At 0:45, you can hear air, and the train starts slowing down. I think this is when I032 realized they were lined on the wrong track and tried to stop their train, but were unable to in time.

FYI, that I032 was SUPPOSED to keep going north to Savannah. Instead, someone misaligned the switch at the “Folkston Turnout” and sent him up the #2 Waycross main….and right into the rock train. The signal system and PTC had been turned off due to multiple problems/repairs throughout the day.

You can first hear him throw the train into emergency when they round the curve and see the other train. Look closely in the upper left after the second bang, and you’ll see the two double stack cars jacknifing. First bang was the actual collision. The second one was those cars coming off.

I understood now from anb’s comment, but that was louder than the pothole incident that was created by a Mack truck on daily dose of internet 😂 1:04 louder than a metal door

talk about having a csx truck and workers. at the right place at the right time!

It's one thing to be close to the tracks , luckily the tracks themselves are typically in better order at railfan platforms and crossings

This WAS NOT caused by PTC, as the PTC and CTC were cut out. There is no way these trains should have been going that fast through that junction without PTC/CTC. Luckily, it sounds like the new rules that the FRA writes for cut out PTC/CTC won't be written in blood this time. By my car counting and calculations, there was approximately 2,945ft of train that passes prior to dumping the air. Based on the locations, the crew dumped the air within seconds of going over the switch the wrong way, but they only had maybe 1,500 feet to stop, probably more like 1,200 by the time they recognized they were on the wrong track and dumped the air. Both trains were running left hand, likely the rock train was in the hole as it had gotten passed by other southbound traffic, and the intermodal was going to pass something else northbound.
