Today we have a legendary guitar, a beautiful pre-war Martin D-45 from 1941 - and to take things even further, this rare guitar was also purchased, owned, and loved by western swing superstar Bob Wills throughout his life. This amazing piece of history is in our shop between collections, and we feel so lucky to have it for a brief moment that we just had to share it with you all. We start things off with Tyler Geske, Jason Verlinde (Fretboard Journal) and Trevor talking about the guitar before handing it off to Nick Mardon for a demo so you can hear a sliver of how incredible this guitar is.

I have a 2001 D-45 and it has all the projection of the D series guitars. I was brought up on my dad’s Martin D-18 and it also has a wonderful tone. I is not passed through the family as a great guitar must be an inspiration for generations to take up the instrument. I truly miss that ‘45 but love the D-1 from 1931 Authentic made in 2016 and my 1969 D-35 Brazilian. Martin still makes great guitars. I live in Korea but last fall visited the factory in Nazareth. Here I South Korea the professional flat top players prefer the Martins of any age. They are legendary here and I go up to Seoul from time to time to see what new Martin has come into the shop near ItEeWon. They started importing Martin guitars back in the 80s. I always go back to Martins! At 82 I still play at weddings and gatherings throughout Korea. Will continue till I die!

The camera angles and closeups give a detailed look at the very tightly-grained Adirondack top, and stunning Brazilian Rosewood back and sides. I can hear the articulation and resonance even with KZfaq's audio compression. This is truly a special example of the craftsmanship and materials of the era.

Wow! Beautiful D-45 for sure! I would imagine that the main reason this Guitar still looks so great, is because Bob Wills's main instrument was the Fiddle. As a result, Bob likely didn't play this Guitar on stage, all that much. In fact, I never knew that Bob also played Guitar, until I happened onto this video! 🙂 What a treasure to own!! @@jasper_north You are 100% correct. He loves a Martin, so long as it's a good one that has withstood the test. I'm not very crazy about the newer Martin's either ( or Taylor for that matter ) because they're way over-priced for what ya get right out of the box, so to speak. Sure, because of the "Martin" name, they will always hold a higher resale value.......but there are literally dozens of alternatives that cost less, and absolutely smoke the newer Martin's. In the past 8 months, I went crazy buying four different acoustic's from Hsienmo Guitars......and all are from their custom shop. I'll put em up against "almost" anything else costing 5 times as much. ( As great as they are, they fall short when comparing to a top shelf Boucher, for example. But hell, Boucher is perhaps the finest acoustic guitar being produced currently. ) I bought my first Hsienmo, and was SO blown away, I bought 3 more. I have yet to find a single negative review about Hsienmo acoustic guitars. Hsienmo not only builds no more than 400 acoustic's a year ( that's not very many......owner/founder Li Chen told me so personally, via an email ) ..........but they don't even offer "a cheap guitar" at all. Their base models start at $900, and go up from there, depending on options such as high-end tone woods & fancy binding/purfling/inlays, etc. Even their $900 base models sound superb. Personally, I believe they are one of the very best values in the industry right now. One thing is for sure: we are definitely living in the golden age of acoustic guitars, with so many fantastic builders right now. Cheers.

With all due respect, at 1:56 you state that Gene Autry was watching guys on TV like Jimmy Rodgers prior to him commissioning a D-45 from Martin in 1933, I'm fairly certain TV didn't come into wide-spread use until after WWII. If you set aside the absolute rarity and you're really honest with yourself, the sound is not that impressive on a value basis. I'm not at all saying a pre-war Martin D-45 isn't an impressive specimen, because it's obvious. It's 1-in-91, and in that condition, essentially 1-in-never. The issue is that it sounds like nearly any Martin dreadnought and I'll probably get downvoted to hell, but stack that up blind, no visuals at all with a new D-28 and you couldn't tell the difference via KZfaq. And, if the fact that it doesn't translate online like it does in person is the main thing, then great, got it, but I can tell you right now that the tone from Kurt's 1959 D-18E absolutely smashes this. As does the sound of certain Taylor's in the hands of great musicians. Pedigree aside, this guitar sounds common as fuck and I feel this video was 100% Koolaid, even if it was very well done. I thought I'd hear magic, but like most Martin's I've encountered, the story is often better than the reality.

