Tatiana has described how she learned how to do the growls. Some of it was belting straight into a pillow smashed into her face 😀 You should hear her do reggae style singing, I did a double take the first time.

...Amy Lee doesn't have much of a vocal range. She doesn't hit high notes well and her voice sounds dead and lifeless. Not really a good comparison. But really, Tati is one of a kind. No need to compare her to anyone.

@@primusdude87 Zappa, Einstürzende Neubauten, Mr. Bungle...those bands are progressive. Jinjer does have variable time signatures, intricate polyrhythms, but it is still extremely accessible music...borderline prog.

Tatiana's voice is easy to like? I wouldn't say this type of vocal is easy to like. Besides, this type of vocal all sounds the same, no matter who is "singing" it.

I noticed it and realized they either added them post or had backing track of vocals.

These "live sessions" that bands do are never completely live. It's more like "Live in a pretty studio sessions." I think what they do is do five or six takes on camera, then put together the best bits. Maybe an overdub here and there.

@@mccauleyconor that makes sense and I'm glad they are upfront about it because it's the right thing to do. By the way, I don't think there is anything wrong with double tracking and calling it live provided the live take is your primary take. Double tracking guitars and accent vocals are a great way to a huge sound while still having the live performance up and center.

@@RyanOManchester - The vocal track is straight out of the studio recording, with a bit of editing here and there. I've put the two versions together and they're an exact match. And I have absolutely no problem with that because I understand that they wanted the "relaunched" song to sound as if they only swapped the drums. Of course, being who they are, they took the opportunity to change a few things in the arrangements to make it even better than the original. 🙂

NO, she doesn no do false chords... see vid with about a dozen professional vocal instructors... their reactions vary, and one does say false chords eaarly on... but nope, Tatiana sings from her diaphragm andsomewhere along the line figured out throat singing done by Buddhist monks (she's a Gojita fan, Joe Duplantier taught himslef how to throat sing, see The Flesh Inside Gojita documentary, which was done back when Gojira were a death metal band (a vegan environmentalist Sea Shepherd French oh and they do visual art and have the best drummer in metal too).

@@klimtklavier In throat singing, the false cords provide the overtones (or perhaps UNDERtones?) that GIVE it that whole sound. It's a blend of false and true cords, that's fundamental, and the difficulty for most is using both simultaneously in the right way to get the timbre. That's why it's called throat singing. You CAN'T do it without the false cords in your throat (eg, above the larynx!) It's more like, you need more extreme skill with your false cords to execute it in the first place. The true cords produce the actual note with the false ones changing the resonance in a way that makes it sound like multiple voices. You have a note going off at one frequency, while your throat is essentially resonating at a different one through the opening of the false cords, like an overtone or a reverb with its own pitch. Like, Imagine you had a lot of saturation on a guitar, but it specifically only emphasized one or two specific harmonics... or something like what an octave pedal does. The false cords are serving a similar role in throat singing. And of COURSE she uses her false cords, man. WTF are those gutterals and growls if they aren't coming from her false cords? There is no other way to reliably get those sounds at that kind of volume, let alone the fast transitions to clean singing, without using false cord techniques. If you hear cookie monster sounds, it's likely false cords - presumed true until proven otherwise. And if it really isn't false cord technique, come back in two years and see if they still have it, if it still sounds the same. That aside, false cord techniques are the foundation for just about every scream commonly done today. Verrrryy few forms of vocal distortion don't involve false cords. When learning to scream, you start with the standard false cord growl... and then once you have 'access' the the false cords, you experiment to 'find' the other types of distorted vocals you can do with them. The other guy was talking about fry... maybe I've been doing it wrong, but when I do a vocal fry, I still feel the movement in the false cords - it is just less because airflow is less... the difference is in the breath behind it and how much you open your head/nose. It's just a brighter, more strained sounding false cord technique, made that way by putting more of the resonance of the scream up in your head instead of your chest. That's also why it tends to be quieter. Rasp is just a gentler fry emphasizing the natural voice instead, with extra breath. Like a hybrid head/chest singing technique where you just use your head voice for the distortion while still singing with your chest (doing pitch normally.) Chester Bennington anybody? He would freely go between rasp, fry, and even clean mixed voice by just bringing the false cords in and out. Tighter on the false cords... more restriction in your cranium peters it down and keeps the natural voice dominant. Fry = louder false cord falsetto. Rasp = quieter false cord falsetto with natural voice mix (note that some singers have a 'natural rasp' that uses their actual vocal folds, but it IS potentially damaging for the same reason screaming is.) The reason a fry has clear pitch and a guttural doesn't is because it's head voice, which grants you another way to control pitch in addition to the singing happening underneath, just like it would with clean falsetto singing. People extend their clean pitch range the same as their dirty pitch range. Compression. A fry is a double-compressed growl. I mean... think about it. Ever hear a vocalist slide from a deep gutteral to a really high fry in one continuous scream? How do ya'll think that happens with zero interruptions across the whole transition? False cords are going the whole time, while the vocalist gradually adjusts where the air gets pushed, changing the resonance and thus the overall character of the distortion from low and deep to thin and high. All of these techniques are interrelated. IME, and many others, if you can do a plain cookie-monster growl, you can pretty easily begin to take up all of the techniques I described up there by accident, just playing with what can be done while the false cords are being utilized. It's kinda how most people tend to learn them. It starts with controlling your false cords. They're the distortion pedal of the human voice. Obviously, there is clean chest and head voice in there, too. When she sings clean, it can only be true cords. It's clean singing. When she screams... it is almost certainly false cord. There seems to be some confusion with the names of these techniques. There is specifically a 'false cord scream' which is just that cookie monster gutteral. But 'false cord' originally refers to an anatomical feature that gets utilized in basically every other scream just as much as the ones we CALL 'false cord.' The gutterals are just the first people learn false cord techniques with, the archetypal false cord vocal, among many other related false cord vocals.

You display your lack of understanding of what false cords even are when you say "no she sings from her diaphram" If you aren't incredibly controlled and well supported, that is singing from your diaphragm, you will fuck up and hurt yourself singing false cord screams and growls.
