Gundam rivals Star Wars in scope, so I'd say that franchise is a must watch for fans of it. And speaking of women in tv shows, even the original in 79 had some great competent female characters like Sayla, Mirai, Frau, Matilda, and even Kycilia

As one might imagine from my pfp I am a Macross fan. But UC is the only time line for Gundam. Origin is amazing and I loved Hathaway. I will try Stardust Next.

I remember watching this back in the early 2000s during the Adult Swim run. This and 8th MS sold me on Gundam after being mildly interested after seeing Wing a few years back. Especially after a certain national event canceled the original run of 0079 back on Toonami in 2001 and blue balled me the ending for years. It's not all bad since that led me to learning about Bittorrent when it was later invented like two years later and I grabbed every last fansub of UC I could back then.

The Greatest Thing about Having a Giant Backlog of the Old Classics when you get a taste for them is that you'll never run out of them because there are so many things from the World of Yesteryear. And the more people that go back to the Past reflects a Bigger Failure in Modern Entertainment. It's also a Sentiment that keeps rising in Every Generation.

I love seeing Gundam talk anime about Gundam. You can just hear the happiness in his voice. I would love to just nerd out and talk anime with him.

This is actually the series that introduced me to Gundam its a badass series and highly recommended for people who haven't watched any Gundam series. I also LOL @ the timeline universe that's actually why I didn't go full throttle on Gundam to many universes with different stories that dont even go together kinda like jojos bizarre adventure.

Not mentioning Gundam Thunderbolt despite being OVA is such a crime bruh. It's practically War in The Pocket & 0083 of a more modern time 2015s. Mature theme, Adult MCs, the harsh reality of war, etc. Still waiting a new movie/season of Gundam Thunderbolt, especially when the manga at its final arc.

Gundam 0083 is fantastic. Gundam 0080 is basically, "Oh, you think war is an adventure? Here's a little taste of it. How do ya like it now?". 08th MS Team happens during the One-Year War - it's set on a Zeon-occupied Earth that somehow *isn't* deep in an impact winter after having a *freakin' colony* dropped onto it only a few months previously. It's a bit rushed in terms of story over its 12 episodes, but it's still a strong series. I agree, these three are peak Gundam for the OVA market. 0083 is fantastic. I love the "boots on the ground" perspective and energy it has, like you said, soldiers who have a mission to complete and just want to get home alive.

It's wild that with things like War movies and Star Wars being so popular in the West, mecha anime aren't more popular. Gundam, Macross, VOTOMS, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, and Space Battleship Yamato being some major examples of "Star Wars" in Japanese media

Stardust Memory and 08th MS Team were the absolute GOAT when it comes to grounded gundam. It doesn't get much better than these two.

Thank you Gundam. You singlehandedly turned me to both the Gundam series and the kits, which I love making. But something about the shows never entirely clicked with me because it always felt like it boiled down to some kid screaming and making bad decisions because Tomino's space magic told him he loved someone in an enemy mech. But Stardust Memory, ooh baby, that is some peak 90s anime.

Its seriously sad. We live in the shadow of greats who cant be reached anymore. Such great shows .

If you've never seen Stardust Memory, do yourself a favor and watch it right now. It's Top Gun in space with giant robots. Episode one, the losers of the big war a few years earlier hijack a prototype armed with a massive nuke and everyone freaks out, wondering what their target is. Except nobody realizes the nuke is just STEP ONE in Operation Stardust: it gets worse from there. Worse still, why is the crew of the Albion receiving so little assistance in chasing down the hijacked Gundam and its nuke? Almost as if something more is going on behind the scenes... Watch it.

Any Gundam Series is better than most if not all Hollywood movies/tv shows. Especially in recent years

I work with an old Japanese guy who is into Gundam. I watched the OG so I'd have something to talk about with him and it was OK. This sounds much better. I'm gonna check it out for sure

Gundam 0083 is so remarkable. EVERY time Kou sees Gato outside the Space Colony for one last showdown. I still get shivers!

0083 is wonderful but my top spot is The 8th MS Team. The 8th had to me what was the best “average soldier/real war” feel. I 100% agree that’s what made these two stand out. The real icing on the cake is the fight with Norris Packard and his MS-07B-3 Gouf Custom.

As much as I disagree with which gundam show is the best, I don't think I really gave Stardust the love it probably deserves. I thought it was alright, but nothing special. Of course, at that point I had just finished Unicorn, Hathaway, and Iron-Blooded-Orphans for the first times. The biggest thing I do remember is just how amazing the animation was. It was consistently smooth the whole way through. I have no idea how we don't get stuff like that anymore.

Nothing will compare to the feeling of going to Jr High and watching Stardust Memories at night on Adult Swim thinking to yourself how'd you be able to explain to anyone around you what awesome glory was about to unfold in this OVA.

I just realize how gritty explosions are in older anime as compared to newer ones, that are just flashes of light most of the time.

I remember when I watched 0083: Stardust Memory when it first aired on Adult Swim, I was already a huge fan of Gundam through Gundam Wing, but after the original 79 anime, I was a huge fan of the UC era of Gundam, still am till this day. I remember every Saturday I'd stay up to watched Stardust Memory, being invested. I have seen all of Stardust Memory, War in the Pocket and of course O8th MS Team, but I think out of all three, I personally really liked O8th MS Team, especially the Urban Combat scene with the O8th MS Team against the Ace Pilot, Norris Packard in his Gouf Custom. I remember just watching in away as Norris made an absolute MOCKERY of the Karen, Sanders and of Shiro. It was what also solidify my love for the Gouf Custom as my third favorite Zeon mobile suit. And what I loved about all three of those anime was that there were no New-types like It'sAGundam said. It was fair game. It was skill and experience vs. skill and experience to decide who lived and who died. Such a great video, I wouldn't mind seeing more videos of It'sAGundam talking about his passion for Gundam.

I don't understand how a franchise like this has failed so hard in the West. The stories are well told, and it's serious tones are phenomenal...

0080 War in the Pocket, 0083 Stardust Memory, and 08th MS Team. The three miniseries from the 90s that were the absolute peak of Gundam. After Gundam Wing on Toonami introduced the west to the franchise, these three series really cemented it as a true timeless masterpiece, and created a whole generation of lifelong Gundam fans. Which is why its a tragedy that these days, all three of them are basically only ever available on the high seas. All us old anime fans are used to that kind of thing, but it makes it so much harder to introduce them to new fans.

Gundam is one of those franchises I always wanted to get into but never knew where to start. I am looking forward to more anime recommendations from you, big Papa Gundam!

If only Bandai Namco would make another Late Universal Century Gundam spin-offs or standalone shows like F91, Victory Gundam, or even the semi/non canonical G-Saviour w/c I kind of liked. PLEASE make an animated version for Mobile Suit Crossbone Gundam, Bandai Namco.

One of the things that felt really refreshing in about Stardust Memories is seeing gearheads gush about Mobile Suits rather than just treat them as entirely disposable weapons platforms like the other characters in Universal Century do, discarding iconic mech suits in a second as soon as something better comes along. It took until Victory Gundam for anyone to treat any of the suits with any sort of reverence (even in Zanscare did just want to use the Gundam, to them, the symbol of liberation for propaganda purposes) again.

its why they are going after anime with the localizer mafia, and the netflix live action adaptations.

I feel that Gundam is going to try to commit self wood chipper after Witch from Mercury. It seems to be the start of trying to get new/young into Gundam. And bringing in the wrong people like always. Iron Blooded Orphans should have been the direction.