Martin makes amazing guitars, but this is simply untrue. Having handled probably close to a 1000 I assure you there are differences. Perhaps not to the the average player, but when you’re talking about pre-war Martins there’s a significant difference.

I've been playing the guitar for over 50 years, and in my experience the age of a Martin (prewar or not) isn't a guaranteed guide as to how it will sound. I've owned several Martins, including two 1930s examples (at a time when they were just regarded as affordable secondhand guitars) and played many. Wood varies - density and stiffness for example. The D-45 here doesn't sound exceptional to me, perhaps because it's a recording on KZfaq, maybe not. I await the flak I'm going to get.....:-)

Guitars like this are a National Treasure 🇺🇸That’s no Doubt the Cleanest Pre-War D-45 on the planet. It sounds okay as far as Martins go, but didn’t have the magic I expected. Face it. It’s a Rare Heirloom Expensive collectors Guitar. In person it may sound different. I have played many pre-war D-28s and D-18’s. Played a few OO-45’s. They all sounded great. Honestly though the last 20 years has produced so many skilled Custom Luthiers crafting incredible Guitars. There are many Guitars crafted now that equal this old Bob Wills’ D-45 as far as Tone and playability. But Gotta Love the Old Gibsons and Martins-especially from the 30’s

1. Western Swing has nothing to do with "hillbilly" music from the south. It's a combination of western music and swing jazz. 2. If you listen to Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli, you'll hear much of where Bob's sound came from. 3. Bob is not from Tulsa. He's a proud Texan from Turkey, Texas. Now go wash your mouth out with soap. 4. In the 30s and 40s, Bob toured with a 31 piece band, including female vocalists, playing all the popular tunes of the day from the American Songbook. 5. Bob continued to be wildly popular in the West well into the late 50s.
@TylerECG
@TylerECG Жыл бұрын
1. “Hillbilly music” is a blanket term used to describe a wide variety of genres including country, western, gospel, cowboy, etc. Much of this developed in the west, as well as the south. 2. Correct. Bob had many influences. 3. Bob was born in Kosse, TX and didn’t make it to Turkey until his early teenage years after several moves with his family. Rather than list every place his family ever lived, I decided to focus on Tulsa- the home of the Playboys and where Bob called home during his most prominent years. 4. Nobody is arguing this. 5. I suppose “wildly popular” is a relative term. While they still drew crowds in the early 50s, their popularity by 1956 was quickly dwindling by all accounts. Bob was under huge financial strain and was no longer the superstar he was during the Tommy Duncan era. Maybe just try to enjoy the story of this once in a lifetime instrument. We clearly both love Bob, I don’t think there’s much sense in quibbling over minutiae.
@williamhedrick5950
@williamhedrick5950 Жыл бұрын
@@TylerECG "Hillbilly" music refers specifically to music made in the Appalachian mountains, best exemplified by the Carter Family and the Stanley Brothers. Bob would certainly have plugged your piehole for referring to his music as "hillbilly". Western music is almost exclusively written on Tin Pan Alley for the westerns that became popular when soundies came along. They're all part of the fantasy creation myth of the American cowboy in Hollywood films. The Sons of the Pioneers, the Carter Family of Western music, were essentially the background singers for Roy Rogers' music breaks. "Country & Western" is all about marketing; they couldn't be any more different.

That's "Jimmie" by the way, not Jimmy. See how easy it is to slip up a bit? Now imagine having to make a 20 minute video full of information, not just string together a couple sentences in a comment. My intent at 1:56 was to reference early newsreels featuring notable artists of the time, as well as a number of short films such as "The Singing Brakeman;" a very popular 1929 film starring Jimmie Rodgers. Calling it TV was a slip of the tongue. Glad you enjoyed the video.

@TylerECG
@TylerECG Жыл бұрын
Well as we know, the US didn't declare war until the middle of December '41. Because of this, virtually all of 1941 was prewar for us, our economy, and the supply chains that supported our domestic manufacturing. Wartime regulations on timber and metal notably altered the way American guitars (Martin included) were made during that time. It's because of these changes that, when dealing with US made instruments, '41 is considered prewar and '42 is considered wartime. I'm sure Japan, Italy, and Germany have similar discrepancies in their terminology. Thanks for watching!
