must have some sort of flaw or weakness to overcome. The main issue of the MSheU (and other modern Hollywood shows of the like) are that main lead female characters have no weaknesses or flaws, and any obvious flaws they do have are written as if they are actually strengths or noble attributes. The writers give plot armor to these characters and make no attempt to mask simple contradictions in reality. Comparing She Hulk to Frieren, She Hulk did almost nothing to warrant her job, instantly knows how to be a Hulk, sleeps around with countless men, and uses her powers to mostly benefit herself. Frieren, on the other hand, uses her powers to help others who are less powerful than herself. Her strength was cultivated over hundreds of years and she can still be hurt. Her flaws are used to build her character - she flippantly goes about her life until someone special to her dies - that finality to his life leads her to question herself and respect the relationships she grows moving forward.
@Alexander_Kale
@Alexander_Kale 3 ай бұрын
"What ultimately makes any character interesting is their weakness" - No, it isn't, and I am getting tired of this nonsense being repeated. What makes a character interesting is the story the author chooses to tell with them. Characters are not interesting because of their flaws. Frieren's whole story starts because EVERYONE else has a weakness that she herself LACKS, that being mortality. This nonsense about flaws is just Todd Macfarlane all over again telling us that Superman is a boring character because he is such a boyscout. No, he isn't. You can absolutely tell an amazing story about a character without flaws. Superman isn't made interesting by the fact that he has a weakness to kryptonite. Saitama's weird character isn't a flaw. Aragorn is interesting because he is inspiring, because of his STRENGTHS. Boromir's story is engaging because of its tragic elements, not because he is "weak" in some way. Going on from this, the MSheU isn't boring because their female characters are "without flaws". Captain Marvel for example has plenty of flaws. She is arrogant, unlikeable, lacks self reflection and humility. It's a boring film because the writers are hacks who fail to make these characters do anything engaging and do not give them a sensible story arc that makes use of their intrinsic characteristics and personalities. Another example from anime is the 1993 show "Moldiver". the very intro blurb tells us that the main character has invented a machine that makes him invincible. It is a story about a character who cannot lose and it is nevertheless one of the most HILARIOUS shows I have ever watched.

There are many themes to take from the show but one thing I really like how Frieren acts as a conduit for the will of the people she has once met in her life. She's not just poweful because she is a long-lived mage. She's powerful because all the friends she made in her life have made her a better person and she will go on to influence events and people later her in life. In a sense, the deeds and wishes of other people will echo far into the future through her actions and presence.

I am truly looking forward to every new episoe of Frieren. It is such a sweet, nice, slightly melancholic show. Sort of like a comfort show, but with a hint of sadness.

I think she is overpowered, but she is so humble and down to earth. She only fights when she needs to. You start to anticipate the fights, but it isn't the only thing that defines the show. It's definitely a must watch show.

So she's basically one of those old master kind of characters who don't fight until it's absolutely necessary. Eh, doesn't it get boring after a while? I hate OP characters because there's no growth, only exposition.

@n4ughty_knight It's about the journey, but also, it's about building relationships and mortality. There is action, but it is paced very well, in my opinion, but it isn't the main aspect of the show.

She only seems overpowered right now. Yes she is very powerful, but even in the show she has admitted that there are far stronger out there.

The timing of this is so ironic, because as it happens I've been binge-watching a _lot_ of anime for the past couple months now... (Just this past Sunday in fact, I watched 3 _"Urusei Yatsura"_ movies back-to-back & I've also been watching a lot of the original 80s series as well...) _"Frieren"_ I'm not familiar with; I shall have to look that up... But for the old throwbacks like me who like the older stuff, "Dirty Pair" is coming out on BluRay this December! 😊

"Frieren" I'm not familiar with; I shall have to look that up..." Seriously, it's a masterpiece. Actually one of the greatest stories ever told, anime or otherwise. It's right up there with Mushoku Tensei.

It is a dogshit show dude. If you are not socially stunted, it is a genuine waste of runtime. I can not stress this enough.

I looked it up the first time you mentioned it gundam, i even learned the guitar intro in the second OP, Yorushika is one of those bands i listened to without any anime OP or ED songs, and to find them in frieren is crazy their albums are usually about loss and life, so its fitting with frieren.

Since Drinker's too busy to review anime, Gundam should start a mini-series reviewing anime like Feiren. He's already done videos about Cowboy Bebop and Berserk.

@@scuffeddeimos It has the typical woke formula: Strong independent wahmen Mary Sue, all men are bad; "European colonization is bad" message; and racial issues. Here's an example: The protagonist, Mizu, fakes her gender because women can't be samurai (historically, that's a lie) so the blind sword maker takes her in. She's able to learn sword styles just by looking at men training their kata which doesn't make sense at all. Maybe it's because she's a woman.
